Two Questions
Date: 07/28/05
Keywords: web
I have only two questions.
1. I use Mozzila Firefox and everytime I attempt to access the avidgamers website, I get an error saying "Connection refused when attempting to access avidgamers.com". I was wondering if anyone has an explination to that, and could tell me how to fix it if possible.
2. I'm running a COMPAQ Presario 2246 on a k6 processor and only half the reccomended amount of memory for Windows 2000 (professional). I was wondering what kind of processor I should upgrade to and around how much it would cost for both the processor and some more memory (Believe me, I've seen snails move faster than this machine).

Norton 2005 question
Date: 07/26/05
Keywords: web
Upon startup the internet worm protection says there is an error. After a few minutes the error is gone. I followed the procedure on the symantec website which instructed me to turn off worm protection, restart, turn it back on. This did not seem to fix the problem.
is it really a problem? can it be fixed? Norton has pathetic tech support.

MySQL Test server issues...
Date: 07/26/05
Keywords: php, mysql, html, sql, web, microsoft, google
To anyone here who is familiar with MySQL or can put me on the right path to resolving this:
Windows XP SP2
MySQL Version -- 4.1.13
PHP Version -- 5.0.4
Web Server -- IIS 6.0
Dreamweaver MX 6.1
Frustration Level -- Through the ROOF!!!
PROBLEM: I am unable to connect to my test server through Dreamweaver MX. I was getting the oh so helpful error message: "An unidentified error has occurred." I changed some permissions (I don't know which ones at this moment) and then I was getting the error message "HTML error code 403 forbidden". Now, I'm back to "An unidentified error has occurred." It's got to be a permissions issue but for the life of me I can't figure out which ones. I am also having an issue viewing "http://localhost/" without having to enter a password. I can view other pages on localhost just not the root. I'm sure that has something to do with my test server issue. I have gone through the MySQL manual online and offline. I scoured microsoft.com and msdn for help with the Windows permissions. I have googled all there is to google and I want to google NO MORE. I did find an article reguarding my helpful "An unidentified error has occurred" message (link - technote).
It said to install 6.1 updater for Dreamweaver MX, so I did and no change. I re-ployed the connection scripts and no change. I stopped and restarted the services and nothing. I meticulously inspected all folders that need to be accessible for the server and whatever else needs them, and no dice. I found this technote (Technote), useless. I have pretty much done everything that flipping article said and any other articles that I have found and of course no change.
So there inlays my dilemma. Where do I go from here????

Programming X windows
Date: 07/24/05
Keywords: no keywords
I am trying to teach myself how to write X programs.
To do this I am, quite sensibly, going through a few a few hello world apps to teach myself the basics. I can successfully create a window, but so far all attempts to draw anything to it have met with abject failure.
All I get is a blank white window and nothing else, not even any error messages.
Naturally, I assume this is something I have done, so I tried just compiling and running someone elses code... and get exactly the same result.
Most frustrating!
Any ideas?

Book Rec?
Date: 07/24/05
Keywords: sql, java
Has anyone read/got Head First Design Patterns? What did you think? I'm considering getting it.
I'm not a hard core coder myself right now (I hve been in the past but I was working strictly procedurally, this was before OOP really took off), in my job I just occasionally have to write the odd bit of code, generally to link a couple of existing apps together or to pull some data out of one app and make it ready for loading into another app or a reporting tool. I also sometimes have to talk to developers and think it would be helpful to get more of a grip on what they are talking about. I principally use PL/SQL or C/C++ but lately I've started to learn Java and it looks like I'm going to have to learn Perl and/or Python for a project that's coming up.
Do you think that book would be any use for me? Or should I be looking for something a bit more basic.

Wireless Network Encryption
Date: 07/22/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hey guys, back here for another round of questions.
I have a question on WPA-PSK and with regards with XP SP1. I've/my router and laptop has been using WPA-PSK encyption for about a couple of months now, and I'm quite a happy customer so far...
...then came my sister and her laptop...
See, there are a couple of things wrong with this picture. My sister likes to be online, but as of yesterday, only my laptop was internet enable. So, today, I went to the local W-mart, and picked up a matching PCMCIA card for my sis' laptop, and proceeded to tinker around the particulars.
Unfortunately, she is still using SP1 (and some of you, the readers, might appluad her for it). Now, after hours of countless tinkering, Her laptop couldnt seem to handle WPA encryption. I gave up and just switched the entire damn network to WEP 128-bit.
Everything meshes together now, which brings me to my question.
I found out that my SP2 machine handled WPA pretty good, while her system was refused time and time again when the encryption keys cycled. Is this a known issue in concern to SP1? Is there a way around this, while still retaining WPA-PSK protection? Am I missing something on the bleeding obvious.
Oh, if i forget to mention, both router and pc card are Belkin Wireless B/G made, and both can support most standard encryption, including WPA-PSK encryption. I can't seem to find the model number for either devices, because the boxes have been put away, but if needed, I'll post them ASAP.
Thanks for all help given, in advance.

Portable HDD problem.
Date: 07/22/05
Keywords: no keywords
I am borrowing a friends Samsung portable hard drive and when I plug it into my computer the add remove hardware icon shows up down by the clock same as when I am using my thumbdrive and the drive with the correct model number and everything shows up in the device manager but when I go into my computer I can't see it or access the drive letter that it would become. So far I have tried,
uninstalling/reinstalling the plug and play drivers.
Restarting
windows update
checked all of the cables (the computer knows that it is there, I just cant access it)
I know the harddrive itself is fine because it was just used the day before I borrowed it.
I have looked in computer management under disk management, but I don't know much about the different settings in there. Is there anything in disk management that that I should look at?
Any other ideas?

