1. Strange Problems with nVidia 6600GT

    Date: 07/08/05     Keywords: no keywords

I purchased a nVidia 6600GT (agp version) a few months back and at apparently random points while playing a 3D intense app (Half-Life 2 / CS: S in this case), it hangs after playing from anywhere between 15 minutes all the way to 45 or more.

To be more accurate, the screen freezes and the sound loops ad infinitum (probably a quarter second sample that just loops infinitely) and the computer doesn't respond to any input short of restarting it.

I've gone through tons and tons of forums and support related sites and I've tried all sorts of things:

    1. Not a sound issue - happens w/ out soundblaster or without any sound drivers installed at all.
    2. Changed memory setup from dual to single channel - no dice.
    3. Changed AGP speed from 8x to 4x - no dice.
    4. Enabled motherboard chipset compatibility mode with RivaTuner - no dice.
    5. Tested it with fastwrite set to both on and off - no dice.
    6. Updated the drivers - neither nVidia's newest or the most current forceware drivers make any difference (currently using nVidia forceware drivers ver. 7.7.7.2).

Nothing is overclocked on the system, so nothing should be problematic on that front.

I thought it might have been an overheating problem, but I purchased an Arctic Cooling (NV Silencer 6) heatsink, and that didn't change a thing. And sadly there is no option in the bios on this particular version of the 6600GT to monitor the temp.

The specs for my system are as follows:
    AMD 3200+ CPU
    ASUS A7V880 motherboad
2 512 sticks of DDR PC3200 memory in dual channel setup
A single 160 gig SATA hard drive.
    A PCI soundblaster live
And the card itself is a nVidia Rosewill 6600GT AGP running the nVidia forceware 7.7.7.2 driver set.

  3. Compaq Presario 1245

    Date: 07/06/05     Keywords: web

    Greetings,
I am currently seeking the Compaq Quick System Restore CD's for the Compaq Presario 1245 Laptop.

I've inherited the laptop as a hand me down, and it's missing all of its original drivers. I've spent days working on the machine, and currently have Win98 running on it, but it's still missing the right drivers. I did all sorts of searching on the Compaq site. Downloading has worked for the audio drivers, but not for the video/monitor driver and others. When the Neo Magic drivers try to install, it has errors. I am fairly certain after quite a bit of research that I need the Quick Restore CD's. Unfortunately, Compaq/HP no longer sells or supports these, and they seem nigh impossible to find on the web.

I figured that someone out there had or has a Compaq Presario 1245 and can help me out. I am willing to pay shipping to get the CD's to me, and even willing to ship them back if needed. I just want to get this poor machine working again.

Hope someone can help ! (x-posted)

  5. Turning on the computer.

    Date: 07/05/05     Keywords: no keywords

Two things I want to do:

    1. I want to complete unistall Windows XP from my slave drive while still being able to use it to store stuff on.

    2. Whenever I turn my computer on, it keeps asking which OS I want to use. One is the one on my main drive, and the other is the one on my slave drive (which would be nice to delete).

    Help?

  6. Formatting that extra hard drive.

    Date: 07/05/05     Keywords: no keywords

First, I want to take a moment to resurrect a hard drive formatting question I posed a few days ago.

I asked about removing those extra partitions from a previous installation. I finally figured out what I was supposed to do. Delete ALL partitions. That simple.

I've been trying to just delete just the extra partitions, but then I realized I should delete the main partition, too. Now it's all one complete hard drive, no partitions. Cool huh?

Now that I did that, I installed Windows XP on the slave drive. I have a 120 GB¹ drive but can only use 112 GB of it. Could I somehow reclaim more of the drive? After all, it's supposed to be a 120 GB drive, right?

It does say that it has 1.58 GB in use and 112 GB available. What is that 1.58 GB and can I reclaim it on my slave drive?

¹ more like 117 GB, I think. It has something to do with defining memory size in base-10 and base-2 formats. I never could understand wrap my mind around that.

  7. <<>>

    Date: 07/03/05     Keywords: linux, ebay

Well to be perfectly honest, I'm bored. I've been looking for a new project or gadget to keep me busy for a while. I've been looking at a cheaper panasonic toughbook on ebay, then at a NEC MobilePro 780 (900's are way too expensive) or just a new pda of some sort (PocketPC or Linux)

I CAN'T Decide what I want to try. Every idea has it's pros and cons:

Toughbook: +very resourceful, -but older, -less battery life, -expensive
Mobilepro: +Inexpensive (~100), -Older, -less capable pda, +unique
Pda: +Newer, +midrange price, +more capable, +many available to choose from, -constantly outdated

I don't know. Call me a fool and his money, but I just need something different and interesting to occupy myself with for a while. Opinions/suggestions welcome.

  8. Woo!

    Date: 07/03/05     Keywords: no keywords

The whole story is on my journal. The short version is that I added 512MB of RAM to my system today.

Thus, now I can do this:
    Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I didn't actually have Fedora 4 CDs to hand though, so it's RH9, because that's all I could find quickly.

    I rock.

  10. A little Reformatting help, please?

    Date: 07/02/05     Keywords: no keywords

I want to reformat my 120 GB slave HD with a Windows XP CD but the drive had been previously formatted with 20 GB partitioned.

