  2. frustrating problem(s)

Date: 01/08/06     Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, yahoo, microsoft, google

On my older computer (a Dell that runs Windows 98), I keep getting invalid page fault errors. Several occur after Windows has loaded:
    YOP (that's Yahoo Online Protection)
    rundll32
    and something called autodown

It also occurs when I startup Internet Explorer, I get that program error message asking me if I want to send data to Microsoft and then the program crashes. I can't access the Internet even though I'm connected.

All the errors say that the program caused an invalid page fault error at module "unknown"

I've tried running anti-virus (AVG) and Ad-aware... I have that computer networked with this one (running Windows XP) and sharing a DSL connection. After some issues in the beginning, I finally got the network up and running so I've been using this computer to download the antivirus programs so I can run them on the other one since I can't get IE to work there at all.
Another thing that may or may not be related: if I uncheck automatically detect settings under LAN settings in internet options, then IE doesn't crash, but the pages won't load.

I'm also having a small, unrelated issue on this computer (the windows XP one). I can't get the internet options setting for "never dial a connection" to stick. I have DSL, so I'm always connected, but certain sites make the dial a connection box pop up. And when I head back to internet options, the "dial whenever a network connection is not present" option is checked off.

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! I've tried Dell's support website as well as Microsoft's and Googled 'til I couldn't see straight, but I haven't come up with any solutions for my problem.

EDIT: got the first problem solved - uninstalled Yahoo Online Protection and that did the trick!! Still can't figure out what's causing the never dial a connection setting to change. It's frustrating, but I figure it should go away once I delete my AOL account.

My mom's computer is running windows XP. At the moment it loads up to the log on screen. When log on details are entered it gives the message:
"This copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate now?"
If you click no it takes you back to the log on screen. If you press yes, it says "this copy of windows is already activated. Press ok to continue." and then takes you back to the log on screen.

Hello, I’m new to both this community and somewhat to computers, so if a n00b like me isn’t allowed (cause I have no advise) than I’ll leave quietly, unless you don’t mind me watching while trying to learn. Man I wish I weren’t so computer illiterate so when my computer did a hick-up then I’d know what to do except spoon sugar into the floppy drive! Anyway onto the question…

My Windows 98 computer runs great… usually. I run McAfee Viruscan, defrag, disk clean up, and scan-disc on regular occasions and they always say everything is fine. We just recently got Verizon DSL and ever since replacing IE with Firefox the internet runs flawlessly… usually. Since all we run is Word and Internet there is a TON of unused space, which helps keep things running smoothly… usually. Often when we open a new window it freezes and takes about 30sec to get moving, but don’t have any troubles after that. But lately when we open Word it’ll crash (freeze, show this blue screen, and/or need resetting). It has troubles opening up even the smallest of documents, and I don’t know why. It got pretty bad after installing DSL, could that be related? Our viruscan won’t be upgraded with spyware defense for a few weeks, but I’m not getting any pop-ups so could it still be infected?

  12. Help please?

Computerish issues I have had today (please help, if you have any clue how to fix them!):

    1. I am trying to transfer a good chunk of my mp3s from my old computer to my laptop.
Issue? I lack one of those cool insert-it-into-a-USB-port memory stick thingys. However, with about 200mb to transfer and a 56k connection, I could really use one (or another way to transfer such data quickly) right about now. Suggestions on how to do this quickly and easily? (I do have an ipod that I could potentially use, but I'm not sure how because I also want the songs on my laptop, which ipod wouldn't allow. Also, my CD burner is broken, which nixes that option.)

    2. I'm looking for an old essay I wrote on my old desktop. I, being the genius that I was, fastidiously hid all incriminating writing and files in a series of cleverly disguised folders. I also either renamed the file/can't remember what it was called in the damn first place, but can remember bits of text. Is there any way to efficiently search for this (by text or otherwise) in the windows find (or elsewhere?) so I can salvage my 10th grade brilliance? I tried today and came up with zilch in Windows 98.

    Help? Pretty please?

  14. oh god where do I start?

Date: 01/05/06     Keywords: software, security, virus, microsoft

(xposted to computersupport in hopes of getting all these problems solved!)

I just got my computer back online, and I've run into a few troubles in the last 6 months of no internet.

first off. I got a digital camera, installed the software, then installed photoshop. When I hook up my camera, the computer recognizes it and opens my photoshop, uploading my pictures. So is the Kodak Easyshare software even necessary? if I took it off, will my computer still recognize my camera? The software is little more than a nuesence right now.

also, the kodak software somehow messed with my thumbnail-to-full-size option when clicking on a picture in my files. it used to be the picture would take up the majority of the screen, and I could still do the whole next/previous options. This is what my computer was like when I bought it... but now when I click on a thumbnail of a picture, the whole thing takes up my screen except for 2 blue buttons saying "add to collection" or "done." How do I change this back to the original state?

Now for virus protection... I had Norton Internet Security 2004, and it expired. my computer prompted me to buy online a new subscription, but instead I went out and bought the same disc of 2005, thinking I could just enter the new product key. I even tried uninstalling the whole thing, then re-installing it with the new product key. no such luck. my computer still recognizes this as an expired 2004 virus protection and gives me popups every 20 seconds telling me to buy a new subscription online. Their tech support charges per minute so I was hoping to find help on here.

