concern in video card overheating..
Date: 05/20/05
Keywords: web
i recently bought an XFX geforce 6600GT, and it worked great for a month..until the other day, i installed a new hard drive...booted up, everything is fine. i go to play guild wars, then it freezes almost instantaneously to the point where i have to do a cold reboot, i try again, still the same problem...i open up the case side, touch the card, and YOUCH enough to fry an egg....i check the temperature.....96c.....i look at the card closer, and realize that the hs fan is not spinning at all...i take the bugger apart and see the wire was actually stripping, and perhaps shorting against the heatsink....so i go out and buy a new heat sink and fan....i still have the same problem! i figure it has to with some internal traces...which makes me believe i knocked it while installing that hdd. i send the card back, get a refund.....
i pick up an x800 XL today....install, works like a beauty.....which leads to my question or advice from others..
when i play any game i feel it getting pretty hot to....i know my hs fan is working and all that for sure..
but the questions:
1. is what i'm feeling on this x800 normal?? i've used nvida gpus all my life.
2. if it sounds fishy, could i have some how damage some traces on my agp slot and should i get everything out ASAP?
please give me some input here....i want to feel safe useing this $300 card. and i really don't.
thanks.
p.s. i searched around the web for an ati temperature monitor...is there one in existance for an x800 XL?? if you know of one, please provide a link.
haha. one more thing. can anyone recommend to me a good driver set i should use??? apparantly, my cs:s stress test only comes in at 85fps...and i feel i should get higher than that with this machine....
specs:
amd athlon xp barton core 2500+ OCed to 2.2GHZ
1.25 GB of generic pc2700 RAM
ATI x800 XL 256MB AGP
ASUS A7N6X-E MOBO
sorry about the rambling, hopefully someone read this ! =)

Laptop help.
Date: 05/18/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi there! A few months ago my boyfriend's laptop stopped picking up outlet power. We purchased a new power supply thinking that may help. In short, it didn't. We figured the laptop was just old and moved on. I brought my laptop here from home and now it has the same problem. It stopped picking up outlet power but when I jiggle it in the connector, it picks it up for a few seconds. Sometimes, I can prop it in such a way that it can stay on outlet power. Is this just a problem with the connector? If so, how much would it cost to get something like that replaced? My connector looks okay, but the one on my boyfriend's laptop did seem slightly loose. I should also mention that when the laptop runs off of battery power now, it is much slower than when it is hooked up to outlet power. Also, the screen dims significantly. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Server question
Date: 05/18/05
Keywords: no keywords
This just came up at work. Why are servers (and other rack mounted equipmnent) measured in U and why is 1U 1.75 inches?
Obviously there has to be some sort of standardised measure, but why 1.75 inches? Why not 2 inches or 5cm or 1 hand? And why are racks 19 inches wide? Why not 20inches?

I decided to go hawg wild, and price up a dream PC, real money-no-object stuff. The total cost is a hair over $7,500 but it seems to be worth every single penny.
Super Micro SC742T-550 EATX case (7 hot-swap SATA bays, 3 5.25" bays, 1 3.5" bay, 550W PSU)
Tyan Thunder K8W EATX Motherboard (Dual Opteron, 1 AGP 8x, 4 PCI-X, 1 PCI, ATA-133, SATA-150, GbE)
Dual AMD Opteron 252
8GB Corsair PC3200 DDR DIMM Memory
Five x Seagate Barracuda ST3400832AS 400GB 7.2Krpm Hard Drive (in RAID 5, effective storage 1.6TB)
Two x Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10Krpm Hard Drive (in RAID 1.5, effective storage 74GB)
3ware Escalade 9500S-8 (8-port PCI-X SATA RAID Controller)
Optorite DD1603 Double Layer DVD+/-RW Writer
Sony 3.5in 2HD Floppy Drive
SIIG 9-in-1 USB 2.0 5.25"/3.5" Bay Card Reader/Writer
eVGA GeForce 6800GT Video Card
NEC Diamond Pro 2070SB-BK 22" CRT Monitor
Logitech Elite Keyboard (Black) USB with PS/2 Adaptor
Razer Diamondback Gaming Mouse
Nostromo SpeedPad N52
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro
Creative Gigaworks S750 7.1 Speaker System
Of course, getting this system is just a simple matter of saving up, so I should be able to get it within about 12 years or so.
Any input or suggestions? Any areas where my research is obviously weak?

PSU Questions
Date: 05/15/05
Keywords: asp
A recent post here has me thinking about power supplies. I have a stock 420 watt PSU. I might want to replace my stock power supply and I have a few questions:
- What are some good brands and model numbers?
- Is there such as thing as a fan-less ATX power supply?
- Does the power supply pull a constant wattage or does it depend on what hardware is in use?
- Is there a way to modify a PSU to make it quieter or give off less heat?
- What is the technical term for the standard PSU power connector?
In upgrading my PSU I'll be breaking my standard "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" credo as my PSU is working fine and seems to power my machine adequately. I've simply run out of things to upgrade at the moment (or rather I'm comfortable with all the other aspects of my PC). :)
Can't stop tinkerin', ya know?

trouble with uploading pics from digital cam

Hi,
I'm hoping somone can help me out here cause this is driving me nuts and I am admittedly computer illiterate...anyways, I'm running windows XP and last night I tried to upload the images on a Canon G3 digital camera I'm using for a school project and the computer wont even detect the camera...I cant figure out why. I plugged it into the USB port and made sure the cables were all tight and all but still nothing...any ideas on how I could get this to work? I've never transfered images before so this is all new to me.

