1. Childhood computer game...

    Date: 08/21/07     Keywords: no keywords

Does anyone remember a computer math game (I think I had it for my old Mac) from the early 90's where you play as this kid detective? He walks the halls of his school, which has been taken over by evil robots run by an evil mad scientist. You have to photograph the robots when they come at you and then solve math problems. (Actually there was a reading version of the game as well. In that one you had reading comprehension questions.) Then it was like a scavenger hunt to find the robots wearing the right things...hats, shoes etc...

Yeah, it sounds weird. It was. The name is just driving me crazy. I can't remember it at all. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks!

  4. Internal PC Hard Drive - SCSI or ATA?

    Date: 08/16/07     Keywords: shopping

What's the difference between the two formats, and how do I tell which ones I already have in my system? I'm running XP, with the original 40g (ha!) drive, and an additional 150g drive I installed last year (at work right now, shopping online). I want to get at least a 500g drive for movies, but don't know which type I need to get.

    Thanks for the help!

  5. Video card failure or something else?

    Date: 08/15/07     Keywords: asp

Hello, just 3-4 weeks ago I bought and built a new computer. For a good amount of time, everything was running perfectly. Just now, however, my computer froze, and upon restarting, the video is all messed up. I'm seeing blue/red lines and dots everywhere, from the starting BIOS screen to Windows. I can't run Windows anymore and all I can really get to is the BIOS.

    Here's the parts I'm using:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130062&Tpk=N615 - Graphics card

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130081 - Motherboard

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034 - Memory

550W Antec, Hitachi Deskstar 7k1000, Q6600 Intel Quad core.

I did no overclocking, my CPU was idle at 30C, everything in the BIOS was fail-safe default. I installed the latest Nvidia graphic drivers and directx a few weeks ago. Everything was running well until just now. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks in advance.

  7. Vista/XP

Hey, I'm thinking of getting a new Laptop, my current one is slowly dying, but all the ones on offer have Vista. I absolutely don't want to be stuck with Vista, so i'll have to install XP, but has anyone here done this before? is it difficult to get drivers?

  8. drobo?

    Date: 08/14/07     Keywords: asp

One of my 320gig hdd's is failing in my home/media server. I'm too lazy and cheap to build a proper raid5 setup so I've been looking around for a better storage solution (other than just doing occasional synctoy mirroring of important folders onto an external usb2.0 drive).

I've seen drobo mentioned on engadget and slashdot a while back and figured I'd look into it. The newegg reviews are pretty hit or miss, and since most people that write on newegg usually leave comments like "M@De MY FR@G COUNTZ PWNZ N00BZ0RZ!! QuAD SLi IN MY PANTS" I figured maybe I shouldn't buy into everything I read there.

So... anyone read about it? used it? knew someone that used it? had a dog urinate on it?

  10. Evil Windows

Date: 08/10/07     Keywords: browser, virus, web, linux, yahoo

I am a Linux man. I am familiar with most Linux's. I enjoy Linux and understand the filesystem layout etc.
Unfortunetly geing the Junior tech I sometimes have to be the computer whooping boy. So, when a Windows luser decides to install the latest virus on his laptop, I have to figure it out.
Unfortunetly I've been out of the Windows world for so long, I am challenged by this latest problem.
The CD rom is busted (firmware I think). It's a laptop, so no disk access. And now recently the web browser won't work. When I say won't work, I mean that the system pings www.yahoo.com, but the web browser (ie and FF) say that Unable to Connect.
Windows Firewall is on, off, it doesn't matter.
    This is XP with sp2.
Oh btw, NOD32 said it does/did have a virus but I can't pull it up again.

So my question is, what is causing the browser to not be able to pull up pages.

    Any help is appreciated. thx

  13. PCI Card for Watching Cable TV on Computer

    Date: 08/09/07     Keywords: no keywords

Setting up the network this weekend:

I've got Windows XP on my desktop, and will be using my iBook G4 on the wireless network (don't think that matters, but hey - TMI is better than not enough!). I've just ordered cable to be installed (no box required), but really want to get rid of my TV and use my 22" desktop monitor as a TV instead.

What is the best/easiest/cheapest way of setting up my computer to do double duty as my TV? I think it's a PCI card (plus remote, 'cause I'm lazy), something like this:

    http://shop3.outpost.com/product/4384735?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Of course, I wanted to check with my resident experts to see if they have better suggestions. I'm not a true geek, so my experience tends to be more simple stuff (like setting up the wireless router).

    Thanks!

  15. Building a new system -- no video :(

    Date: 08/09/07     Keywords: no keywords

        Hey all,
After gaining experience from upgrading my pre-built computer part by part, I decided to build my own custom machine this summer. Last week, I purchased all the parts while making sure they were compatible with each other, and I just finished putting the entire machine together today. I fired up the machine in anticipation, and while there were no angry motherboard beeps besides the single startup beep, nothing was showing up on the screen. I thought maybe I had plugged the monitor into the wrong socket since the graphics card has two, but I still didn't get anything on the screen through the other socket. My monitor, which is a CRT from 2003, acts like there is no signal coming at all and flashes its "Check cables. Monitor is working" message. The motherboard shows four green lights on the back, which according to the manual means all is well.

