1. Images in reportviewer reports

    Date: 11/24/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: database

    Is there a way to get an image to show on report from an Object source, not database?

    The only way I could organize this now is saving an image in file system and passing a link to the file into the imagebox on report. Any better solutions? Can it accept Image or Bitmap types somehow?

  2. Of Character Encodings

    Date: 11/18/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: database, asp, sql, web

    I am converting a web app from ASP to ASP.net and have stumbled on an annoying problem.

    1. ASP code accepts user input and stores value in the database
    SQL field type is nvarchar(200).
    BUT the query does not use N'' to specify that the string is unicode.

    2. Value stored in the database is '陳小春'

    3. Value displayed on web page (utf8 encoding, no server side changes) is '陳小春'

    4. Actual UTF data in the database is displayed on screen as ???
    (database value: 人, display value: ?)

    5. ASP.net application using the EXACT same queries results in point 4 being displayed correctly (as japanese) but the values that were displayed correctly in the ASP app are now exactly as they are in the database.

    Please Help ... My only guess was that the ADO connection was converting the UTF in the database to Non-UTF for display in ASP and the ADO connection in .Net is preserving the Unicodeness of it.

    But i did a simple test in ASP where i selected the data, stored it in a variable and then inserted back into the database (non using N'')
    and well ... i got the exact same .... japanese was japanese the rest was garbage.

    Anyone have any ideas???

  4. INI handling functions... They were nonexistent as far as I knew...

    Date: 10/11/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web

    This has irked me for some time: The lack of INI handlers in PHP.

    I was moving my website around from host to host, until I settled, and needed a universal standard that I could write on and rely on that would work anywhere as I really wouldn't have a MySQL database everywhere I went. So I wrote this up after not finding a shred of a command for userlevel INI file handling. INI.Lib (Last Built Oct. 3rd, 2004)

    I hope some other people can make some use out of it as well I was able to. If you see any major errors or when you use it you can't for the life of you get past a certain bug, let me know and I will see if this one is any real difference from my current build (Apr. 3rd 2005). I may have just patched up a few commands here and there with my build that I caught in the original code and done a few optimizations. If anyone wants the current build, go ahead and drop me a line to cynagen at cynagen dot com, and I'll be more than happy to send you a copy of the current copy on my server; if enough of you report problems, I'll just repackage my current build and post that instead.

  5. Optimising MySQL

    Date: 06/28/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: mysql, database, sql, google

    I'm working on a site at the moment and I'm trying to optimise the MySQL queries, to place less of a strain on the server and make generally neater code. I'm currently using this technique to pull the last 10 topics flagged as news from the database:

    $query = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_topics t WHERE t.tpc_news = '1' AND t.tpc_news_mod_id > 0 ORDER BY t.tpc_sticky DESC, t.tpc_time DESC LIMIT 10", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

    Then in the loop created by $results = mysql_fetch_array( $query ) using a second query to pull the content of the post:

    $news_sql = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_posts p WHERE p.pst_tpc_id = '".$results[ 'tpc_id' ]."' ORDER BY pst_time ASC LIMIT 1", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

    Now, although this works, it currently uses 11 queries, plus various others I'm using to create each page; so I'm trying to find a neater solution. I've tried some tutorials on sub-queries found on Google, to no avail. The following works if there's only one news topic but falls over if there's more:

    $query = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_posts p, frm_topics t WHERE p.pst_tpc_id = ( SELECT tpc_id FROM frm_topics t WHERE t.tpc_news = '1' AND t.tpc_news_mod_id > 0 ORDER BY t.tpc_sticky DESC, t.tpc_time DESC LIMIT 10 ) AND t.tpc_id = p.pst_tpc_id ORDER BY p.pst_time ASC LIMIT 1", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

    I'd really appreciate it if anyone could lend a hand or point me in the right direction.

  6. PHP (& Smarty) mentor needed for SourceForge project

    Date: 06/16/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, software, database, web

    Hi PHP community members!

