In order to repair the Windows XP, our computer is asking for an administrator's password and installation number. How do we figure out where we find these? We have no clue what they are :)

Big Time Computer Trouble
Date: 10/28/05
Keywords: virus
Cross-posted in a bunch of places, cause we're desperate. :)
Our computer starts up fine, but once you get to the windows XP profile screen and select a profile, it freezes almost immediately. Programs will only run in Safemode with command prompts, because no desktop loads in that mode. Through the task manager, we can access programs, so we have cleaned the regisrty and run virus-cleaners that say there are infected files on the computer. However, we deleted the infected files and still the same problems. Hard dick-check says there are problems with the disk, but it can't fix them because the disk is in use. We can't figure out how to do a basic DOS run.
Can anyone surmise what's going on here? And, can anyone point us in the right direction in terms of what to do to remedy the situation? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello! I need help picking a new motherboard...
Date: 10/27/05
Keywords: no keywords
I recently picked up a rather heavily 3D game.
The game is great (black and white 2!!), but the frame rate is terrible.
A lot of times I can see the screen going from one frame to the next frame like a cheap flip book, which I've also seen happen when I was playing Sim2 a long long time ago.
I thought that perhaps I should replace my processor and probably the motherboard too, since I was thinking about getting a processor other than the 2.8Ghz Celeron I have in my computer right now. I upped my RAM to a gig from 256MB, and I got a decent graphics card for my computer (a 128MB PCI graphics card - turns out my desktop doesn't have an AGP slot, which is another reason why I want to try a different motherboard so that I can use my 256MB AGP graphics card). But when it comes to motherboards and processors, I have no idea what is good and what is not so good. (especially when it comes to AMD processors, I have no feel for how good or not good a processor is compared to it's intel counterpart)
So: Please recommend me a good gaming motherboard-processor combination!
Feel free to recommend a motherboard and then a separate processor: I've never assembled a processor onto a motherboard, but I think I could learn. I'm willing to spend hmm.... up to $400? Hopefully not that much.. I was hoping to get a nice motherboard-processor combination for around $250~$300. (even that seems like a lot of money..) I mostly game, torrent files (usually a couple gigs big), and do image editing on my computer (usually 40~70MB large photoshop files), and I want to make my computer into a very gaming friendly machine for 3D games like Sim 2 and Black and White.

Ok Master Chief's I have a little problem.
Lately as I go to put my computer in to stand-by mode, my computer freezes. I go to the start menu, click turn off computer and then it freezes (I'm using Windows Xp) By freeze I mean, I can still move the mouse and if I try to bring up the WINDOW TASK MANAGER it just keeps appearing and overlapping its self in an endless loop.
What could be the problem? Any suggestions on fixing the problem?
All help is greatly appreciated

CPU issues
Date: 10/19/05
Keywords: linux
So my computer is a custom built computer, just a very generic computer as it's all my budget could afford at the time almost 3 years ago.
I have 2 hard drives, 512 memory, pentium 4, and a ECS Elitegroups motherboard. It's done pretty well since I got it minus a few hiccups, until recently that is.
Lately it's been running super loud, and so I changed out the CPU fan and cleaned up the other fans and it kind of quieted down for awhile, and now it's extremely loud and painful sounding. It's beyond a natural loudness of an old computer.
So I'm watching my system monitor which says my CPU is constantly at 100%, I've tried reinstalling both windows and linux (I dual-boot) to see if I had a config problem but nothing seems to help. I can't afford a whole new computer yet, does anyone have any reccomendations on how I can fix it? Should I just get a new CPU or should I just replace my entire motherboard? Opinions? How long will my computer last with my CPU constantly at 100%?
Anyone got a motherboard/CPU they're willing to give up? ;) Just thought I'd ask.

Virus Info

A worm is being propogated via Instant Messengers (MSN and AOL affected).
I received this message today:
LOL!! http://home.earthlink.net/~xxx/picture007.com
Real link removed for your protection.
I downloaded the file, McAfee VirusScan 9 didn't detect a virus, but it's a good thing I ran it through multiple scanners before I ran it.
Bottom line is, if someone sends you a link to a .exe or .com file, especially if its an unknown contact, you better damn well know what they are sending or else its most surely a virus.

Video Problem
Date: 10/18/05
Keywords: no keywords
OK. This is going to be hard to explain since I'm terrible when it comes to computer technicalities, but I'll try my best.
I have this movie on my computer, Requiem for a Dream, to be exact. So I decide to play it on RealPlayer and something wierd happens. The audio is completely fine, but the picture is messed up in a way like it's in a wierd color and the screen is divided as if the same thing is being repeated.
I've tried it also in Windows Media Player and RealOne Player.
I have all the available video codecs. It's a divx2 AVI Video type of movie. Please help me.
I searched for help everywhere online (which is where I got the idea of downloading all the codecs)and I asked friends and done everything I can do.
