  2. Good Wireless BT routers

    Date: 07/31/06     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking to get a wireless router for my dad's house. Thing is I need a router that works well with Bit Torrent. At my own house I have a WRT54G I believe.. which I used a custom firmware and code to get BT transfers to work. Does anyone know of other wireless routers that work well with BT downloads? TIA

  5. Help me choose a new laptop!

    Date: 07/29/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi,

I'm in the market for a new laptop since the one I currently have is a piece of shit that keeps crashing on me. It's a Compaq Presario 2100 that my Mom got me as a present 3 years ago, and in the past year the hard drive has died and it's randomly crashed 3 times because of weird Windows errors (so I guess I don't know if it's the computer, Windows, or both sucking).

Whenever you ask people what kind of computer is best, you get a different answer. Some people like Dell, but I've heard some bad things about them. Others like Toshiba, but I've also heard some bad things about those as well. I know a lot of people like Macs, but I'm not really looking to get a Mac, however, because I can't afford one and because I haven't really liked or been able to acclimate myself to OS X. I don't think I want a Compaq again after this one has had so many problems.

I really only need a basic computer. I don't need a large hard drive (mine is 40GB and it's never been full), I would like a minimum of 512mb RAM (I don't play games too much, and the games I play are a few years old, anyway). I know all laptops out now probably have wireless included, but I want to make sure the wireless card included in the computer is going to actually work well, and I don't know the difference between them.

I am willing to spend around $500, and less if possible.

I really WANT to get a laptop, but I might be persueded into a desktop if you think I could get something better for the price, even though it's less convenient.

    Thanks!

  6. Laptop for sale.

    Date: 07/28/06     Keywords: software

I'm selling my laptop. My lovely, lovely Dell Latitude D600. I realized that with me getting a brand-new D620 for work in a few weeks, and having an iBook, a desktop, a PocketPC, and use of Mike's PowerBook and desktop when necessary, I don't really need my Latitude anymore.

It's got a 1.6GHz Centrino, Intel 2200 B/G wireless (A+ wireless card), 768MB DDR RAM, DVD/CD-RW, SXGA+ 14.1" display (1400x1050 - amazing resolution for gaming and coding and stuff), 40GB Toshiba 5200rpm HDD (still has at least a year on the warranty), gigabit ethernet, etc. Most of the components are pretty dang new - the top casing is all new, the keyboard was just recently replaced, the hard drive is newer (I had to RMA it after I dropped my laptop while it was on). Comes with Windows XP/Pro SP1 and all the original drivers/software CDs.

Still has one year of CompleteCare/Next Business Day warranty, which I can transfer to whoever buys it. This is an A+ warranty that covers any kind damage except fire, theft, and that which is blatantly obvious it was deliberate. The hard drive has its own warranty through Toshiba and doesn't require transfer of warranty - it's tied to the drive's serial number.

I'd like to get around $600 for it, plus shipping. If you're interested, comment or email me at shifuimam AT gmail DOT com. It's been taken care of extremely well. I will also include a microfiber screen protector that you can place between the display and the keyboard when the laptop is closed. The battery is new and can last for somewhere around four hours without wireless on and lowered screen brightness (I think - don't hold me to that).

If this post is inappropriate, please remove it or tell me to remove it.

  7. Question

Date: 07/27/06     Keywords: asp, web, google

I was wondering if anyone can assist me with this.  I have to do a web page (in asp.net) that consumes of a web service that desplays the result on my site. For example, the site will provide live scores of some type of sporting event on the page, provide current weather conditions, provide sale information from a site like Amazon or Google, or present a map from Mapquest or another mapping site to a meeting.  Something like that.  If there is any way someone can assist me with this that would be appreciated. Thanks

  9. Question for you

    Date: 07/26/06     Keywords: security

I'm building a home server (with a 350G Western Digital HD), and want to know which is better:

-Installing the operating system in the 350G hard drive,
-Partitioning off reserved space for the OS (and add another partition for data),
-Or giving the OS its own smaller hard drive (for security)?

    Much with the thanking~

  10. WordPress PHP Coder?

    Date: 07/26/06     Keywords: database

Anyone here skilled at hacking WordPress?

I need to find someone who can re-code the signup page to a WordPress site to include the collection of additional data and then insert it into the database. I have installed the two plug-ins that extend the metadata and create new user fields. So it's just a case of re-coding the registration page with new fields and doing the inserts after the account is created. The goal is to have individuals who wish to enter a contest do it by signing up for a wordpress blog - the extra fields will be for the contest, and then they'll be both in the database as well as signed up for blog updates (as part of the contest).

Anyone have the skills? If so, how long do you expect it would take, and what can I bribe you with?

  11. 1394 Spec / length

    Date: 07/25/06     Keywords: no keywords

Every single piece of literature I've read, specify 1394A as being rated for 4.5 meters, and the main systems we build (High End Avid Systems) rate tolerance at 14.76 feet. However, we have a client that has several runs of over 30ft with no problems. No repeaters, no Distribution Amplifiers. Plain and simple: 6 pin from a deck to a 6 pin input on a PC (or in some cases, a 4 pin) with no problems. In fact, we even introduced a passive switcher after the deck, which adds at least 6 feet of cable, with no issues.