    Awhile back, I started a SourceForge project with the goal of using it as a tool to better learn PHP & Smarty. I'm a CS graduate with experience working in C/C++, Perl, and especially ColdFusion (due to work), and I've decided that it's a good idea to learn PHP and Smarty, and what better way to do that than with an actual project that might be of some use to someone?

    The problem is that, as a fairly new developer, it's freakin' hard to get a project like this off the ground the right way. I don't know the best practices for laying out the app's directories, where I should put my smarty files, that sort of thing. As a software engineer I understand and will be doing requirements analysis, use cases, the database schema(s), etc, and I understand PHP well, having hacked up some wikis and that sort of thing. It's just difficult to get a project like this off the ground. So, what I'm hoping is that there's one (or more, even) people out there who might be interested in working on a PHP project they can show off to others, and are willing to provide a little guidance. The project's website is http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbling - you'll not ethat I started it over a year ago; unfortunately, right after that things got terribly busy :) but now with a little more time, I want to get back at it.

    The CVS has an initial stab at a directory layout and some config/environment stuff, taken from a suggested best practices on the smarty website, but I already have some questions on that, too.

    Let me know if you're interested. Email to my username @ livejournal.com is fine. if nobody's into it, then I'll probably just go ahead and fuddle through my own way, but it sure would be nice to get some knowledge in from the beginning so that we/I don't have to redo it later!

    Cheers!

  7. The PHP/mySQL issue

    Date: 06/07/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, software, html, xml, database, asp, sql, security, web, apache

    Here's what I have
    Apache 1.3.33
    PHP 5.0.4
    MySQL 4.1.12a
    Operating System: Windows 98

    The error that I got when I tried using mysql_connect() on a php page:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect()

    Things that I have done so far:
    Apache, mySQL, and PHP are in directories on the C drive, named accordingly

    in php.ini, this is what I changed (change in italics)
    doc_root = "C:\Apache\htdocs"
    extension_dir "C:\php\ext"

    Removed the ";" in front of extension = php_mysql.dll (Is there supposed to be quotation marks on this line?)

    Saved a copy of php.ini (after these changes) in the C:\Windows directory
    Saved copies of c:\php\libmysql.dll & c:\php\ext\php_mysql.dll to the C:\Windows directory

    [PHP]

    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; About php.ini ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
    ; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
    ; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
    ; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
    ; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
    ; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
    ; the -c argument in command line mode.
    ;
    ; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
    ; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
    ; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
    ; they might mean something in the future.
    ;
    ; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
    ; directive = value
    ; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
    ;
    ; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
    ; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
    ; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
    ;
    ; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
    ; | bitwise OR
    ; & bitwise AND
    ; ~ bitwise NOT
    ; ! boolean NOT
    ;
    ; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
    ; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
    ;
    ; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
    ; sign, or by using the None keyword:
    ;
    ; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
    ; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
    ; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
    ;
    ; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
    ; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
    ; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
    ;

