1. Selling a proc and memory for cheap.

    Date: 07/16/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have an XP2200+ proc (Socket A) and 1 gig of 184-pin DIMM DDR PC2700 (2 x 512 modules) that I am looking to sell.

My motherboard died at Million Man LAN and I'll prolly just get a newer mobo/proc/memory.

If anyone is genuinely interested in buying either of these items let me know.

    XP2200+ looking to get ~$40
DDR 2700 memory looking to get ~$60 bucks for both 512 modules
The prices i've listed are 1/2 of what is listed for a new version of them online.

Neither of these items have been overclocked.

  2. Found a Great Deal

    Date: 07/16/05     Keywords: no keywords

I just wanted to let everyone know that I found an awesome deal on a laptop. I wanted a laptop for internet and word processing that can also run a few games (nothing hard core although they did have a system, the 9300, that would run some pretty nice games). I happened to find a really good deal online and thought I'd share in case anyone is looking for a deal on a laptop.

Dell is running a sale where you get $750 of a laptop that you configure to order to a price of $1499 or more. For $826.00 (before tax which was only $70, and shipping which was only $19) I bought a laptop with the following specs: Pentium M 1.60ghz, 533mhz fsb, 2mb cache, 512mb DDR2 SDRAM (Price wise it pays to upgrade to a gig myself), 15.4 in screen, 40gb HD, DVD+/-RW Dual Layer/CD-RW Drive, 128 mb ATI X300 PCI-Express video card, built in wireless, and a 2 year warranty. The system would normally cost over $1500 and Best Buy had a similar system from HP (but with integrated video and no DVD burner, but 60gb HD) priced at $1699.

The sale is only until 7/18 at 5:59 AM or until they sell 10,000. www.dell.com/save750 . Just thought I should share in case anyone needed one.

  3. Hello!

Date: 07/15/05     Keywords: programming, technology, linux

Hi, I've been watching this community for a couple of days now, so I guess I better introduce myself.

The name's Sam. I'm 17 years of age, currently doing a-levels in Milton keynes, england. I'm hoping to go to university next year, aiming for a degree in computer games technology in manchester, or computer games programming in Huddersfield. Haven't made my mind up yet.

If you haven't already noticed, I'm a total gaming nut. Mostly into rpgs, some strategies, and some first person shooters. Ooh, and I love retro gaming. I also run linux on my old box too. I tried to install it on my new box, but failed. I'm a total linux noob, but love it all the same.

My current system is an amd athlon 64 3400+ s939, geforce 6600, 1gb of ram, running xp and almost SuSE linux 9.2, but I'm still working on that.

My old pc is diabolical, and I don't know much about it, other than its a 750mhz amd with 128mb of ram and 32mb graphics card, running win98 and linux. Oh, and my other old pc is an oric.

I suppose you can find anything else about me from my geek code:

  4. LCD Monitors

I am looking to replace my 19" monitor with a 17" or 19" LCD monitor. I do some moderate gaming but from what I have heard, LCD monitors aren't good for gaming in general. Can anyone give me more information on this? Are there any good LCD monitors for gaming?

    TIA

  7. File sizes

    Date: 07/14/05     Keywords: linux

    Ok, this is confusing.

I have two machines - a server and a workstation - both running debian linux. Previously my workstation was Windows XP, so the main file disk (which has about 50GB of files on it) is compressed NTFS.

I wanted to reformat this disk to ext3 so I rsynced (rsync -avz) the files over the network onto my server (yes, slow, but I don't have any free drive slots on my server). Before I reformat I needed to make sure that the files had copied ok.

First, I tested the filesystem against the copy using du, but found a difference of about 5MB. In windows, comparing the directories found that the copy was missing 4 files.

A diff -r of both directories showed nothing.

Any ideas what could explain the missing data?

Should I perhaps not use rsync to copy the files and instead copy it over using nfs or something?

  8. Which Certification?

    Date: 07/13/05     Keywords: no keywords

I've just graduated from high school in june, and I've been dreading the thought of having to jump straight into college. I have my A+ certification, and my intent is to go through college to earn the MCSE certification, but I want to know if there is another way to get it without paying out the (expletive deleted) for college. Also, I'm wondering if I should get a different certification instead or beforehand. I've had my eyes on the Network+, and people I talk to say to get something else, but I'd rather get all the certifications that I can. It wouldn't hurt~

So what would be my next best move? I'm currently trying for a job and after I have enough credentials and skills I want to get into some good business. Any thoughts? (please)

  9. Network printer did work, now doesn't

    Date: 07/12/05     Keywords: google

(UPDATE: Still looking for suggestions, as the first one didn't seem to be the problem. I left in the part about the lightning, but I really don't think that is that problem because I haven't been able to access the printer since we first replaced the router, about a month before the lightning.)

