  2. Installing a new hard drive

    Date: 09/10/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Is installing a new hard drive as simple as transferring all your data onto a DVD/CD, then taking out the old one, putting in the new one? Assuminging you swap an IDE for an IDE or a SATA for a SATA?

    thank you very much and enjoy the football today! :)

    Date: 09/09/07     Keywords: web

    I want to hide my desktop icons. The only way I know how won't work for me because I am missing the last set of thing that should appear when you right click and hit "properties" (show desktop icons, lock web items on desktop, run desktop clean wizard) How do I get those three things back?

    Date: 09/08/07     Keywords: web

    You know when you right click on your desktop, click properties, and click on the "desktop" tab and there are a whole bunch of backgrounds that are listed there? Well, all but one of mine are gone. I was probably messing with something I shouldn't have been a long time back.

    After talking with a friend of mine, I found out that they are all listed in the C: Windows/Web/Wallpaper folder. My question is.. how do I get them back into the area where they are all supposed to be? Thanks in advance for any help.

  9. Electronic Arts offering ad supported games

    Date: 09/05/07     Keywords: php, browser

    Electronic Arts is offering these games for download, free. They are ad supported:

    * Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
    * Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
    * Far Cry
    * Rayman Raving Rabbids
    * Command & Conquer Gold

    The original SD thread:

    Downloadsquad post:
    http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/09/02/download-free-games-from-fileplanet-and-electronic-arts/

    The deal is legit. Right now I'm trying Far Cry. The ad showed up after the developer credits and before the menu. The ad plays at level load screens. Also, static banners are present in the game menu. Right now all I see are ads from McDonald's. There is no indication that I see so far that this is the usual "adware" in the sense that the copy of Winpatrol that I have installed did not detect any new automatic processes being installed. If and when ads are pressed, the program just minimizes while the browser comes up.

    Other than those things it's the usual game of Far Cry.

  10. html help!

    Date: 09/02/07     Keywords: html

    Hello. This question if for somebody familiar with html. I have a basic knowledge of most codes, but I can't figure out how to justify text in my journal entries. I know it's some variation of text-align="justify", but I can't crack the code. I'd like to be able to make certain text justify the way that it does in this entry:

  11. Security Alert

    Date: 09/02/07     Keywords: virus

    I keep getting a bubble down near the lower right hand of the screen telling me of a System Alert. It says something about a virus or some such nonsense. I'm up-to-date, but it won't turn off. Actually, it keeps trying to sell me a product called VirusProtectPro.

    Hmmm it almost sounds like adware, but why can't I get rid of it?

  12. Does this sound reasonable?

    Date: 08/30/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I am thinking of getting a new hard drive for my computer. It would be a 250 GB one. The guy I talked to said the hard drive itself would cost about $140 Does that sound like lot for a 250 GB HD?

    He also said something about using my current HD as the master (or slave, I can't remember which), and using the new HD as the other. What does that mean? I know NOTHING when it comes to master/slave when it comes to computers.

  14. Motherboard/CPU queston

    Date: 08/29/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I have a Pentium 4 CPU 2.66 GHz with 248 MB of RAM.

    First off, I don't know how to determine the type of RAM I have without opening the case and I'm hoping to avoid doing that.

    Second, I would like a motherboard that is at least as good as the one I have if not better. How would I determine what I should get?

    I await your suggestions.

  15. This is driving me batty!

    Date: 08/28/07     Keywords: software, google

    I have a problem with Windows Media Player 11. It was working the way I wanted it to all of twenty minutes ago, and now it's borked.

    This is how I want it to look:

    See how when the library is on Album view, the albums just display as images and aren't grouped into any category (alphabetically or otherwise)?

    Mine is doing this all of a sudden:

    I want the stupid groupings gone. I have so little music on this computer that the groupings just take up a ton of extra space. Can I make them go away? I'm 99% sure when I opened WMP11 this afternoon, it wasn't grouping them like that...how can I get it back?

    I've googled to no avail.

    And please don't tell me that "your problem is that you're using Windows Media Player". I'm not asking for alternative media management software. I'd like to know how to fix the software I'm using.

    Thanks in advance.

  16. Computer Power

    Date: 08/26/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I have a wireless connection. Not DSL. It's something called Clearwire Wireless. I use a desktop. I am supposed to be able to shut it down completely at night; and when I restart it then next morning, I am SUPPOSED to be able to reconnect right away. I can't. I have to unplug a cord and then plug it back in Why would that be?

    Also, the clock in the lower right hand corner seems to stop when I power down my computer. Any ideas?

  17. Looking for good site to find which songs are explicit

    Date: 08/25/07     Keywords: no keywords

    So this may not be DIRECTLY related to computers and geeks, but I am the Manager of a Computer Parts store and we have streaming music to our overhead speakers, about 25,000 songs or so in our collection. I know you can go to Amazon or whatever and see what ALBUMS have explicit lyrics, but I would really like a track by track rundown, because a LOT of the artists we like have one or two explicit tracks and the rest do not have F bombs and whatnot. Why should we not be able to play, say, Nine Inch Nails "Fragile" because two or three tracks have swear words?

    So if you know of a site that has track by track "explicit" markers, or a program that can look at the collection and come back with which ones are explicit, i would much appreciate it.

    As it stands, I usually play 80's pop just to avoid F bombs

  18. Encryption Code deciphering

    Date: 08/24/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm currently hooked up to wireless internet. TO do so, I needed access to the encryption code that hooks me up to the modem. My only problem is that I cannot see the encryption code and I was wondering how to "hack" that code.

    I'm using WIndows XP Professional and it's hooking me up to a 2LIVE modem. When I look at the encryption code, all I see are asterisks.

    The alternative is to let that pedophile have access to my computer. ugh! No way!

    Can anyone help me?

  19. VOB to AVI conversion?

    Date: 08/24/07     Keywords: no keywords

    I have three VOB files, each about a gig in size, copied from an unencrypted DVD (a burned DVD of a friend's wedding).

    I'd like to convert these to AVI so I might edit them and upload them to YouTube.

    Terribly pedestrian requirements, but for the life of me, I can't find a VOB to AVI converter!

    Anyone know of any freeware that can do the conversion?

  20. Computer Majors?

    Date: 08/22/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Hey Everyone,
    This one is strictly directed towards computer PROFESSIONALS.
    I've got an associates degree generals and right now I'm a health care semi-professional. I've been wanting to go into computers since I was about 8 but everyone ALWAYS tells me there's no way you stand a chance unless you're a 4.0+ graduate from Harvard or if you live in India. Now I know that the outsourcing is only half true and theres still some jobs out there.

    But would you as a current professional recommend someone majoring in Computers?

    If so, what would you really suggest majoring in?
    Also, I have a few months off before I start back in college in the spring (I hate taking fall semester) and I was thinking perhaps I should get certified in some specialization. Would you recommend taking this step or is it truly a waste and not even looked at? Also, if so, what certification would you recommend?

    I really want to go into computers but I'm not sure if it's a fool's dream.

    Also, what do you recommend as a specific major?
