Save me from the IE >_>
Date: 07/01/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, css
I know floats aren't the cleanest things to use for positioning, but I just find them to be the simplest thing for basic column layouts. The vast majority of the time they behave well, but I've recently noticed that in IE Mac (a.k.a., the browser from hell), this page, this page, and this page both have the problem that the content appears under the nav instead of next to it. All the pages use this stylesheet, but the layout issue only appears on these pages. I don't see how it's the content that's pushing it too wide, especially since all the widths of the divs are defined and making the content wider doesn't help. (and I'm not even going to -try- and get the CSS dropdowns to work correctly in this thing).
I could use some ideas on how to resolve this one issue, and possible suggestions on how to CSS-position in the future. Thanks much.

Quick Question about validating:
Date: 07/04/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, css, html
I'm still very new to the whole validation thing. I always make sure my sites work in both IE and Firefox, but I'm currently trying expand my horizons and build on the basic knowledge I have of html, css, etc.
Anyway, point being. I'm building a site that has a flash movie in it. From what I've read in order to make it work in IE you need the < object ... > and in order for flash to show up in firefox or netscape it needs to also have < embed ...> Now that's all fine and dandy, but it seems that html 4.01 transitional spits it back at me saying embed is no good.
Is there a way around this? Personally I'd rather the flash actually show up in all browsers than having the page validate *L* but it's a little on the irritating side.
---
Edit: On another tangent, I was searching through other flash pages to see if I could find out how they deal with the problem. I went to coolhomepages.com and hit every page in the flash section for the first few pages. Only about 3 of them had a doctype, and out of those none of them validated.
Do people actually worry about validating their pages?

WordPress/Movable Type/CMS's
Date: 07/04/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: cms, php, css, web
Hey all,
I've been brushing up my rusty skills lately while working on a few side project websites. I had a few questions regarding publishing platforms and CMS's. I know a few adopt the technique to style and present via CSS then use a backend management system to manage the content. I see many sites using Movable Type and Wordpress for this and some coding their own CMS's. I'd like to be able to style up the site and structure it however I like, but then have some type of backend to power it all yet be easy to integrate.
- I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for either or perhaps another easy to implement Publishing Platform/CMS to drop into small-medium size web projects? Which one is easier to integrate into a design from scratch and a rich feature set to maintain?
- Another question, anyone know of an open-source equal to something like Basecamp?
*EDIT*
- Reading up on each I've gathered a whole slew of new knowledge. One of the main differences I see now is WordPress' "Template Tags" aren't much more than PHP function calls and Movable Type have a full blown tag system. I am mainly looking at each system now based on their template systems and the template tags ease of use from the stand point of integrating your own desgin into it or creating a site from scratch with it built in. If anyone has switched from one system to the other I would love to hear your thoughts on why and how it worked out for you.
Thanks for any info.

.htpasswd?
Date: 07/06/05
(Web Development) Keywords: css, html, web
I recently stepped in to take over my company Web site. I have a design background and have been learning HTML and CSS over the past couple of months. So far, everything is working out well.
The problem is that I can't figure out how the previous guy did passwords on the site. He is reluctant to give me information (probably one of the reasons he's not working with us anymore), but does hand out tidbits a la Hannibal Lecter at times. Recently, he explained that in order to pass-protect a directory which has an ever-changing list of unique users (different login/passes), I have to access the .htpasswd file via Telnet and replace it with a tab deliminated .txt file (first portion is login; second portion is pass). Or something. I can write out the exact process if that helps. I don't have Telnet and am barely able to muddle around in Terminal on OS X.
So I have no idea what he's talking about, or where to go to find a tutorial on it. I'm not sure where .htpasswd is stored on the site -- is there a default location? I'm thinking about replacing the existing method via .htaccess (I've read how to do this) but without knowing the existing method, I don't know how much I'll muck things up.
Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Any advice or direction at all would be most appreciated! I will be happy to clarify; I know this is probably quite vague.