Server 2003 Reference Book needed
Date: 07/21/05
Keywords: microsoft
Does anyone have a Server 2003 book on their desk right now that is worthy of a recommendation?
I've narrowed down what I think would be good to 3 choices:
1. Group Policy, Profiles, and Intellimirror for Windows 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 - Jeremy Mmoskowitz
2. Microsoft Windows Server 2003: Administrator's Pocket Consultant - William R. Stanek
3. Mastering Windows Server 2003 - Mark Minasi
Mmoskowitz's book looks really interesting so I think I'll get it regardless of anything else but I still would like a good overall book about Server 2003.
P.S. I am interested in administration not implementation.

Anyone happen to be selling their old Abit KX7-333R motherboard? My north bridge burned up on my old one and i don't want to go through the hassle of selling my CPU / RAM that came with it... it's discontinued (of course), and the only models i can find online are not the RAID versions (333 without the R)... if you know someone who has one or have one you're willing to part with let me know! i've got paypal and all that jazz

P.S. there's a guy on ebay selling it for 200 bucks plus 35 for S&H... i offered him 20 bucks... ;)

A Better Education?
Date: 07/21/05
Keywords: programming
First post. *wave*
I'm currently a student at University of Alaska, Anchorage and I'm disappointed at what they are offering for the CS major. I'm trying to get a transfer to somewhere near Colorado (more specifically, Denver). I was wondering what opportunities are there, and which are the better ones.
Cost is an issue, which is why I've considered ITT Tech. However I hear they specialize way too much and I only know that I'm going to try to go into programming (pretty precise, for a freshman ;). I've also heard from a friend that NMIT is really good, but it's pretty far off course from my desired locale.
Any suggestions?

Best NAS?
Around 250G will do. I want it to be USB2.0 as well so I can detach it and use it with my laptops while traveling. Attached print server would be interesting, but the reviews of the BuffaloTech LinkStations's print server makes me wonder if that's even worth it.
So far I'm headed for a LinkStation, since it works well with the LinkTheater if I get one.
Thanks

Lame Nerd Question
Date: 07/20/05
Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, linux, hosting, apache
Here's what's happening:
My company seems to be dragging its feet on upgrading the Solaris server on which I'm supposed to be running this website I'm developing. I've been hosting on my own external server, and when this summer internship is over, I have to move everything over regardless of whether or not the server is ready.
Consequently, people in my department are trying to hunt down an extra Unix box for me to use as a pseudo-server until the real server is (finally) upgraded.
So here's my question:
I've only touched Unix very remotely, as in using an SSH command-line console with my school's web server. I'm a little familiar with basic Linux commands, but that's about it. How difficult would it be for someone like me (who only uses Linux when she has to for classes) to install Apache, PHP, and MySQL...as well as migrate over my existing website (currently running on a Red Hat 9 server with Apache, PHP 4.x, and MySQL 3.2.3 or something similar)?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Ugh. Exam S.O.S.
Date: 07/20/05
Keywords: xml, web
I apologize in advance is this isn't allowed here...not real sure where to post about it, and if you can think of somewhere better, please let me know.
This is related to Office 2003, more specifically Excel, and even more specifically, the certification test at Expert level provided by Certiport.
I took the exam today, and found errors. Two of them that I'm sure of. The exam administrator went back and saw that they were there.
The errors were like this:
The first one was basicialy "Use the data in these cells and create a list". Okay, I know how to do that. Highlight the cells/columns whatever, and go up to Data, List, Create List. Problem here was....there was no List option under Data. I hope I'm not being too vague.
The second problem I ran into involved XML. I was asked to import XML maps and map XML fields to certain cells, yadda yadda. Went up to Data again in the menu, and there was no XML option. At a loss again as to what to do. Task pane didn't work. I had no idea what to do.
The test administrator called Certiport, and Certiport basically told him, "Yeah those are some of our hardest questions so obviously you read them wrong or there's another way to go about answering the problem."
Uh...yeah. We were told to file a complaint on their web site, which of course, we'll do. We paid $75 for the test.
I should mention that my boyfriend is a Master Instructor for Office....he's at a loss, too.
I guess my questions are these...
- Has anyone here taken this exam or had a problem like this with any other MS cert exam?
- In either of the situations I laid out up there, do you know of a way to perform either of those tasks in a way other than the standard menu way? Again, I hope I'm not being too vage.
I appreciate the help in advance, and if this should be posted somewhere else, please let me know!

Buying A New Monitor
Date: 07/17/05
Keywords: no keywords
I'm currently in the market for a new CRT monitor. I'm not looking to buy an LCD because I mostly use my computer for gaming and don't want to have to deal with a native resolution.
I like to run Windows XP at a high resolution, however. Right now, I've got an NEC MultiSync XV15 (yes, it is quite old) and it runs pretty nicely set at 1152 x 864 @ 70Hz. However, whenever I play certain games that don't run in 1152x864, the whole screen is shifted off to the side, so i have to mess with the physical controls on the monitor itself to get everything centered properly.
Obviously this is unacceptable.
So I am looking for a monitor that will run nicely at 1280 x 1024 @ 70Hz. I don't care if it is flat screen or not, but it does have to be CRT. I am hoping to not have to spend too much for one - maybe $100 - $150 at the most.
Is there any hope? Do any of you have any recommendations? Right now, I am looking at this one and this one, but i am unsure whether the 66Hz refresh rate will be sufficient. My current monitor looks like ass at 60Hz and has no setting between 60 - 70 for me to test.
Any help would be much appreciated.