Here is what hardware I have in my computer right now:
Motherboard: MSI P6NSLT Platinum (this motherboard does not have an onboard graphical chip)
Graphics Card: MSI 8600GTS (nVidia chipset) for a PCIe x16 slot
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550
    RAM: Four sticks of G.SKILL 1GB (DDR2 800)
    Power Supply: APOWER pure black 680W SATA ATX power supply (DC Outputs: +3.3V @ 45A, +5V @ 50A, +12V @ 22A, -12V @ 0.8A, -5V @ 0.5A, +5Vsb @ 2A)
Other things: CD/DVD writer, 250GB hard drive (SATA), PCI internal wireless card, a side fan

        I tried...
    1. reseeding graphics card and booting: No video
    2. reseeding RAM and booting: No video
    3. disconnecting DVD burner and and wireless card and booting: No video
    4. disconnting hard drive as well and booting: No video
    5. Removing all but one stick of RAM and booting: No video
    6. Removing all RAM and booting : long beep from the motherboard and the four LEDs on the D-Bracket flashed red on all of the LEDs but on #2 (at least through this, I knew the motherboard could detect some problems). No video
    7. Using a different power supply (A RAIDMAX 450W power supply) and booting: No video
    8. Using a different VGA --> DVI connector: No video.
    * my monitor is VGA, but both of the sockets on the graphics card are DVI. The card came with the DVI --> VGA adaptors.
    9. Looking at the case remorsefully for 15 minutes and booting it: No video. :( If only things worked this way.

My case innards looks like this right now: http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/350/dsc08319ah5.jpg
The two sets of yellow, black, and tan wires are connected to two power plugs and go into the reddish graphics card.
The red bar in the middle is the RAM. The black and silver thing that says "AVC" is my heatsink,
and under it is a layer of thermal grease and my processor.
The hard drive (bottom left) and DVD drive (bottom right) are disconnected.

Anyway, half a decade ago I had purchased a computer, and I had a similar problem and the way I solved it was by buying new CRT monitor. I know the choice nowadays would be to buy an LCD, but the kind of stuff I do requires a degree of color accuracy and clarity... CRT > LCD argument aside, this time around I don't have enough money to get an LCD.

To sum it up.. , are newer graphics cards (ones that have come out in the ast year) incompatible with older (+3 ears old) CRTs?

  16. photoshop closes when trying to open folder

    Date: 08/08/07     Keywords: no keywords

I use Photoshop 7. Whenever I download a new set of textures (which are individual .jpg files in a folder), and then try to open the folder in PS, PS just closes. The window/program closes. I double-click (or click 'open') and Photoshop closes. I open the program again, try to open the folder, but it does the same thing. It's like trying to open a folder and hitting the 'x' to close out the program are suddenly the same thing.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

  17. Vista compatibility

    Date: 08/03/07     Keywords: software

Im going the PC route for the first time (Im a lifetime apple-user and switching out of necessities involving school) and I'm thinking of getting some old PC software (Sim stuff, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, etc) and I was wondering if there will be compatibility issues since some of that is so old? I've never really used PC's and don't want to drop a bunch of money on software that won't work.

Basically: Will old software (98, XP, etc compatible) work on Vista? Will I have to install anything special to run them?

  19. Shutdown problems

    Date: 07/29/07     Keywords: no keywords

Good evening. I've been having a problem with my PC shutting down for a few weeks now and it seems to be getting worse as the days go by. I built my PC from scratch back in March and never had any problems until recently.

The computer rarely shut downs. It used to take a few seconds for it to shutdown completely but now it just seems to hang on the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen.

Unfortunately I have to hold the computer's start button down to switch it off completely and then when I boot up the following day I always get the following message as it's booting up:

    ****Warning: System BOOT Fail ****
Your system last boot fail or POST interrupted.
Please enter setup to load default and reboot again.

Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter Set-up.

Even on the rare occassion when the computer does shut down alright on it's own I still get the above message next time I boot up.

I've searched online for some answers but it seems to be people who overclock who get the same problem. I've not overclocked or tweeked any of my original settings. Does anybody have any ideas what the problem could be?

My PC specs are as follows:

    Windows Vista Home Premium
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+
    2GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX

  20. Winamp

    Date: 07/29/07     Keywords: google

So winamp has started acting up on me.  The sound will fade in and out for some reason.

    So, I present a 2 part question.

    1. Any clue as to why it might start doing that out of the blue?  Any recommendations to fix it? I've tried the uninstall/reinstall a few times to no avail.

    2. In case #1 is fruitless, any suggestions on an alternative mp3 player?  I'm a bit picky, I'll admit, but I'm willing to try most programs..  Windows Media Player is alright, it works for the time being, but I'd like suggestions so I can try out some new programs to see if any fit more what I like.  My Google searches haven't been overly successful.

    Thanks.