    ; This is the recommended, PHP 5-style version of the php.ini-dist file. It
    ; sets some non standard settings, that make PHP more efficient, more secure,
    ; and encourage cleaner coding.
    ;
    ; The price is that with these settings, PHP may be incompatible with some
    ; applications, and sometimes, more difficult to develop with. Using this
    ; file is warmly recommended for production sites. As all of the changes from
    ; the standard settings are thoroughly documented, you can go over each one,
    ; and decide whether you want to use it or not.
    ;
    ; For general information about the php.ini file, please consult the php.ini-dist
    ; file, included in your PHP distribution.
    ;
    ; This file is different from the php.ini-dist file in the fact that it features
    ; different values for several directives, in order to improve performance, while
    ; possibly breaking compatibility with the standard out-of-the-box behavior of
    ; PHP. Please make sure you read what's different, and modify your scripts
    ; accordingly, if you decide to use this file instead.
    ;
    ; - register_globals = Off [Security, Performance]
    ; Global variables are no longer registered for input data (POST, GET, cookies,
    ; environment and other server variables). Instead of using $foo, you must use
    ; you can use $_REQUEST["foo"] (includes any variable that arrives through the
    ; request, namely, POST, GET and cookie variables), or use one of the specific
    ; $_GET["foo"], $_POST["foo"], $_COOKIE["foo"] or $_FILES["foo"], depending
    ; on where the input originates. Also, you can look at the
    ; import_request_variables() function.
    ; Note that register_globals is going to be depracated (i.e., turned off by
    ; default) in the next version of PHP, because it often leads to security bugs.
    ; Read http://php.net/manual/en/security.registerglobals.php for further
    ; information.
    ; - register_long_arrays = Off [Performance]
    ; Disables registration of the older (and deprecated) long predefined array
    ; variables ($HTTP_*_VARS). Instead, use the superglobals that were
    ; introduced in PHP 4.1.0
    ; - display_errors = Off [Security]
    ; With this directive set to off, errors that occur during the execution of
    ; scripts will no longer be displayed as a part of the script output, and thus,
    ; will no longer be exposed to remote users. With some errors, the error message
    ; content may expose information about your script, web server, or database
    ; server that may be exploitable for hacking. Production sites should have this
    ; directive set to off.
    ; - log_errors = On [Security]
    ; This directive complements the above one. Any errors that occur during the
    ; execution of your script will be logged (typically, to your server's error log,
    ; but can be configured in several ways). Along with setting display_errors to off,
    ; this setup gives you the ability to fully understand what may have gone wrong,
    ; without exposing any sensitive information to remote users.
    ; - output_buffering = 4096 [Performance]
    ; Set a 4KB output buffer. Enabling output buffering typically results in less
    ; writes, and sometimes less packets sent on the wire, which can often lead to
    ; better performance. The gain this directive actually yields greatly depends
    ; on which Web server you're working with, and what kind of scripts you're using.
    ; - register_argc_argv = Off [Performance]
    ; Disables registration of the somewhat redundant $argv and $argc global
    ; variables.
    ; - magic_quotes_gpc = Off [Performance]
    ; Input data is no longer escaped with slashes so that it can be sent into
    ; SQL databases without further manipulation. Instead, you should use the
    ; function addslashes() on each input element you wish to send to a database.
    ; - variables_order = "GPCS" [Performance]
    ; The environment variables are not hashed into the $_ENV. To access
    ; environment variables, you can use getenv() instead.
    ; - error_reporting = E_ALL [Code Cleanliness, Security(?)]
    ; By default, PHP surpresses errors of type E_NOTICE. These error messages
    ; are emitted for non-critical errors, but that could be a symptom of a bigger
    ; problem. Most notably, this will cause error messages about the use
    ; of uninitialized variables to be displayed.
    ; - allow_call_time_pass_reference = Off [Code cleanliness]
    ; It's not possible to decide to force a variable to be passed by reference
    ; when calling a function. The PHP 4 style to do this is by making the
    ; function require the relevant argument by reference.

    ; Output buffering allows you to send header lines (including cookies) even
    ; after you send body content, at the price of slowing PHP's output layer a
    ; bit. You can enable output buffering during runtime by calling the output
    ; buffering functions. You can also enable output buffering for all files by
    ; setting this directive to On. If you wish to limit the size of the buffer
    ; to a certain size - you can use a maximum number of bytes instead of 'On', as
    ; a value for this directive (e.g., output_buffering=4096).
    output_buffering = 4096

    ; You can redirect all of the output of your scripts to a function. For
    ; example, if you set output_handler to "mb_output_handler", character
    ; encoding will be transparently converted to the specified encoding.
    ; Setting any output handler automatically turns on output buffering.
    ; Note: People who wrote portable scripts should not depend on this ini
    ; directive. Instead, explicitly set the output handler using ob_start().
    ; Using this ini directive may cause problems unless you know what script
    ; is doing.
    ; Note: You cannot use both "mb_output_handler" with "ob_iconv_handler"
    ; and you cannot use both "ob_gzhandler" and "zlib.output_compression".

