Networking using 2 Routers?
Date: 06/05/05
Keywords: no keywords
Alright, so I have a question. Snagged a router the other day for $5 from a dude who had no clue what it was (I should feel bad but, alas I do not hehehe). I already have myself a good wireless router so I thought
'Hey! maybe I can use this to put internet in my theater room! Keen gear!'
Is this possible? I am not as good as I would like to be with wireless networking, hence this post. Yes, both routers do wifi.

Help with Dell error codes, and troubleshooting
Date: 06/05/05
Keywords: google
For anybody with Dell motherboard diagnostic light knowledge:
Short and sweet story on my Dell, After lightning storm, the computer would turn on, but would not perform a POST on the system, and thus wouldnt boot my system. I noted the following diagnostic light code, and pulled my hard drives of the machine so hopefully they wouldn't be damaged anymore than they have
A-green
B-yellow
C-grn
D-grn
I've been in the Dell knowledge base, and it made no mention on what that code meant. I did a couple of googles, but I didnt see anything relating to the above code.
To note, the night before I lost the PC, the system rebooted, and BIOS gave me a "missing primary partition error" (or something to that effect, I was groggy and couldn't read the lines straight, nor remember them clearly if I did read them correctly) It gave me the option to continue hitting f1, did so, and the computer booted normaly.
And to that note too, I switched out hard drives, just to make sure it's not attributed to a fried disk, still no post (if you really think about it, a fried hard drive shouldnt really interfer with starting of the post test, unless that my prior training was wrong...)
I'm not a complete pc guru, nor am I an idiot. I don't care that some of the readers like or hate Dell. For right now this is my primary system, and I am basically broke, so please no caustic comments or responses. Let me just ask my question, and hopefully someone with greater resources could help me.
Thanks for any assistants given.

I need a new computer.

I need a new desktop, perferably once I can customize. I currently am using a Toshiba Satellite 65A (Laptop) I was wondering where's the best place to buy PCs online. I plan using it for non-graphic intense games (like Dota) and photomanipulation. I was considering ibuypower.com. Anyone know if they're good? iBuypower aside, anyone know of any really good models?
Considering I'm in college, cheap = good.
Thanks Everyone :D

Problems Installing New Fonts
Date: 06/03/05
Keywords: virus, spyware
The other day I downloaded some new fonts to use in the business card I am creating, but when I went to install the fonts in the Fonts folder in my Control Panel it wouldn't let me. What I mean is, normally I would open up Control Panel > Fonts > File >Install New Font, but the option to install wasn't there. I tried just dropping the fonts in the folder, but that didn't work either.
Does anyone have any idea as to what might be going on and how to fix it? Perhaps a virus? I ran my AVG Anti-Virus and came up with nothing though, so I'm not sure if that's it. I also ran my Scan Spyware just to be on the safe side and still nothing. Any ideas? I'm using Windows 98 by the way.
Thanks in advance.

IMAPI
Date: 06/02/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hey guys... Ive found something that may help me with my CD burning problems. It has something to do with something called IMAPI.
If you do the following:
Click Run>MSCONFIG>SERVICES
there should be a box that says "IMAPI CD BURNING COM SERVICE" that should be listed as RUNNING. Mine says STOPPED. Is there way to go in and change it?
I have never gone into that area of MSCONFIG before.
I wish I could remember the site I found that on, but don't remember :(
If it makes a difference, I am using XP HOME.
Thanks and sorry for all the posts about this issue.

Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000

Well It's way beyond the price range I previously suggested, but I think I've found my gadget. The Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000. I've been looking and loving what features it has. I think I'd be better off with the c1000 (lacking the 4g microdrive) because I dont think I would use that much space, and besides I can just add a cf card. So what do you think?

Gadget Ideas

Keywords: web
So lately I've been boring myself looking for some new handheld gadget
to mess with. I've looked at the HP Jornadas and NEC Mobilepro
handhelds, but feel they're just too outdated to be any fun. I'm
looking for some small device that at least has WiFi for web browsing,
and maybe a keyboard or support for one. Also I would like to
keep my price range close to $100. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I believe this is possible, and I have a client that for various reasons needs this.
How do i got about doing this for win2k or 2k3? What firewall ports are involved?
And yes, I am fully aware of the security problems with this ;)

termio.h
Date: 05/26/05
Keywords: web
Hi,
been up all night trying to install an app for some uni work called YAKS (Yet Another Kephera Simulator)...
My problem is make - in the makefile it looks for the termio.h file and that just fucks everything up 'cos termio.h has been made obsolete by Apple ages ago. I looked on the Apple website and it said that it had been replaced by a termios.h file, but I can't find any such file.
Any ideas on how to work around this?
I'm also having some problems with variadic macros, but have found a temporary workaround re. this, although if anyone else have experienced problems with these VA_ARGS during make then any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Will be x-posted to several other mac/unix related journals, I apologise for this, but I don't really know where the right place for this question is.
Thank you in advance.

Hi everyone.
Does anyone know where I could find a trial version of Norton Utilities (for Windows)? I need it so I can complete a comparison exercise.
If anyone can provide an active working link to download the file from, I will be very thankful. I am having no luck with Google. :(
Cheers,

Programming language?
Date: 05/22/05
Keywords: programming, java, web
I'm interested in learning a programming language, and have been recommended to start with everything from Visual BASIC to Java to even just jumping right into C++. What I want to do is write a program where I can inpute information taken from the NASA website regarding star coordinates, velocities, etc., and be able to enter the information into the program and have the program compute the necessary calculations to yield the result that I want (rather than having to do the calculations by hand). What progamming language would you suggest for such a task as this?

Fileserver question..
Date: 05/21/05
Keywords: software, web, linux
has anyone had any experience with building raid-based file servers in linux?
I'm building one over the summer for my new student house next year, to provide storage for music, films, software etc.
I need at least 500gb of storage, preferably more, with some sort of redundancy. I have an old P2-500 with 128mb of ram sitting about, would this be adequate for about 6 users?
I was thinking of going down the RAID-5 path, as it provides redundancy, and a good ratio of disks to storage capacity.
I'm considering a software-based raid controller card such as this as they are much cheaper than a hardware-based raid card such as this.
Obviously the hardware based card would be faster, but I'm not so bothered about that, I'm more concerned with driver stability and compatability with my os of choice(gentoo)
Also, I assume I would have to run samba on this server to provide access for the llama's im living with next year who run windows.
Has anyone got any tips on securing samba, as I have heard it is fairly insecure, I could block internet access from the firewall, but I would like to run a web server on this box as well, would this be advisable, or would you advise running the web server on a seperate machine?
