1. Linux not working

    Date: 06/22/05     Keywords: linux, spam

I tried to install Mandriva 10.2/Mandrake 10.1 (tested them both) on my desktop computer. Specs: 2x SATA 160gb and raid0 VIA raid controller. It would install just fine, but when I tried to boot I just get a spam of L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 ....anyidea what is wrong? I installed it like 3 times..same thing. If I use just one sata drive it boots, but it's very buggy, slow, programs wont open etc. I would really want to use linux. But I always have to install XP :(. Is it so that Linux doesn't work on raid0? Would sound a little weird to me.

  2. Hardware

    Date: 06/21/05     Keywords: no keywords

While I need a bunch of things for my pc, right now I am having storage issues.
    I am running xp pro.
    Currently there are 3 hdd's (40, 60, 80)
The 40 and the 80 are in the pc right now, while the 60 is visiting a friend. I am looking to (at some point) turn the 40 into a external hdd, but since that is already in a pc, I will be using the 60.
I am looking for enclousers that are resonably inexpensive and can cross platform (mac to pc) with out issue. I found this one on New Egg The Rosewell and it has received good reviews and pretty cheap.
Now my question is, someone mentioned in the reviews that you needed to format it so the computer recconginzes the hdd not just the enclouser. If I purchased this, and formated it, would I loose all the information on the hdd?
    Thank you.

Also, (I am pretty green to hardware) physically, what is the difference between a ATA and STA haddrive. I know I have the older version (two connections to the hdd) but I want to make sure I am getting the correct hardware.

    Thanks again

  6. Good Deals, or No?

    Date: 06/16/05     Keywords: no keywords

I emailed the guy who does all my computer fixing and installing for me and asked him if there was something(s) he could install to make it so that I could transfer VCR taped stuff onto a DVD using my computer.

He told me I need a Video Capture Card and a DVD+RW. He mentioned the VCC would be ABOUT $125 and the DVD+RW runs ABOUT $160.

Does this seem priced about right? Too high? Too low?

    Thanks.

  7. Linksys WAP

    Date: 06/15/05     Keywords: no keywords

Something has happened to my WAP54G (linksys wireless router). It allows me to connect all four computers to the internet, but for some reason is not allowing all traffic through it.

For instance, it is stopping all traffic over ports 2109 and 6994 (City of Heroes ports). If I connect my computer directly to the cable modem, it works fine.

Since it is a WAP and not a router all ports are open. I even closed my firewalls (ZoneAlarm Pro and the Windows XP firewall) and still have the same issue.

Has anyone else had a similar problem and now how to fix it?

  8. Generic Host Process Error.

    Date: 06/15/05     Keywords: microsoft

    Hi there.

Lately, my precious Fred (laptop running at Centrino 1.5, 256MB of RAM) has been starting up with Windows XP wanting to send out an error report for a Generic Host Process Win32 error. I've been ignoring it for a while, & this morning, I just got too tired of it & sent the error report. It turns out there's some bug in Service Pack 2, & there's this hotfix which could fix the darned thing.

But, I don't know anything about this update. Is it okay, or should I wait until the next SP release? It's not doing anything wrong to my PC, really, since the error, according to Microsoft, happens during the shut down process. I just want to know if anyone has been experiencing the same thing & what are the steps you took. Or, what would be the best action: download the hotfix or just ignore the problem?

    Thanks for your time! :)

  9. be your own isp

    Date: 06/15/05     Keywords: google

I have a question. Recently I was thinking that it would be quite cool if I could become my own ISP. I would like to be able to set up a dial-up server and allow my parents and some friends to use me as their ISP. Presently I have 6mps+ up and down and I do not need all of that all of the time. Thus I was thinking tha ti could use an old box to serve out sme of that to them. I have several questions
    1. would my ISP and my phone company kill me for this. I will not be receiving any renumeration for this but I am simply giving them free dial-up
    2. where could I find information on doing this?
    3. Is this like setting up a VPN?
    4. What would I need to do this successfully?

I am throughly courious and I would love to be able to do this legally and feel free to point me in the right direction on google or where ever

  10. Active Directory Backup / Restore

    Date: 06/15/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have a project coming up tommorow where I would like to backup and restore the Active Directory user accounts on a server.

The server badly needs a format, and I would prefer to avoid the need to readd every PC to the domain (due to lost SSID's). So I am interested in performing the afforementioned backup.