    ; outputs chunks that are few hundreds bytes each as a result of
    ; compression. If you prefer a larger chunk size for better
    ; performance, enable output_buffering in addition.
    ; Note: You need to use zlib.output_handler instead of the standard

  9. Hello World and a question

    Date: 01/03/06 (SQL Server)    Keywords: database, sql

    Just joined. Looks like a nice comm.

    Quick question:

    I have a production database that is about 1 GB in size. I have been tasked to script that baby out into sql files. The tables, procedures, etc. should be little problem (thanks to the database scripting wizard), but the data is eluding me. How can I (relatively automated) script table data into a series of INSERT statements?

    Is there any way to avoid manually typing:
    "INSERT INTO tbl_WHATEVER (ID, FIELD1, FIELD2, ...) VALUES (1, 1, 1, ...)"?

    Thanks in advance!

  10. A small problem

    Date: 12/08/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: database, sql

    I am having some issues starting a procedure. I need to create a sql procedure where the user creates a new dog in a database. The information that is going to be inserted is : gender first, which will stop the program if not identified in the database, breed, which will go under unknown if there is no existing record in database, owner id, which will go under ORPHAN if no existing record, eye color, which will create a new entry for a new eye color is not already in DB, and finally create the dog with dog_id once all the other parts are taken care of. I need to have exception handling in this procedure as well. I would like someone to help me to start this.

    Yesterday after lunch, I got one of those famous, hurried "critical" requests to export some data to a vendor for an important project. Someone from our Stock Administration team insisted on meeting with me to give me a USB drive to get the database image. Apparently, they needed someone to import the data on our system, then export it in a format requested by the vendor in order to test and configure a new offering for us.

    I was already irritated that yet another team had failed to document and obtain resources for their data requirements, therefore making an emergency for me that very important people would hear about if I didn't follow through. I did what I aways do, I said I'd look at it and see what could be done. Oh man...you know what I saw? This dude had been walking around all over the place with this little flash drive in is pocket with stock administration data for EVERYONE IN OUR COMPANY. This data included Social Security Numbers, Birthday's, Names, Addresses, Salaries, and Stock Options. AND he wanted me to just send it off to some company to play around with. I was pretty mad, especially when he had his manager call me to complain.

    I explained that this was in violation with our SOX commitments and that the data would have to be at the very least cleansed before it was sent out. I also mentioned that I didn't particularly want my SSN sent to parts unknown for a proof-of-concept project. After that I found a kind way of mentioning that carrying around sensitive data in an unsecure format is grounds for termination. Then his manager called the CIO. All the better, at least the CIO understands INFORMATION and the protection thereof!

    I didn't have a clue how to cleanse data, but it had to get done fast, so I did a google search for tools, and I found this little gem. The DTM Data Generator contained a robust set of tools for analyzing the SQL tables field by field, while retaining the referential integrity. It's very versatile. I'm definately going to use this again. I think I might finally generate those mean sets of data for our QA team to test against. This tool rocks.

  12. SQL Server Remote Query issue...

    Date: 09/19/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: database, sql

    Alright, here's the scenario. I have 65 million row table of zip codes... the table just has three columns: zip_cd varchar(10), lattitude, and longitude values. Zip_cd is varchar(10) because we have to store zip + plus 4 values in "xxxxx-xxxx" format... and no, my senior DBA has already overruled me adding two more numeric columns which would offer more optimized indexing. There's a clustered index on the zip_cd and we only ever run lookups on zip_cd, to get lat/long values.

