CPU usage

I've recently noticed that my computer has a 100% CPU usage even though I don't have a lot of programs open (only AIM). I think I have enough RAM (512 mb) and I don't know what else it could be. My guess is that AIM takes up a lot of system resources, but a couple of times before, I didn't have AIM running and the computer was still at 100%. Anybody have any ideas? Maybe I should add more RAM like up to 1GB? Thanks.

By the way, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and my computer is a Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz.