I am building a site with a shopping cart displaying on each page and I would like to have rows of a table as links to the items. There will be columns showing qty, item number and price. As a tr or table are not supposed to be enclosed in an a tag; should I make the cells spans and format them as table cells through CSS? I was trying out a new LJ client, sorry about the mess

hello. i'm new here. kind of new with webdesign as well (been doing it for almost a year just as a hobby; mostly with css and html).
1. i'm just curious as to how many of you actually have made webdesign/programming your career, and if so, what route did you take in college (certificate, associates, bachelors, etc). i'm a second year community college student, and i'm interested in persuing webdesign as a career, technical side and design side, so i guess im just confused as to what i should do in school to get where i'm wanting to be (job as a webdesigner for a company). any tips, suggestions?
2.also, i'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but in the userinfo, " Affordable & Reliable Webhosts" was left blank. so i'm going to ask you guys for some reccomendations on hosts. ive done godaddy, and 1and1.com before.. and neither have what i want for a low enough price. i'm looking for something that will allow me to have multiple ftp accounts, php, a decent amount of bandwidth, multiple domain hosting, etc. any suggestions?
3. last but not least, i'm looking into using moveable type as a blog for my website. i would like to achieve something like this. does anyone have any experience with this? is it fairly easy? is there something better i should be using. as you can tell, i'm kind of a beginner, and i would love if you would point me in the right direction if i'm missing out on something better.
any help would be awesome. thanks!

Small but annoying problem
Date: 07/13/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, css
So this is a small detail, but it's driving me absolutely insane.
On my page, I have two separate CSS link styles, one for the navigation bar and one for content. Everything works exactly how it's supposed to, except for one link--the one for "Message Board." After I click on it, the hover color no longer shows up; it just stays the same, unless I reset my browser, and then the hover will work until I click on that link again. What's more infuriating is that this is the only link that does this.
My page is here. I'd appreciate any help, because this is driving me nuts.

CSS help plz
Date: 07/13/05
(Web Development) Keywords: php, browser, css, database, web
This is driving me crazy. Any help would be much, much appreciated.
I'm redoing the site template for this intranet website I'm designing - the Dreamweaver template I'd made using tables is completely, inexplicably fubar on certain pages of the site. I got sick of messing with it and told my boss I was going to make an all-new, CSS-based layout, and that was that. He agreed to let me do so.
Everything's been going fine...I've been doing my primary testing in FireFox, but I've been doing testing in IE6 (mostly because that's what almost everyone in this department is likely to use), as well as minimal viewing in Opera 8 and Netscape 7.
Suddenly, things broke. Now I have part of the content text repeated below my footer text. See link here:
http://www.shifuimam.com/php_tutorials/database_trial/drfe/template.php
I've discovered that if I remove the "float: left" property of the lefthand area of the site in my CSS, it fixes it. However (of course), removing that element completely throws the site layout out of whack. I'm about to do absolute positioning of all the elements and throw this template out the window.
I beseech you, please, please help me.
Oh, and while I'm at it...I want the gray lefthand column to extend to the bottom of the browser window, regardless of the length of the content. In all browsers, setting the "length" property to "100%" makes it too long, because there's stuff ABOVE that navigation bar. Any ideas?

Hey guys/gals.
I need to learn about CSS. I really really need to. I have a little pocket-reference guide to CSS, but it does little in terms of teaching a newbie.
This is an outcry to the masses. Can anyone provide me with a site with good CSS tutorials? I want to learn all I can. I want to make sites without tables. I really do! :)
Any response is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

DHTML, Browsers, and Other Foul Beasts
Date: 07/17/05
(Web Development) Keywords: browser, css
I'm working on this kind of pet AJAX project, and I have it working, by and large, except it sucks on IE, and Safari, and otherwise has not been tested on any non-Mozilla/Netscape browsers. If you have Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape/Camino, take a look at it to see what it should do. Contrast this to the behavior in [browser name here]. The Safari behavior is weird because it just seems to be mis-rendering it. By contrast, I just have no clue what IE is doing with regard to positioning the dropdowns. Whereas Moz/NS browsers position the dropdown relative to the bottom left corner of the parent span, IE seems to be positioning it relative to the top and some imaginary point a fixed width away on the right, even if the span is not that wide.
I need CSS ninjas to tell me what the hell is up.

Someone said that he works around DMX's crap. So, does anyone mind warning me about DMX's crap and any other useful information about the application to a beginner in using HTML editors? I sorta know HTML and CSS, I swear I do, I just hate using HTML editors. I prefer manual coding. -_-
Oh, and how can Netscape NOT support table border colors? What's up with that?!

Okay. In my quest to learn how to build a page by using css instead of tables I've run into a bit of a snag.
The page
The css
Problem would that when viewing in firefox the tops of the 2 containers don't line up, even though the top margins are both set at 10px. Plus the left margin doesn't really look like it's 10px either.