    Anyway, we have one simple query as follows:

    --

    DECLARE @zip_cd varchar(10)
    SET @zip_cd = '60440-0001'

    IF EXISTS(SELECT zip_cd
    FROM serverX.databaseY.dbo.geodata
    WHERE zip_cd = @zip_cd)
    PRINT 'one'
    ELSE
    PRINT 'two'

    --

    Starting late last week, one of our servers running this query started taking forever and a day. Upon running it manually and checking the execution plan, I see that SQL Server, in all of its wisdom, decided to run the "SELECT zip_cd" portion WITHOUT the WHERE clause on the remote server, THEN apply a "filter" step for the WHERE clause. I attempted to replicate this on other servers and 2/3s of our other servers runs the query correctly, by sending everything to the remote server, whereas 2 other servers also just pull all 65 million rows down THEN filters it locally.

    So my question is this... how in the hell can I force SQL Server to run the query in one fashion, rather than another? I know about using table and query hints, but the problem is that this is a remote server scenario, which Query Analyzer was complaining that index hints won't work.

    Help?

  13. Programming Goodness

    Date: 10/15/04 (Elite PHP Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, java

    I was lookin around and found this tonight. Very much kewlness, I am hopeing to join in on the fun in the development community so I can add in my ideas to make PHP even better.
    This is a little bit of information I picked up on Creating Custom Exceptions and sending data to the parent class from a function in a subclass. Very spiffy.

    query("SELECT NOW()");
    var_dump($result->fetch_row());
    }
    catch(ConnectException $exception) {
    echo "Connection Error\n";
    var_dump($exception->getMessage());
    }
    catch(QueryException $exception) {
    echo "Query Error\n";
    var_dump($exception->getMessage());
    }
    /* Handle exceptions that we weren't expecting */
    catch(Exception $exception) {
    echo "Who was that masked exception?\n";
    var_dump($exception->getMessage());
    }

    $result->close();
    $my->close();

    ?>

    very spiffy, and I will be posting something using the new MySQLi class. Maybe a whole class system for the generation of graphics pulled from a database. Possibly attach that to a javascript paint proggy, or even better a flash paint proggy..... hmmm the posibilities are endless, but i have to get back to my money making... Gotta love it, but it would be so much more fun if i had a project that really challenged my knowledge and abilities, but well get to that someday.

  14. Dropdowns

    Date: 12/14/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, java

    Hi, I have some questions regarding the best way to go about creating dynamic dropdowns in javascript.

    I have to create a form with two dropdown lists. One for US states the other for counties within those states. The county dropdown will remain blank until the user selects a state, then the county dropdown will be populated with the correct counties for that state.

    I have this working using PHP (the rest of the application is PHP) but I want to do it without reloading the page. The list of states and counties are stored in 2 tables in a mysql database.

    My first instinct is use PHP to write the javascript for me. Do the DB work with PHP and then write the javascript arrays. But that seems wrong.

    I would think that the javascript should go something like this and would be called from an onchange handler in the state dropdown. I dont know the exact syntax.

    create function setOptions(id)

    create array of counties indexed with their id's from the database

    if there is an id passed to the function
        iterate through the array of counties
            if a key matches the id then write that to the options tag of the county select list

    Is that the right direction? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  15. Dropdown madness

    Date: 12/09/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: database

    Hi all I have a project that requires me to be able to do the following.

    Display a dropdown of US states, when state is selected the corresponding countys will appear in another dropdown.

    Like this page: http://www.personalinjurylawyer.com/

    If anyone can help me with the following I would be most appreciative.

    1) Where can I buy the code that would make that happen?
    or
    2) Where can I buy the database so I can create the code on my own?

    Thanks in advance.

  16. Concurrent Access (In Access)

    Date: 11/16/05 (Software)    Keywords: software, database

    Hello.

    In an effort to speed up the process (and eliminate the amount of dead tree used) in the course of monitoring my work, I decided to not bother with the paper forms my precessor had been using.

