1. Resizing all image files in subfolders

    Date: 10/18/07     Keywords: software

I have roughly 100GB-200GB of image files that are around 1mb each, which needs to be resized automagically to roughly 1024x768 pixels.

Would anyone have a suggestions on what software I can do this without it crashing.

The program needs to do this recursively on subfolders.

  5. Sharepoint 07 Calendar size

    Date: 10/11/07     Keywords: web

     Hi,

I'm trying to figure out a way to make the calendar, as it appears in a webpart, smaller without ending up with scroll bars.  I'd love to know if it can be shrunk, or if the sat/sun columns could be removed, anything really, because I'd like to have it not take up a huge chunk of my page.

    Any help would be great.

    Date: 10/09/07     Keywords: no keywords

ive looked at a lot of articles and methods to do with subnetting over the last few days by way of refreshing my mind and have got it pretty well sussed out. amazing how quickly you forget these things! anyway...

to calculate the number of host, the equation is 2^Y-2 where y in the number of host bits

to calculate the number of subnets, the equation is 2^X-2 where x is the number of network bits.

trouble is that some articles say 2^x-2 and some say 2^X to calculate the number of network bits.

i cannot for the life of me find out which is supposed to be correct, as each approach makes NO reference to the other approach.

    i was always taught 2^x-2

    any opinions, thoughts?

  10. Vista firewall woes

    Date: 09/25/07     Keywords: software, google

We have a new, Vista-running development machine here, and I'm having some serious firewall issues with it.

Before I join the machine to a domain, I'm able to turn the firewall on and off with a local admin account. Once I join a domain, I am unable to turn it on, to the tune of "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service." However, even after I leave the domain (and am only in a work group), I am unable to start the service. This is a clean install of Vista Business.

Is this a "that's how Vista works" issue, or is there something more here? I've Googled my greasy little heart out on this.

    Thanks for reading.

**EDIT - I need the firewall service to be running for the remote admin software that's on the machine.

We're a small-medium business with 200 users looking for an iSCSI based SAN for about 6 servers and 1TB data, with the potential to grow to 15 servers and 2TB data.

What should we look at? What should we avoid at all costs? What are your experiences?

We've gotten a few quotes, but I'd like to hear some feedback from my "Peers" on what works and what doesn't in the real-world. Especially things beyond the 'specs' like "Brand X's management interface is clunky and SO confusing!"

Or is anyone good with Crystal Reports and patient who just might like to share some emails/IMs with a non-profit employee having to learn very very fast? Or can anyone at least recommend some good resources for Crystal Reports? In particular I'm interested in the best way to share explorable reports with non-technically minded employees (do you like the CRXI web-client? something else all together), methods of backing up a CRXI server, and why subreports seem to cause a lot of stuff to break. I have searched the web, and it seems that CRXI does not have the vibrant user community or abundance of free documentation that most products I've successfully learned on my own do, but maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

  19. Curiosity killed the cat

    Date: 09/03/07     Keywords: no keywords

Perhaps one of you can shed some light on this for me. It's not exactly a problem, but just a mystery that doesn't make sense to me.

Say you have a dedicated box being used as a Ghostcast server. Said box has a gigabit NIC card in it. If I plug one end of a 3ft Cat6 patch cable into this box, and the other into a similar computer with an identical NIC that I want to deploy an image to, I get a Ghostcasting speed of approximately 500MBytes/min.

We have a Cisco gigabit switch available to use (a Catalyst 5000G, specifically). If I plug 6 computers into the switch (including the server) and assign the same IP/Subnet range to all of them, I get a Ghostcasting speed of nearly 2000MBytes/min. All cables are Cat6 and approximately the same length, and I'm spitting out exactly the same image.

I suspect that the speed difference is due to my using a patch cable and not a crossover; I'm aware that many cards will automatically correct this through hardware - would that slow it down? What does the switch do differently that speeds it up so dramatically? Why is that that plugging a short Cat6 cable directly between server and client is four times slower than 6 computers running through a gig switch? Thank you for any insight you provide.

  20. Sharepoint 2007 Master pages query

Date: 09/01/07     Keywords: programming, html, technology, asp, java, web, microsoft

    Hi all,

I've been battling with creating (rather modifying a custom page someone else before me has created) a custom master page for my company for a while now; it looks great-ish, but there's a major flaw in there, behind the scenes it's full of errors; I have to link the master page to just about every file such as newForm.aspx and etc. further the most major issue is that a non admin user can't see the custom content; but farm admins can see the custom content just fine.

I suspect there's a whole lot missing in the master page (as I've tried the same thing with a default page, and it worked fine, so my permission settings are fine, even though for non Admins it says "error: access denied", the issue is the master sheet for sure, since the error dissapears  when i switch back to one of MOSS default masters) thing is i don't have enough knowledge of master pages (I am relatively new to SharePoint 2007; having worked with 2003 years ago. I've never done any major customizations like this one)  to fix it on my own, even though i've spent the past few weeks trying to do so.

The project I'm working on (an intranet for a media company) is due to go live Sept 9th, thing is, without proper user permissions it'll be tricky to make it work properly, and I've been battling with the master page for about two weeks now trying to make it work, I fix one issue, but keep finding more.

I appreciate any and all the help i can get on this one as all the code's starting to look the same to me now, and maybe a fresh set of eyes will help.

Master page code and screenshot of what it looks like and what it should look like for all users below the cuts, if you need any extra info please contact me, and I'll provide for you; I really really appreciate it if someone can help me out on this one.