Video out Firewire port (PC)
Date: 05/15/05
Keywords: no keywords
Anyone used Video2DV?
It will play movie out of your firewire port so you can use a transcoder to view it on a TV. Supports Divx, etc.
I'm looking for an alternative, that has a better player....this one seems to lose sync and is a bit buggy.
Any thoughts?

Knowledge Base Software

Keywords: html, java, web, linux, hosting
The company I work for is a Linux web hosting company. And we desperately need a decent knowledge base system. Primarily for internal use, but also so that we can provide direct links back to the KB for customers to read to help us streamline our help desk responses.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I've been looking into Twiki, but that requires an enormous amount of setup time. And now I'm looking at FreeMind, but that isn't HTML, its a java applet.

Gentoo, Take 1
Date: 05/13/05
Keywords: linux
So based on everyone's glowing reviews of Gentoo, I decided to try and install it on my test PC here at work. We're considering porting our app over to Linux and I've been given the task of picking a distro to start with (their paying me to learn Linux, sweet or what?). I wimped out a bit and chose the universal Gentoo ISO.
I must say it is really impressive. At least what I was able to get done today. I got the file system set up and was in the process of installing the Stage 3 tarball when I noticed that it was getting HDD media errors (bad sector) pretty regularly. I assume this means the HDD is probably unstable. Is this correct? I plan on hunting down another HDD (we have a few floating around here) and trying again.
As I speak it's still installing, but I'm pretty sure that the HDD is not to be trusted (unless the errors are normal; which is unlikely).
I am really impressed with the handbook. It really does a great job of walking you through the layout of a Linux installation. I feel much more confident in command-line operation (I haven't used command-line since DOS 6.22!) and I'm starting to get the hang of the file structure. I'm certain that a full install will leave me with a fairly deep understanding of what is under the Linux hood.
This makes me wonder: Are there many other distros that do this? I'm aware of Core, but that is about it. Anyone have any experience with Core? What are it's strengths and weaknesses?
I'm really looking forward to getting this working.
Then I have to learn WINE and try to get our app running on it. If I can run it under WINE and maintain stability, we might be able to convince the powers that be to port a native version. Thanks for everyones help and I'm really happy this community exists.

FTP vs SCP
Date: 05/12/05
Keywords: no keywords
Has anybody here noticed a difference between transferring a text file in FTP ASCII mode vs an SCP transfer? What about ASCII vs Binary mode? Have you ever run across an instance where the transfer in any other mode but FTP ASCII caused a problem?
I had to upload a new implimentation of our credit card application interface. In there was 3 perl scripts that were transfered to the cgi-bin directory. I am being told that our problems are due to the fact that I didn't use an ASCII mode FTP transfer.

Hey all, I need your help if possible.
I have an olympus D-370 digital camera. I used to be able to plug it in to my computer and this neat easy thing (scanner and camera wizard) would pop up and put my pictures onto my desktop. Now I cant get it to work.
Instead this little green thingy pops up and I have to go through a few steps. DOes anyone know what I can do to get the scanner and and camera wizard to work again properly? I have XP if that makes any difference.
Thanks.

External hard drive question
Date: 05/11/05
Keywords: google
Okay, I should be able to figure this out. I have googled for an answer, and have followed most of what i thought were valid fixes ie: Install newest driver, uninstall/reinstall, plug into the same USB slot every time, but I still get this
The external runs fine, but it always asks me to install this SCSI Adaptor. It is annoying, that I have to hit cancel and then get this little msg.
Lower right hand corner, but as you see the hard drive is recognized and ready.
Before, when I had this problem, I also had Norton Ghost installed, and this seemed to make my system crash out. Maybe it was ghost, but I had ghost on and all the hardware for the External removed and it ran fine, it just wasnt able to send the image to anything since this is a laptop with only one hard drive.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for your time!

Windows XP re-install

Keywords: no keywords
Okay, I think it's going to have to be this way... I need to fix whatever is wrong with Windows XP so that I can get back into the hard drive. Trouble is, when I had it as a Master Drive, the BIG BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH kept popping up and preventing me from properly opening my OS.
What I want to do is repair the OS without losing critical files (especially OE emails).
What can I do?

Outlook Express email

Keywords: no keywords
Okay, this morning my computer refused to load Windows XP and it drove me crazy. Fortunately, I had a spare Hard Drive and I slaved the old one to it. Now every single email I have received is still there, waiting to be retrieved from the old hard drive, and I know there's a way to do it, but I am totally lost as to how.
If I could just resume using the old hard drive I could just transfer everything over, but the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH keeps me from getting to it. So I'd prefer to transfer it all from the old drive in slave-mode.
Please tell me you have an idea how to retrieve the email in a readable format.

XML?
Date: 05/09/05
Keywords: rss, xml, web
What's the best - and free - way to add XML syndication feeds to a website?
I'm working on my own site right now (unfortunately, I can't make the whole thing live until the DNS changes to my GoDaddy domain go through), and my goal is to have three separate blogs through Blogger.com...and I want to display a feed from the two secondary blogs on my front page (like have a section for a secondary blog, containing links and the first few lines from each article in that blog...). I know I can use FeedBurner to convert my Atom XML feeds to RSS, but either way, how do I make my site display the XML information?
Thanks in advance!