Is this procedure as simple as the help files explain it? I ran the backup, that wasn't a problem (using backup wizard to just backup the system state). But I am curious about the restore. Do I simply format, reinstall win2k server and then use the backup wizard to restore the old system state?

  11. XP + USB2 = headache

    Date: 06/13/05     Keywords: linux, google

    Hi folks,

I am having a problem with XP and USB2... basically, whenever i plug anything into a USB2 port I get a BSOD, but USB1 is fine. I thought maybe it was the windows halflife problem so I have tried it again with a fresh install.

If I have a completely clean system, ie installed off the disk with no service packs installed USB2 works fine, but as soon as I patch up to date (sp2 + all the other patches) the problem comes back.

It works on a fresh install so I don't think its a hardware fault... I'm guessing it must be one patch somewhere along the line that kills USB2. I have searched the knowledgebase and googled for the problem but i'm not really coming up with any leads... any ideas (other than to get rid of windows and install linux on the box - which is almost a possibility since I dont play games anymore)?

I can't recall whether i may have asked about this before, so forgive me if i'm repeating myself... :)

    FDD

And it doesn't boot. Fans spin up, cd rom and fdd lights flicker (searching for boot device?) but no system beeps and NO VIDEO. Tried swapping ram, nope. Tried different video cards: nothing. I'm having NO idea what's wrong. Asus Web site is here, but good luck getting it to load quickly.

ANY help at all is greatly appreciated.

  14. Bittorrent vs IM clients?

    Date: 06/10/05     Keywords: linux

I don't know if it's just Azureus, or any Bittorrent client, but every time I open Azureus, it causes everyone on my local LAN to have sporadic random IM dropouts, on both AIM and MSN, on both the official clients and Gaim. I thought it was because it was saturating my connection in one direction or the other, but I've limited both upload and download speed (including, as an experiment, to some very small numbers) and it seems to be no different. When I exit Azureus, the problems go away.

Anybody have any experience/suggestions? I guess one answer is to limit my quite serious Linux distro collection, but I'd like some other answer. Maybe there's a "screw everything up" option in Azureus that I've accidentally toggled...?

  15. Wireless woes

    Date: 06/09/05     Keywords: linux

Per my boss' orders I am trying to install a wireless access system and have it use Radius
Authentication via windows 2003 server IAS service. I have Radius setup for
users that dial into our network and it works fine.
    However, the wireless
stuff requires a parameter called a LAT-group, which I can configure in IAS, to
determine access rights via wireless. BUT, the wireless, for some strange reason,
when I put a sniffer on the network traffic is waiting for type of reply from
the radius server, but I can't tell with the sniffer what the heck it is waiting
    for.
SO, I ended ditching that and loading a server with Fedora Core 3 Linux and
installed Free Radius on it. It fails the authentication, and the user name/passwd/Lat group
is in the radius conf file, By this time it was 0130 am and I went home and
crashed and I am back here at it again. Anyone around here experienced setting up a
wireless system using Radius? Any hints???

  16. A question about drive enclosures

    Date: 06/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

A quick question about External hard drive enclosures, and it's a pretty basic one, so excuse the n00bness.

I have an existing HDD, in NTFS and filled with goodies. Can I just slap this puppy in any enclosure, and have Win XP just recognize the drive and access the data within?

I know, pretty generic question, with lots of X and Y factors. This question is primarily aimed at the people who have experience in this field. Seeing that I'm pretty dead broke, I can't afford plopping 30ish bucks for something that might rendering my sweet drive empty, or pretty useless.

  17. XP SP 2

    Date: 06/09/05     Keywords: software, security

I uninstalled WinXP Service Pack 2 yesterday, because it was cheaper than buying more RAM (256MB seems to be too little?), and now the whole system runs much faster (ie I no longer have to log on and then go and put the kettle on while I wait for everything to boot up), which was the desired effect.
But am I missing anything MAJOR by not having SP2? The only noticeable differences were the Security Centre (but I use Norton anyway) and the Bluetooth software (but I already had Bluetooth software installed). Oh and the 'Set Program Access Defaults' option has disappeared from the Star Menu, but I can live without that

    Any thoughts?

    Date: 06/08/05     Keywords: rss

Hello, I am interested in getting an RSS newsreader, but I am looking for one with a scrolling bar which would be able to be placed on the top or bottom of my screen (if anyone knows what Winbar is, think of something like that). So far all I have found is newsreaders which come in window format, but which don't have a bar feature (like a stock ticker). If anyone knows of something like this, I would like to know (preferably open source).
