Weird thing with Internat
Date: 05/19/05
Keywords: browser
No, that isn't a typo, that's what the comp calls this on the task menu.
I'm not sure why I'm bothering to ask about a rather stupid issue that isn't even causing a problem. But it just pops up SO often, even more than that bloody Links folder that likes to appear in my Favs every day. it's like a Jack in the Box1
Every since I got Japanese language support for my browser (it's for IE but it's working fine on Firefox) I'll always have the keyboard settings on my taskbar, the thing that reads as Internat on the taskbar menu. It's a little box that says En. I right clicked on it to see what this was, and what I discovered is that it makes no sense for it to keep popping up on there. When I looked through the list of languages to set it to, Japanese wasn't even listed. And the tick box to make this not keep popping up on the taskbar was greyed out.
I tried looking for this in MSConfig, but I didn't even see anything new on the list of start-up items, and there was certainly nothing named Internat on there.

Opening links in a new window problem.
Date: 05/18/05
Keywords: web, spyware
I have a Dell, Windows XP home edition, and recently I've been having problems opening new window links on the internet. The website freezes up and stays frozen until I exit off the internet. A lot of times a window that pulls up saying an internet error occured. To make matters even more confusing, once in a blue moon new window links will open fine without any problems.
At first I thought it had something to do with the computer being chock-full of spyware but after running several spybot programs I'm still having the same problem.
Any idea what's going on or how I can fix it?
Thanks.

Help!

Keywords: no keywords
Hi everyone,
I'm sure this has been asked a miiiiillion times. (And i'm not sure if anyone will be offended by this), But, I need help burning a DVD! I want to burn everyday movies. Now, I have DVD encryptor, which i was told to use. The problem is... after ripping the files to my computer, my DVD-R disks are too small for all the files! I have 4.7gig disks, but most movies seem to be 7+ gigs. I'm sure they are double layer... but I have a double layer burner, but i bet that doesn't mean much with the space on the disks.
So, does anyone know what I can do? Is there a way to burn the movie on to 2 dvd-r's? Or the perfect answer would to have it all on one disk.
It would be awesome, thank you!
(Now i'm not totally illiterate... but I don't know everything, so be easy one me!) =)
Edit: If cutting out credits and stuff I don't need will help, i wouldnt mind :) Thing is i just don't know how much it would help.
EDIT Problem fixed! Dvdshrink works. It's awesome. I just burned a DVD =) thanks micronix!

keyboard

I just moved out of my apartment and obviously took my computer with me. When I set it up at my new place, the keyboard would not work and the mouse would freeze moments later after windows had loaded. After changing keyboards, the same thing happened. Do you think it may be the plugs in the back of the computer? Cleaing the CMOS also had not helped. Thank you.

Two Windows XP's... acck
Date: 05/17/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hey guys.. I've been reading in this community for awhile. First time post.. any help is greatly appreciated.
My boyfriend thinks he's some sort of computer guru, but really he knows just enough to get himself into trouble. After reading reviews about Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, he decided that it'd be awesome to have on our desktop. Here are the specs:
Dell Dimension 3000
Intel P4 2.80 Ghz
512 MB DDR RAM
80 GB IDE HD
NVidia GeForce 5500 (I think)
Windows XP Home Edition SP2 (that is, until it got all screwed up)
So... he had one of the OEM discs for Media Center Edition, and then tried to install it onto our computer as an upgrade. He told me there was some error after awhile saying "Cannot display this video mode," apparently because our little 15" monitor sucks. Then he decided it'd be best to just switch back to XP.
So after hard booting out of the Media Center setup a few times, he booted from a Home Edition CD, then reinstalled XP Home Edition. Unfortunately he left the original Home Edition completely installed, and did nothing in the way of reformatting or partitioning the hard drive.
Now when the system boots up, it goes to the new installation of XP, which has none of our normal settings, programs, files, or even drivers. I've tried going into the boot sequence to change it back to the old one.. system restore does not have any restore points saved.. and our poor computer seems to be stuck with two versions of XP. Which is insane.
At this point I'm considering just buying a new hard drive (I've been wanting a bigger one anyway) and starting fresh from scratch.. then possibly formatting this one and using it with an external USB enclosure for extra storage. Is that the only solution?
Thank you so much for reading this, and thanks in advance for your advice.