Everyone, check this out

(WebDesign) Keywords: css, html, asp, web
Due to the recent events which transpired in a recent post of mine (which I'm sure you've all read through by now), and also the recent outcry for or against usability, table-less css sites, and everyone aspiring for perfectly valid HTML sites... I've decided to post this link I found last night. I think its worth a look. Please don't think I'm anti-usability, pro-tables, and pro-crappy HTML. My point is that people harp and harp on these issues way more than they should... IMHO.
Quotes:
"Mystical belief in the power of Web Standards, Usability, and tableless CSS"
"Remember, nobody gets excited about the tools used to build a house ("Please tell me what brand of hammers you used!"). People get excited about how the house looks and performs."
"I learned quickly that business executives didn't care about usability testing or information design"
"There seems to be a cult belief that if we use Web Standards, usability, and tableless CSS, our web sites will make money, we'll be famous (or at least cool), and our sites will look great. It isn't that easy."

the power of Furl
Date: 07/22/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: browser, css, web
I'd like to go over a new site content management system I've developed with the help of Furl
A bit of explanation of what Furl is and how it works Furl is a server-side bookmark manager, similiar to that of del.icio.us or any other number of similar tools. These sites work by assigning you a bookmarklet that you place in your browser toolbar. In the example of Furl, everytime you come across a site which you find interesting and would normally bookmark via your browser's bookmarking function, you instead click on the Furl bookmarklet. You are then taken to an area of the Furl website which saves the interesting website you wanted to bookmark on the Furl server. To access all of these "furled" sites you've saved, you just need to go to furl.net and log in with your username and password. You will be taken to your ever expanding archive of websites that you've furled. I've been using Furl for a while now and have 572 things saved at the moment. One other thing to mention is that during the setup of your Furl account, you can select options to have your list of furled websites be viewable by other members of furl, which I will touch on later.
Now for the cool things you can do with Furl When furling websites, you can organize everything by topic. So far, I mainly use two topics: default and useful. You can add new topics on the fly as well.
On unhappymeal.net you are basically looking at the topics I mentioned earlier. The Furl website has instructions for adding code to your own website which will generate a list of your furled items. You just specify which topics you would like to display, formatting such as date and comments, and how many items are displayed at once. Furl spits out the code you will need, and you can just paste it into the code of your website. You can even use CSS to style the formatting of the furled items.
I've made topics such as "halloween" and "easter" as well, which are not displayed on unhappymeal.net at the moment, but with only a few code changes I can display them at the right time of the year.
I find that creating a website with my furled items to be far more satisfying than if I had just made my furled items public. You would have to look at the list of websites I've furled on the furl website itself along with it's own formatting otherwise. I guess it's partially about control, and partially that I'm constantly finding new stuff at a rate which would warrant a website to display all the content.

One Stop Resource
Date: 07/23/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: css, html, asp, web
Alright, new idea.
Since It's come to my attention that I need a great deal more knowledge in web-based "things" than I thought, I'm starting this. I assume lots others are in my boat. I sit here and make sites trying to be as artistic and creative as possible. Unfortunatly for me, I know nothing of accessability, table-less design, valid-HTML techniques, or anything like that. On the "technical" end of things, I'm quite the newbie. All I know is HTML, a SMALL amount of CSS, ASP with dreamweaver's help, and uhh... thats it pretty much. I'm totally in the dark when It comes to making sites without dreamweaver, flash, and fireworks... and still making the site look appealing.
So here's my idea. I need resources teaching me how to build better sites. I need sites teaching me how to make sites more accessable to disabled viewers, how to get away from poor HTML coding, the best ways to make table-less web sites... I need the works. Like I said before, I assume lots of people are in this boat with me. So I figure that all you experts out there can reply to this thread with some resources you use frequently, and wish to share with me/us, and all the designers out there can bookmark this thread for future use. Get me?
I posted a while back asking about CSS use for table-less sites, and got terrific replies. I still have that bookmarked.
Excuse the lofty request, but I want to learn!
Instead of googling all this, I figure lots of people on this forum can offer great resources... you have before.
Thanks in advance, to anyone who contributes.
:)

CSS problem
Date: 07/23/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: css
I'm currently working on a site and I've discovered this bizarre little bug. I have two css stylesheets that I'm referencing in this page. One is for the main elements and the other style sheet will change the colours of those main elements depending upon the page that you are viewing. Now here is the bizarre thing.
Since many of the same properties are only going to have a colour change I have them all grouped together. Here is an example (and actually the list is a lot longer but I'm just giving you an idea) :
body#products .content_title, body#products .sec_bold, body#products a.side_bar_nav:link { color: #9C2722; }
This works perfect in IE but when I view it in firefox it won't read the colour. Now if I define them all separately it works but that would make my css sheet huge when I think I should be able to combine the properties.
Here is the site that I'm working on.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