It still sends me warnings when my computer tries to access the internet though. So while using Music Match Jukebox's option to find track tags online, my computer asked if it was okay to allow "MIM" to access the internet... I didn't know Music Match Jukebox would be called MIM so I said Block, and now I can't figure out how to allow it to connect! (I'm a total software illiterate) any ideas?

I'm still having a problem of my computer telling me that it can't find "mkbdata.dat" at startup. I think it's a mouse software, but I can't figure out how to delete it, or what the old mouse would be called on my computer. I had this problem months ago but never solved it.

I need a software that allows me to edit audio and video tracks. like for songs on CD's that have 20 minutes of silence before playing a hidden track. it's taking up WAY too much room on my computer. anything free available?

now my last two problems (for now.) I deleted some annoying mail thing that was on my computer when I got it, because I never used the program. but now when I click on an "email me" link on people's pages, it tells me "could not complete because you do not have a default mail client set up." PLEASE help me re-download whatever I deleted or help me find a new program that even I could understand. And lastly, I REALLY miss Microsoft Works... like Wordpad but with more options of what you can do with the page. Anyone know where I can download this for free?

  15. Font help

    Date: 01/04/06     Keywords: no keywords

I know I've asked the people of this community for help with identifying a font before and everyone was more than helpful. I know some people posted with a link to a community specifically designed for this sort of thing, but for the life of me I can't remember it. So I need someone to give me that community name and also if possible tell me what font this is. Thanks in advanced, I know this isn't the sort of question I'm technically supposed to be asking in here.

  17. Thanx for the help with the previous one.

    Date: 01/03/06     Keywords: java

And there is some other problems for you to help me with:

    1) When I press the right button on hardisk or floppy/disk-drive in my computer screen explorer crushes.

    2) When I view mdf/mds file in any program (explorer, winrar, emule... I think they explorer based) explorer (or the other program) crushes. Dos navigator (runed from windows) view them fine.

    3) My opera 8.51 build 7712 crushes on some sites with M2 error (store unit failed engine unit() failed). Opera reinstalling doesnt help. I'll try to delete all flash and java stuff and then reinstall everything.

    4) When I watch video with Light Alloy media player v.3.3, the taskbar start to pop up in fullscreen mode. Reinstall of Light Alloy or Windows doesn't help. Other players (crystal, VLC, windows media...) work fine.

    5) And 4 question (nothing to do with computers): does it bug anyone, that I xpost my questions in 4 communities or there is one comunity that everybody watch?

Now, I use Windows Pro XP SP2. When I install it (as windows Pro XP SP1) it works fine without first two mistakes. After update with Windows Update, the issues appears. I tried allready 2 version of windows, atlist the cd-keys were different, but it doesnt help.

  18. Hi everybody ^_^

    Date: 01/02/06     Keywords: virus

I'm new in this community, but I think I can help with some problems.
But meanwhile I'm experiensing a problem that I can't solve myself:
My display goes black after the random period of time. It can be 5 minutes since last rebut, or 5 hours. It can happen, when PC is idle or while brousing or unraring something. It never happens whie playing, though... Computer is not rebuting, display just goes black and sound stops.
I don't think its virus or power problem (I formated everything, reinstalled system, blah, blah, blah... Nothing helped.)
I think it's about BIOS upgrade, 'cause it started to happen after I changeg CPU from Celeron 1.7 to Celeron 2.8 (yeah, I know, it's crap, but I'm poor lone soldier!!!). I don't have clue, how to upgrade bios, that is why I need your help.
Now I have Award bios v 6.00 PG.
The third line in booting screen is BIOS-I-2M (2K020523).
I have no clue who is manufacter of my motherboard (it's not writen on the box neither in manual), but it's called P4V845 series motherboard (yeah, another piece of crap). "PC133 or DDR266 SDRAM/ 400MHz or 533 MHz System Bus" also is written on the box.
I'd really appreciate your help, people.
    Thanks.

    Date: 01/02/06     Keywords: web

I heard something today and I'm dying to know whether or not it is true.... can someone hack into your computer and read your OLD IM / AIM conversations? Does AOL or AIM archieve these conversations on your computer somewhere? I hope someone has the answer to this... as I have been searching the web all night for info with no luck....

    Thanks!!

  20. DVD read problem

    Date: 12/31/05     Keywords: software

Hi all. I'm on a Dell Dimension 4600 desktop with a DVD-ROM in the tower, and I've had it for about 13 months now.

The DVD-ROM no longer appears able to read DVD discs at all. It reads CD-ROMs just fine, oddly. But when I insert a DVD for use in Dell Media Experience, I hear spinning and something like a buzz, followed by silence. The system repeats this several times, almost as if it's trying repeatedly to read the disc, but ultimately I get no response and a notice of unable to detect a DVD. To test I bought a brand new DVD movie and put it in the drive straight out of the package. The same problem occurred, but the disc was completely clean on removal and didn't have any scratches placed on it. So I'm thinking the laser is the problem.

I have cleaned the drive using a commercial cleaning disc and an air blower, and still Media Experience can't detect the disc. All other discs which are not DVD, such as music CDs, CD-Rs and software CD-ROMs, still read and run applications and videos perfectly.

Has the laser been worn and I need to clean it manually or is it fried and I have to replace it? If the former, is there a way that I might clean it myself without taking the drive in for service?