Hotmail & Outlook
Date: 05/16/05
Keywords: no keywords
Had I known they were going to take away POP3 capability from free users, I would have done this BEFORE May 10th. I eventually found out that the reason why my Hotmail account was no longer able to import correctly into my Outlook application was because of hotmail. I found out by searching, there was no courtesy email.
Grrrr.
Anyhow, I have hotmail emails that I would like to save to disk. The appear in SubFolders in my Outlook application, but when I try to copy them within outlook, I get an error because they are not conncected to the server.
So is there a way that I can move these hotmail emails into an Outlook folder WITHOUT being connected to the hotmail server? Or can i save them to disk somehow?
I'm hoping there is an easier way than copying and pasting into a word document one by one.
Thanks so much!

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, which has been giving me problems for months. Finally, my hard drive died, so Dell sent me a new one. Now the computer shuts itself off when I run more than two programs or use iTunes. I presume this is because it's overheating, but why is it overheating so easily? What can I do?
Thanks to anyone who may be able to offer some advice. :)

help?
Date: 05/13/05
Keywords: browser, asp
Hmm... so I'm having hard drive issues and I'm not too sure where to turn so I'm hoping someone, somewhere may have a solution, or at least some advice.
I have a pretty small HD, it has 10gb. This is never usually too big of an issue but to my great horror I discovered I only have 750mb of space left on it. I decided to go the logical way and "Add/Remove" some programs that were taking up too much space. I scrolled through everything and found that *gasp* to my horror, Canon Zoombrowser is taking up a whopping 4,500mb!
I thought, "this can't be possible", because well, I don't have any photo files kept there anymore and all the photos I store are in a folder that only has like... 250mb or something. Really, not that many things.
So, I went into C drive and opened up the Zoombrowser folder and there certainly is NOT 4,500mb worth of crap in there. Just your basic program and bits... 100mb tops, if that.
So I've been going crazy, looking in every single program on the computer to find out where the hell all the HD memory has disappeared to! I've checked every folder and nowhere is there THAT much memory used up. Not even all totalled up, could it possibly equate to it.
I was thinking, that perhaps it is in relation to the Windows XP switching users function? I only have one account to log in onto the computer with, and that is an 'administrator' account, but is it possible that there are old files that are hidden, that I can't view, that are from BEFORE I installed XP and began using this logon feature?
I also remember using Windows Media Player and the Playlists section showed up with hundreds of songs that USED to be on the computer but I thought were deleted as I couldn't find their sources? Perhaps this has something to do with it?
There are many theories, however they could all be shite and just a result of my inability to keep from adding too much stuff.
If anyone has ANY idea what I have been rambling on about and has any clue as to where my HD memory has up and gone to, please, please reply or I'll be forced to take severe action and delete The Sims or something! =)
Nah, seriously, I appreciate any advice!
Thank you, domo arigato, merci, danke & tusen takk!

Stupid Disk Drive...
Date: 05/12/05
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, I have had my computer for a good... seven or eight years now, and it's running on low space (I admit, lol) and still is on Win98, but it works fine. BUT! Lately, the stupid A-drive (floppy) hasn't been working properly. I stick in a disk, no matter the disk, and it goes "This disk has not been formatted. Would you like to format it?" When I know damn well it's formatted and has files on it already. It's done that with dozens of disks, so I know it's the computer and not the disks. I REALLY depend on my floppy drive to transport files, so I'd really appreciate some help with this if possible. Thanks in advanced!