I hope there's not something painfully obvious that I'm missing here, but I've gone through all the troubleshooters on my computer, and unless I'm using the wrong search terms, a Google search gets me the same suggestions that I got from the troubleshooters. If you have a solution for me, that would be perfect, but if you can at least give me some ideas for other things to try, I would appreciate that just as much.

I am using a 4 year old Toshiba laptop (although that probably doesn't matter) with Windows XP. It is connected to the internet through a wireless connection to the main family computer. The internet works fine, and always has. A couple of months ago, however, our router died (I don't remember what brand it was) and we got a new one (Linksys). Since then, I haven't been able to connect to the printer. Several weeks ago, we had a lightning storm and a lightning strike hit very close to the house. It blew out our router, our cable modem, and the ethernet card in the main computer. We bought a new Linksys router, but I still can't send anything to the printer. The ethernet card is still blown, but the modem is now connected through a USB adapter.

I don't know how much of that information is useful, but basically, I can't figure out how to print to that printer. My computer tells me that it can't detect the printer, and to make sure it is turned on and online. The printer is shared, and my parents have run the network setup wizard on the main computer. I've tried running the wizard on my computer, but it insists on bridging my connections and that makes the internet stop working entirely. I don't remember having to do anything complicated to connect to the printer before...it seems like I just searched for it and it was there. Ideas? Thanks. :)

(P.S. My dad has a similarly aged Sony Vaio laptop that also used to be able to print remotely, but it can't either.)

I have done something annoyingly dumb.

I have installed a new hard disk on my home machine and went to work, leaving it to finish a bad block scan that I started last night.

Unfortunately I forgot to screen the session so I have no way of seeing what the output is.

Is there some magical way to view what's being written to another TTY or does mkfs automatically log somewhere...?

  13. Customizing XP "Send To"

    Date: 07/11/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm trying to customize my Send To menu for XP and I remember it being in C:/Documents and Settings/Username/Send To but I'm not seeing it. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I'm trying this on my computer at work. They're running XP Pro and I know they have a lot of user restrictions on. I know they have folders protected but can they make one not appear? I've looked in my profile folder and All Users. Thanks for any help.

  14. Fetching erased data!

Date: 07/11/05     Keywords: programming, web, linux

Okay guys, trust me I looked at the rules before posting this but I need some major help ASAP.
I am quite experienced working with computers (Linux, Programming, web design, etc.)
However, I haven't learned anything about finding old data that someone deleted from their computer or overrided.

My mother is a court reporter, she's spent this entire weekend working on an 800 page transcript.
She somehow erased the entire document and then saved a blank document under the same name of the old document, therefore wiping out many hours of work.
She is currently having a heart attack. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to go back and fetch the data.
I've told her not to save anything else until I see what I can do.

Can anyone please point me to how I might find the info and bring it back up? Please? She was dreading this particular job all week and I'd really like to help her get it back.
Links, explainations, anything would be great help.

X-Posted, sorry if its not allowed, this is a bit too important to care much.

  16. A card too far

    Date: 07/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Hello everyone.

I recently bought a Ati Radeon 9200 video card and when I installed it I had a few problems. My computer would start up very slow and the resolution would start out at a very low number( just a hair above 600x800 I believe) Then if I tired to increase the resolution, my computer would restart.

I am thinking it's possible my computer is not able to handle the new video card; here are my specs.

    Amd Athlon 1800 +
    1.49 GHZ
    512 MB Ram
    Radeon 700 (previous video card)
    Plextor DVDR PX-716A
    2 seperate hard drives = 145 GIG

This computer i'm using is being slowly built up from the average piece it used to be, I believe if I replace the Motherboard, processor, double the memory and with the new video card i'll be on my way.

I would appreciate any advice/wisdom on the subject, thank you

  17. I want YOUR opinons

    Date: 07/09/05     Keywords: html

Well I've finally decided on a gadget. The HP Ipaq hx4705 pda. It has a 4" vga screen, 624mhz cpu, windows mobile 2003 SE (with a wm5 upgrade on the way) and many other great features. Read about it here: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11982_na/11982_na.HTML#Standard%20Features

I decided on this against the Dell Axim X50V because the battery life was terrible. The only drawback with this Ipaq is the "intuitive" touchpad- most reviewers were disgusted buy it. However I prefer touchpads on laptops and this one actually works the same way, cursor and all. Or you can use it as the standard 5 button pad, just without actual buttons (tapping).

Anyways after careful consideration and thought, I feel that this is the best bang for my buck and will keep me up to date for quite a while. Before taking the dive I want your opinions before finalizing my decision.

  18. Question about using Mixed mode on wifi router

    Date: 07/08/05     Keywords: no keywords

We just recently upgraded our wireless equipment, and my stepdad (having to buy the most expensive stuff) bought the Linksys Wireless b/g srx router. It works great, speed and range are excellent, but I have one queston: Will using wireless B and wireless G simultaneously with the router affect performance? I was told somewhere that the whole network would slow down to wireless b speeds, but I want to be sure. Thanks in advance~

    Thanks.
