Just A Question
Date: 07/17/06
Keywords: no keywords
Greetings,
I have a few computers running in my house and I want to know how to set up a network using one computer for a quasi mass storage device/server of sorts. I know how to create a small home network but I need the info. on how to make all computers save to the server by default and allow selected people to access the files of that computer outside of the network. If I think of other things I need I will post more but I do belive this will suffice for now.
Thank you in advance,
Casey "Skrillz2002"

Just today my toshiba 2.5" 30g drive (in an external enclosure) has quit working. I listen close to it and can hear it making noises but I don't think it's the death click. Anyways, ALL of my data is on those platters so is there any at-home method to try and recover the data easily? This really sucks, I appreciate your help!

Smartphone 2003/WM 5 programming
Date: 07/11/06
Keywords: programming
I recently got a Cingular 2125 that has WM 5 Smartphone Edition on it. I want to learn how to do some programming for it. Thing is though that there's alot of literature online about SP 2003 programming, but not alot on WM 5. I did do some reading on SP 2003, but is all that basically useless given the new WM5? Or are the programming styles similar, akin more to .Net 1.0 - 1.1 vs 1.1 - 2.0?
Basically can I take 2003 knowledge and apply it to developing programs for WM5? Or are the two of them completely separate beasts? Thanks.

RSS Reader Help

Keywords: rss
My co-worker and I are working on a project. He enquired as to what I thought was the best/most popular RSS Readers/Aggregators around. I don't personally use a Reader for such as I use the feeds available via LJ and I've been out of the loop for a while so I don't have anything useful to tell him. Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.

computer science courses question
Date: 07/08/06
Keywords: programming, software, database, java
I am currently attending uc berkeley majoring in computer science. As part of the program at Berkeley, we get a lot of choice in the upper division computer science courses we take. Two upper division cs courses get chosen from a short list of six, two more from a short list of about fifteen, and two more from a long list which consists of technical electives in various related disciplines like math, engineering, and operations research. This variety is great -- if not a little overwhelming.
I'm just an undergraduate student with no clue of the Big Wide World around me; I want to make choices that are both practical and fun. When I graduate, I want to either work on a software team, or as a server-side internet developer. Here are some of the core courses I am thinking about taking - only there's not room in my schedule to take them. So my question is, I assume people reading this have spent some time in the Big Wide World, so, what courses would you look for in someone you were hiring into your company? (oh, and the mandatory courses I've already taken are Structure and Interpretation of computer programs, in Scheme, Data Structures, in Java, and Machine Structures, in C and Assembly.) Let's say you were sitting across the table from me, looking at my resume. Which one(s) of these courses would most pique your interest? Assume that as a student, I'm interested in all of the courses listed below, so the advice "take what you are most interested in" unfortunately won't help me much. Thanks for any feedback!
List of courses on my personal short list, needs to be pruned:
User Interface Design and Development
Software Engineering
Foundations of Computer Graphics
Operating Systems and System Programming
Programming Languages and Compilers
Introduction to Database Systems
Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
Introduction to Communication Networks
Computing with Data
Industrial Design and Human Factors
Industrial and Commercial Data Systems
Introduction to Design of Human Work Systems and Organizations

more bitching about "public" betas
Date: 07/05/06
Keywords: microsoft
i bitched a few weeks ago about Microsoft making Vista a public beta, and lo and behold customers are coming in complaining about it crashing/running slow, and "Why doesn't program XYZ run now?".
Get a customer in today running Internet Explorer 7 beta and complaining that a site used to work and render properly in IE6 but now it doesn't, but he wants to keep IE7 because "it's the latest version"
I knew this would happen.
If you are going to install a Beta, at least accept the responsibility that comes with TROUBLESHOOTING IT ON YOUR OWN!

This sounds like the right community to post this in. I have 2 hard drives in my computer that are both partitioned if it makes any difference. I only use 1 of the hard drives so the other is just there doing nothing. What i wanted to know is can i have windows XP on my main hard drive and windows 98 on the other hard drive. Someone told me this was possible and that when i boot my comp up it will ask what hard drive i want to start up with but i dont want anything to start conflicting with other programs on my computer. The reason i want to have windows 98 is to play a few old games that XP dosnt support. Thanks for replies in advance

i am looking for recommendations for email hosting.
my requirements are:
- must be allowed to host your own domain
- must have a web interface that is fast and not bloated
- must have at least 2 GB of IMAP storage space available
- must have custom spam filtering options available
preferable but not required:
- web locker space available
running my own email server is not an option at this point. I was previously using fastmail.fm, but lately their uptime has been terrible and i'm very annoyed with the downtime. suggestions?