    I decided that a Access Database was the way forward (simple to use, and the Access software is on all the computers at work here). For the first couple of weeks I was here, this worked fine, as there was only me using it, and it was on 'my' network drivespace. This morning I was granted access to the shared filespace. This meant that myself and my colleague will be able to use the database.

    Now, the problem I have is that sometimes, things that he has entered don't show up, and things that I have altered don't show up. I have had a look at 'help', and it suggested using 'Records -> Refresh' to make any changes show up. I added a button to the form (which looks like this) to make this simpler.

    I'm not 100% convinced that this is working 100% of the time. Is there a way of forcing the database to refresh itself, so that the most recent version of the table containing the data is always the most recent?

  17. Nearest match bit-string search.

    Date: 01/18/06 (Algorithms)    Keywords: database

    Here's a doozy of a problem. I've been beating my head for a while to come up with the best data structure and/or algorithm for handling this, but I'm drawing a blank.

    I have a large number (on the order of 100 million or more) 4096-bit values. I need to store them in a database or similar structure so that given a 4096-bit key, and a number N, I can extract and present all records that contain (in this order)

    a) that exact key.
    b) keys that differ by at most 1 bit.
    c) keys that differ by at most 2 bits.
    ...
    X) keys that differ by at most N bits.

    I need the entire thing to be as fast as possible, to the extent that I am willing to burn several hundred gigabytes of storage if that will get me some speed. Any ideas?

  18. Other methods than using Genetic Programming to build machine

    Date: 12/25/05 (Algorithms)    Keywords: database

    In my prev project, I used GP to build evolve hardware, more specifically, a radar. The radar is unknown, only thing known is if X is input then Y is output and I built the radar based on the input database and based on some common-sense about what the radar is like. It works fairly well w/ GP however I always look for more ideas so that I can solve more complicated hardware models. I am wondering if there are other algorithms/methods to achieve the same goal ? I am hoping to find some other alternatives to hybrid their strong features to my GP proj. Thanks

  19. Super Secret Santa

    Date: 11/30/05 (Algorithms)    Keywords: php, database, shopping

    So every year my friends and I do a Secret Santa exchange (the basic idea under a normal setup is to take a set of n names and derange them, so each person buys a gift for someone else, the 'secret' part being that nobody knows who's shopping for whom)... but we have a large group and there's some people who simply don't know each other, so being the programmer that I am, I scripted up a few PHP pages and a database to allow people to sign up to partipate, and then select the members that they would be willing to shop for. Ideally, I can call the "assignment" algorithm, write the results back to the database, and never know who has whom.

    The trick now is to write an efficient (ideally! correctness is vital, no approximations! and n is not THAT large that exponential is out of the question) algorithm to find the shopping assignments OR prove that the input does not allow an assignment where every participant is: 1) being shopped for by exactly one person and 2) shops for exactly one person other than himself

    Algorithmically speaking:

    GIVEN:
    D, a simple digraph (no loops), where a node is a person and an edge from X to Y indicates X is willing to shop for Y

    FIND:
    D', a subset of D, where forall v in V, indegree(v) = outdegree(v) = 1. D' need not be connected (there is no guarantee D is). OR prove that given D, there is no satisfying D'.

    CONSTRAINTS:
    Must be correct. Time is key. A large but reasonable amount of space may be used. Bonus points if the algorithm can be randomized (or even produces different output if you start at a different node, so long as other constraints are still met).

    Since I have a small n, I can play around with insane solutions like "select a random assignment, check for validity, if not valid repeat"... but it seems like there should be some sort of algorithm to do this, but at the same time, I wonder if maybe it is more difficult than it seems...

  20. CMS

    Date: 01/19/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: cms, mysql, database, sql

    I am writing an open source cms called Rade (intended for release), and want to store images in the MySQL database; MediaWiki's upload system sounds suspiciously insecure, and makes storing metadata harder. However, I have read that blobs in SQL databases decrease their performance. Should I store the images in another table? Another database?