I removed the partitions, or so I thought, but my attempts to reformat the HD would only offer to format the HD up to the first 90+ GB while leaving the other 20+ GB out of the reformat.

Can anyone give me a hand doing this?

Also, I think the computer stopped formatting after a while (got up to 57%, I think). Am I doing something wrong?

When I lasst connected to my ISP, it says I am connecting at 41.2Kbps but yet it seems to be going fairly slow for me. I thought the higher you connect, the faster your experience. I am on dial-up and usually get somewhere between 29-38 Kbps. I have a 56k modem. Am I wrong in my thinking?

  13. ATI Radeon 9550

    Date: 07/01/05     Keywords: no keywords

Would you recommend upgrading from my ATI Radeon 9200 128mb (AGP) to the Radeon 9550 256mb? It's not the best, but it looks nice. I don't game all that much, if at all, but I'm returning a pos linksys pci wifi card to walmart and I don't see anything else I want to exchange it for. After the exchange it would only cost me ~$70. What do you think?

  14. Video playback problems

    Date: 06/30/05     Keywords: no keywords

For some reason, some of my video files/movies aren't playing the video. Just the audio.

Windows Media Player 10 (and all my other file players) is really failing on files that I know have video like some television shows that I've downloaded. I'm pretty sure I have all the latest codecs.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Is it something I need to fix in the Control Panel?

    (I use Windows XP)

    [EDIT:]
These files worked in the past. Something has changed recently.
I was hoping you guys might have some ideas what it was.

  15. Trying to find resources for learning - web site building

    Date: 06/28/05     Keywords: web, google

    Hello,

I'm making a web site for my school over the summer, and I would like my users to be able to update their pages themselves, without having to resort to FTPing. Most of the teachers are even worse off than I am in computer knowledge, so what I'm looking for is a way for them to log in, enter what they want to show up in a field, and then submit.

I've spent today trying to find what I should be looking for, if you get my meaning, but have had no luck. I simply don't have enough knowledge to know what I should be typing into Google. I would be immensely greatful if anyone here knows of any resources online for learning how to accomplish the above.

  16. External Harddrive question

    Date: 06/27/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have a friend that has a 200g external. It's formatted for PC.
    Seagate, maybe a year old.

Yesterday, while trying to get stuff from me he hooked it up to my mac. It took a while, but the mac recconized it and I was able to transfter stuff to it. Later when I plugged it into my PC (XP Pro, P3) it asked me did I want to format the drive.
I plugged it back into my mac, and the mac said the same thing.

My understanding with the mac/pc interface is that if it was already formatted for PC then it shouldn't have any problems going between platform, that is unless it was not suppose to ever go on a mac.

Is there anyway to recover the files on the hdd or are they lost.

    thanks again

  17. Tracing IP addresses

    Date: 06/26/05     Keywords: no keywords

Is there a program or something out there where I can track an IP address and not just see what city they're in but a closer look - say a street address?

I have this one IP that keeps showing up on a site of mine and I can only tell it's from Brooklyn, but I want to know if it's one pain in the ass ex-friend inperticular so I want to know where this IP is exactly located.

They're using a verizon account if that counts for anything.

  18. formatting

    Date: 06/23/05     Keywords: no keywords

So this is gunna seem really dumb and I should know the answer, but here's the deal; I was trying to format my buddies computer but it wouldn't boot from cd, so I started installing xp from windows thinking it would restart and give me the option to format. But it said I cannot delete the selected partition because there are temporary setup files that are needed, but I can overwrite the windows folder by putting xp on the same partition. So I did that, but alas now there are two OS's on there. How do I delete the old one? And even if I do delete the old one, all the files and stuff are still on the new one, so how do I do a complete format now? I tried hitting f9 during startup to get into bios and change the settings into boot from cd but bios wouldn't come up.

  19. Drive Mapping in Windows XP

    Date: 06/23/05     Keywords: microsoft, google

My client has a brand spanking new XP box that I built, & installed the OS on. I did not install XP in the traditional boot from cd way. Instead I Ghosted from an image server we have here after using an OEM preinstall disk & installing all of the drivers, programs, etc. I know I used the correct image, and all of the drivers & programs were installed correctly. He needs to map a drive so that he can retrieve programs, etc. from it. Unfortunately, when he right clicks on My Computer & selects "Map a Network drive" it does absolutely nothing. No matter which way we try to map the drive, it still won't do anything.

I really am not sure how I can fix this, and can find nothing on Microsoft's knowledgebase or Google that pertains to troubleshooting this kind of problem. Can anyone shed any light on this?

  20. CPU usage

    Date: 06/23/05     Keywords: no keywords

I've recently noticed that my computer has a 100% CPU usage even though I don't have a lot of programs open (only AIM). I think I have enough RAM (512 mb) and I don't know what else it could be. My guess is that AIM takes up a lot of system resources, but a couple of times before, I didn't have AIM running and the computer was still at 100%. Anybody have any ideas? Maybe I should add more RAM like up to 1GB? Thanks.

By the way, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and my computer is a Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz.