2nd SLI worth it?
Date: 07/02/06
Keywords: no keywords
I currently have a nVIDIA 256MB GeForce 7800GT with SLI support. It gets the job done rather well, but I've been wondering whether or not it is worth it to get another card and bridge them together. Has anyone tried SLI on their machine? This will be about a $300 endeavor for me. To anyone who has done this before, at the end of the day did you feel like it was worth basically paying for 2 video cards? Thanks.

snadboy revelation v2 was installed. i uninstalled it but i imagine the damage is already done.
this computer is on my home network that i share with my neighbor. are all the computers potentially compromised? what do i need to do to check?

HardDrives on a Dell PowerEdge 4400
Date: 06/29/06
Keywords: web
Ok guys, I wouldn't be asking anything from the community unless I have the answers myself, and believe me, this has been bugging me for some time now.
Long story short, I recently got my hands on a free second hand Dell PowerEdge 4400 server.
From what I can tell and what was told to me, it has:
Dual P3 Xeon 866mhz
1.5gb Ram pc133
1x 16gb 10k SCSI HDD
Windows 2000 Server (?)
Integrated VGA
SB value 16bit sound card
Unfortunatly, I don't have a spare monitor nor outlet space, so I haven't booted up the tower yet.
Now, the server uses a hot swappable SCSI array (of which flavor, I haven't found out yet).
Is there anyway to make this machine accept IDE or SATA drive, or rig something like an IDE or SATA array. I mean, It was used as a Web Server, so I could understand the pathetic single SCSI HDD, but I myself would want to give it a bit more of a functionality by giving it more HDD room. I don't want to use "Server Grade" HardDrives since they aren't exactly cheap at all. I would rather stock this server with cheaper drives that has a higher storage capacity. The machine, will at the most, might turn into a type of Audio/media storage server, ideal for home and for use to share the said file in my college dorm/network. Reliability and redudency will not be a top priority for right now.
This is my first real server to hold and call my own. I'm a PC power user, but by no means an expert. If anybody can help, please do. I give my thanks in advance.

Stupid Question

How do I disable all hyperlinks in a word document in Office 2000? I just copied a page off Thottbot for World of Warcraft, & every time I click on something to edit it, it opens IE. It's getting really annoying & I'm not going through well over 200 hyperlinks one by one. It's driving me insane.
Thanks in advance.

Boot problem
Date: 06/29/06
Keywords: virus, spyware
Relevant parts:
Mustang 350W ATX power supply
Albatron PX915G PRO
Pentium 4 2.66GHz 550FSB Prescott core
I'd list the drives but the computer can't even get that far, so I can't see that it matters.
What happened:
We had a bunch of storms last week, and while I did my best to be careful and unplug things, there were a couple of surprise storms while I was stuck at work. Last Tuesday, the 20th, I was in the middle of working on a spreadsheet when the whole thing shut down and rebooted itself. It was fine for the rest of the day, so I sort of went, "Wow, that was bizarre," and then forgot about it... until Wednesday, when it did it again. It proceeded to get progressively worse, rebooting more often, and the last few times it did reboot, it took three or four tries just to boot the BIOS. Saturday night I tried to turn it on when I got home from work, and it wouldn't boot at all.
What I did:
When it was still just randomly rebooting, I ran Ad Aware and Spyware Blaster repeatedly, thinking that I had some kind of spyware or virus. When it started having difficulty booting anything at all, I decided it had to be a hardware issue, and probably not HD related since it sometimes couldn't do anything before it would have to start over and try again. I wondered aloud to a somewhat-hardware-savvy friend at work about whether the mobo could have gotten fried, and he said that when his own was hit once, it was completely dead, whereas on mine the fans and lights and junk like that all come on. We concluded that it might be the CPU that got fried. Replaced that today... and... nothing. Did some more Googling and forum-reading, and I finally realized that it's probably the power supply, which I had previously stupidly ruled out just because some stuff was running and was, therefore, getting power. I've never had one fail on me and I didn't know that they were capable of partially working. But then I read this:
"When the actual power supply fails, it can exhibit a number of symptoms. You could experience crashes, data corruption, or hardware failure. Another thing that could happen is that when you turn on your PC, the lights and fans come on, but it doesn't boot, because the BIOS cannot verify a sufficient and consistent power flow is established before it continues the Power On Self Test (POST) and the boot process."
which is from http://www.PCNineOneOne.com
I've also read in several places that the power supply is the most common thing to go out after an electrical surge. So at this point I'm convinced that the power supply is bad. Basically I'd just like some other, more informed opinions, because several hours ago I was convinced that the CPU was bad. I'd take the supply somewhere to get tested except that anywhere I can go will probably charge me more than the damn thing is worth, so... Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
