1. Ping options

    Date: 10/26/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I've wondered if there is ever any benefit to using large packet sizes when pinging a host.  A coworker of mine uses the following settings to ping a domain controller:

    ping [hostname] -l 4096 -i 128 -v 12 -w 1000

    Now, this means that a large, fragmented ping of TOS type 12 is being sent to the host.  The packet loss rate goes up, in part because of the increased amount of data being transmitted, but does that mean there's a link problem?  Is it really a more reliable way to monitor connection health than to use smaller packets?

  3. W32/Spybot.Worm

    Does anyone have any experience removing this from a Windows 2000 system w/o rebooting into Safe Mode? We are running SAV corporate 8.x on most of the systems in our network, and it is not able to remove MSAOL32dll.exe from the system. I am also unable to kill the process from the task manager.

    I've been to SARC.com and done google searches for it, and haven't found any way to remove it other than rebooting the system into safe mode. Unfortunately, I have two servers that take miracles to reboot (they control our entire floor) that have been infected.

    x-posted to it_admin

    EDIT: got it covered. '[info]'pokemone recommended "process explorer" from sysinternals. It allowed me to kill the process and SAV took over from there.

  5. Windows Server Auditing

    Date: 10/21/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I have a need to audit a bunch of servers at my office.

    We need to monitor these kinds of changes:
    * Registry
    * Event Logs
    * Active Directory Changes

    We don't need instant monitoring, we just need to be able to go back "after the fact" and see what one our network operations guys did to mess something up.

    I know we may need a few utilities to pull this off, and we have maybe 5-6 servers we want it on.

    What do you guys use for this?

    Thanks!

    An example of what we're looking for is "who disabled the network card?" and "who disabled this person's account"

  7. Exchange domain name suffix question

    Date: 10/20/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I just set up an MS Exchange 2003 server (on Windows 2003 Server) but didn't have the domain suffix right when I joined the domain.  The server is registered as "mail01.company.com" but should be registered as "mail01.subnet.company.com" instead.  If I remove the machine from the domain then I trash the GUID and would mess up Exchange... how else can I fix the registered DNS name in AD without messing things up?

    I was at work the other day and complaining about how I wish Media Player hadn't become so froofroo. And I was delighted when my co-worker showed me this:

    http://www.divx-digest.com/software/media_player_classic.html

    It works with all the new codecs and stuff unlike mplayer.exe. And its compact, unlike Media Player.

  15. disk imaging software?

    Date: 10/13/05     Keywords: linux

    hey all,

    i need to clone a Win32 PC's hard disk (NTFS partitions). it's on a SATA controller.

    i realize there's some solid commercial packages out there, but i wondered if anyone has any opinions on linux-based boot CDs for disk imaging. i've checked out g4u, which seems pretty good, though i've had problems booting it on specific laptop models. any recommendations, o i.t. gods and goddesses?

  17. MSN Video/Video conferencing through a firewall without upnp support

    Date: 10/10/05     Keywords: security, microsoft

    Hi,

    As you may know, MSN requires upnp for video chat/voice chat to happen, I'm currently using borderware, almost all (heck, maybe all) eal4+ certified firewalls do not support upnp because its a security loophole.

    however, the alternative being to open the entire udp 5004-65535 range according to microsoft's documentation...

    does anyone have any suggestions?

    either an alternative video conferencing tool or a solution to the firewall problem?

    Does anyone here use Cisco Call Manager?

    If so, maybe I can pick your brains about two huge problems that I am having - one being redial- the other forwarding a no answer out to the PSTN to make an 800 call.

    Than's ever so much! =)