Using a second local drive
Date: 05/12/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hey, I have three drives. Two are just disk drives and the third is the local drive, C. The C drive is getting pretty filled up. Since according to the Performance page I still have plenty of room on the comp (though the amount it says vary highly from day to day), I was wondering if it was possible to create another local drive and put some of my files on there. I'm not sure it would make the resources less strained on this thing, but I figured it couldn't hurt.
Oh, and my dinosaur is running on Win98.

I have one other problem. I'm not a parent, but I have an older brother who keeps downloading "garbage" from the internet. I know that for the tv there is a code which parents can use to block certain tv shows (violent ones, etc.) from being viewed by the kids. Is there a way I can do this with my computer? Do I have to download a program?

System restore & Backup (Windows xp)
Date: 05/10/05
Keywords: software, virus, spyware
Question #1:
Hi I have windowsxp and spyware (there is also probably a virus--I found a trojan.). I want to reformat my harddrive. How do I do that? Is "reformatting" the same as "system restore"? This system restore is when the computer restores the system to a previous period. If I restore it to the time before the spyware came up, will the problem be fixed?
I can't find reformat in the "help" on my computer, and we don't have the windowsxp software cd. So, I'm considering that "system restore" is better because it won't delete programs I want to keep, like Windows Movie Maker and some sound programs.
Question #2:
Can I backup programs (and not need the windowsxp software cd)? For example, Windows Movie maker. Would I need to have the "installer" of this program? (I don't have it, I suppose.)

Help Me! Please!
Date: 05/06/05
Keywords: web, spyware, google
OK, now a few months back, this site started popping up for no reason, no matter what. It pissed me off so I ran adware and spyware checks and cleaned everything out. But it still din't stop. It kept popping. So then just recently I decided to search for the name of the website on google. Turns out it's a big "hijacking" thing and there's a way to remove it. It's called sgrunt. The point is, the help that was offered and the solutions were very confusing and it was pretty much for the computer literate, which I'm not. So if anyone knows about this and can help me in a simple way, please please. This is becoming very annoying and distrubing and...I just hate it.
Again, it's called sgrunt. So if anyone can help me. Please do!

HP Notebook Audio and Video Problems
Date: 05/06/05
Keywords: no keywords
I own a HP Pavilion ze1210 notebook. I bought it in 2002. It has XP Office on it. My harddrive crashed (blue screen of death) in Aug, and my dad installed a new one. Here's the issue, every time I try to watch a DVD it likes to skip - to describe it you listen and watch and every 30 seconds the audio and video pauses then continues. And if I want to listen to a cd, it sounds like actual scratches while listening to it. A high-pitched rip. It does nothing to the disc, because when I listen to it/watch it it's perfect. But these problems happened in Oct, way after I installed the new harddrive. The only other thing I can think of - I updated Media Player to the newest one (I actually wanted to get the one I had before on my oldhard drive where I can actually have the play buttons on my blue start bar thingy). So there's that. Any help would be greatly appraited.

problems after getting new ISP
Date: 05/05/05
Keywords: software, web, google
I'm so glad I found this community =)
Last Friday, I finally received the modem from my new ISP (Bell Sympatico DSL, if there are any Canadians out there familiar with it). I installed the modem on my laptop first, since we didn't have a long enough phone cord to reach to my boyfriend's desktop. Everything worked really well, the service was fast and there were no problems.
Then I installed the modem on my boyfriend's desktop, and hooked up a wireless router. Since then certain websites like Google, Gmail, Hotmail won't load for us at all. He's not having any problems sending or receiving email through Outlook Express, but I can only receive. I've checked all of my email settings, and they're all fine. Some sites are loading very quickly (livejournal is doing well, but a forum and my local newspaper are annoyingly slow)
Any idea what might be up? Mostly why certain wesbites won't load, others are really slow, and some are fine. I never had problems at all before I got Sympatico. I checked out their website to see if there was any information, but most of the stuff is decently useless. As is the "Net Assistant" that came with the software. I'd love to avoid calling customer support, becuase I'm moderately tech-savvy and I really hate being treated like a complete idiot over the phone.
Thanks in advance =)