Since the extra 2 pins on a 6 pin 1394 cable are NOT used to amplify a signal, only to power a device on the other end, how is a 30 ft run possible? I completely understand manufacturers conservative estimates to protect themselves, but TWICE the MAX length seems a bit far fetched.

Anyone have any documentation to prove what's happening is legit and not just a random act of Geek Gods?

    Thanks!

  13. Video card problem

    Date: 07/24/06     Keywords: no keywords

I recently upgraded to a mobo with a PCIEx16 slot (ASUS Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD and all that junk), so I purchased an eVGA Geforce 7600GS video card for it. I connected everything properly as far as I'm aware, but when I try to turn on the thing it goes on a boot loop.

First I see the ASUS card screen, then the screen flickers and shows brief system info. Then it goes to the "Windows could not boot normally" screen and gives me the options for safe mode and all of that. But no matter what option I choose, it gives me a momentary flicker of the Windows boot screen, then a millisecond blue screen which goes by so fast I can't even read it, and then it goes black and starts up all over again.

I only hear one "all is normal" beep from the system, so I don't understand what the problem is. Help? This has been taking a mental toll on me lately and I just want my damn computer to work.

    Date: 07/24/06     Keywords: no keywords

Hey guys. I just recently posted a few days ago with this problem and seen that nothing was working that you guys were suggesting. What I ended up doing was reformatting my computer.

    Still no sound.

I take it something is wrong, if you guys have any ideas, that would help greatly, that way I can tell my father and he can go out and buy a new sound card if needed. =/

  15. Dual Layer burning problems

    Date: 07/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

My computer has a dual layer burner in it. However I have yet to successfully burn a Dual Layered (DVD-9) disc. I use Nero to try and burn it, along with some other burning products, and they all seem to screw up when they are done burning the first layer. I know that DL burning is kinda screwed up since last I checked there was no set "standard" for such burning. I was wondering though if there was anything I could do to help "fix" this. Any suggestions?

Ok at first glance this may sound stupid however, does anyone know where Skype-1.2 hides its sound files? I want to replace the default incoming call ring with a 425 HZ dial tone that I
generated. I'd say I've tried basically everything without knowing the format i.e., find mountpoint | grep -i wav, find mountpoint | grep -i mp3, etc. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

  17. Sound trouble

    Date: 07/21/06     Keywords: no keywords

Alright well I'm having a sound problem with one of my computers. It's running Windows XP. The sound suddenly gave out about a month and a half ago and is still not fixed.

I've made sure nothing was muted, I've tried putting headphones into the speaker jack, I've ran through the troubleshooter, I've went into the Services under the Control Panel to make sure it is set to automatic, and with all of this it's still not working. I even system restored back two months to when it did work [which I don't even know if it would have fixed it anyways, but that's besides the point].

So that's where you guys come in! Any idea of what happened? Did the sound card die? I even uninstalled all the audio drivers and restarted my computer and had them auto-detect them back.

If you could help, that would be the greatest! ♥

  18. nVidia GeForce 6600 problem :(

    Date: 07/21/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hello, dear geeks.
I have an issue with my GeForce 6600 based 256mb video adapter.
It all was normal, until yesterday I installed and run Uber Soldier game. At the begining it was running smoothly, but after couple minutes of gameplay picture start flickering and show me some psychodelic colors. Then it went all crazy. I quit and uninstall the game. Now ALL of my 3d applications (video adapter benchmarks, all games...) are not usable. Some of the videofiles aren't usable to. I tried reinstalling video drivers (clean installiation of 91.31, 91.33 and couple of old ones), codecs and players, even windows and all program files (with deleting old windows directory). Nothing helps. 3d aplication still crazy. Please, help me to solve this weird problem. Thank you very much.
P.S.: No, I didn't try to overclock my card.

  19. Help?

    Date: 07/21/06     Keywords: no keywords

I have a PC that recently turned off on it's own, I figured it had just overheated and maybe their was too much around the vents. So I moved everything and unplugged my computer for the night. When I turned it on again the next day it turned off after a 1/2 hour again. It did this one more time much later that day. However now I can't get it to turn on at all.

The green light on the back of the computer is on showing it's recieving power, but when I push the on button that light turns off. Can anyone help me?

  20. Device driver prevents sleep mode

    Date: 07/17/06     Keywords: software

I am tired of having to turn my computer on and off because it can't go into sleep or hibernate. After a period of inactivity, I get a box with this error message: "The device driver for the 'Communications Port (COM1)'device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

COM1 is where the docking port for my Palm IIIx (stop snickering; there's no point in upgrading something that works just fine and does what I need!). I've tried removing the docking port, removing the port and un-installing the software - any combination you can imagine, with full shutdowns in between, and also reinstalling the Palm III software. Same message. Is there something in a registry I need to kill? If I will have to give up the Palm backup, I'm willing to do that just so I don't go through a half a dozen shutdowns a day to keep the heat down. As it is, the power supply is failing and will have to be replaced very soon. But simply un-installing the program with "Remove Program" doesn't help.

I'm on a custom built computer running Win XP. Tell me if you need hardware details and I"ll ferret them out, but this seems to be a software issue. Thanks for any help you can give.
