i need to simplify my life
Date: 02/24/09
(Computer Help) Keywords: web, linux, spam
OK I'm really looking for two things here.
1. I have multiple email accounts that I would like to consolidate into one portable space. I don't know if there is a webmail program that I could install on my webspace or something that could use pop email (the one that my webhost uses sucks and i hate it). I have a lot of mailing lists and all kinds of crap saved into thunderbird, but whenever I want to send an email I have to use this computer and that's becoming more and more of a pain in the ass. I've tried zenbe and I don't like it. I don't want to use gmail's feature to import pop accounts because i'm not too crazy about gmail (or any other free webmail for that matter) having access to all these emails that i'm using for my other thing. I don't want to use like portable thunderbird because it's not cross-platform (i use linux, windows and mac osx all on a regular basis) and I would like it to be web-based so I don't have to fuck with my flash drive every time I want to check my email. Something like this has to exist, and I'm sure it's free, I just don't know where to look anymore.
2. I would like to know where I can send text messages from the internet. I don't know if just emailing a phone number works all the time. I send text messages to multiple people on a pretty regular basis (not spam but reminders about meetings and stuff) and I'm eating up all my text messages on my non-unlimited plan. This also must exist too, I just don't know where to find it.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Focus Weirdness with Firefox
Date: 11/21/08
(Mozilla) Keywords: linux
(This is a post I made to the Linux community, but got no help. Apologies for the duplication, to anyone who may have already seen this.)
I'm pretty sure this only started happening fairly recently... after realizing that my laptop's video card is better-supported under Ubuntu 8.04 (with the Gnome desktop), I played around with compiz a bit. But somewhere along the way, Firefox (v. 3) developed a strange behavior with regards to focus: it keeps losing it. I even switched back to the no-frills WM for Gnome, and it still has this problem. A basic synopsis of what happens, is:
* Start with a FF window, click on it to focus if it isn't already
* Load a page, when the throbber stops rotating, the window suddenly becomes unfocused
* Click to re-focus, reload the page and it goes away again
* If I have multiple tabs open, switching tabs with the keyboard (ctrl-tab) also loses focus
The focus isn't going anywhere that I can tell. That is, there is no other window that suddenly *has* the focus, it's just that FF *doesn't*.
I noticed while experimenting with compiz, that FF seemed to develop a number of "ghost" windows that would appear when I hit alt-tab to switch between apps/windows. These don't show up in the switcher when running the no-frills WM, but I wonder if they are still there, it's just that the default WM (metacity) set their WM hints better than compiz does, and that one of these "ghosts" is what keeps getting the focus? Either way, as a very keyboard-centric user it's seriously cramping the usability.
Anyone else see anything like this?

Opera HTML Email Display Problem
Date: 03/06/09
(Opera Browser) Keywords: browser, css, html, linux
I just upgraded to Opera 9.63 browser for Linux, and one thing I am having trouble with is I use black backgrounds for everything and I can't figure out how to specify white text for HTML emails. So unfortunately I keep ending up with black text on black backgrounds in HTML emails, or sometimes dark gray on black. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix that?
I've tried changing all colors in mime.css to white except for the background but this only seems to work for text emails not HTML emails. Any ideas?

ERROR 1201 (HY000): Could not initialize master info structure ...
Date: 06/17/08
(MySQL Communtiy) Keywords: mysql, database, sql, linux
Hello all. I'm so bored to kill this error ... can anybody help me?
I have one master and about 10 slave servers. Time to time one (absolutely random) slave server lost replication connection. When i type slave stop; slave start; i see "ERROR 1201 (HY000): Could not initialize master info structure; more error messages can be found in the MySQL error log"
When i look at /var/log/mysql.log, i see
[ERROR] Failed to open the relay log '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld-relay-bin.000759' (relay_log_pos 235)
080617 12:25:45 [ERROR] Could not find target log during relay log initialization
OK, "slave reset", drop databases , set MASTER etc, slave start - and replication does just fine. without any errors. Until the next time.
I add to my.cnf next lines:
max-relay-log-size=1M
max-binlog-size=2M
relay-log=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld-relay-bin
But without any effect: replication may work fine long time or break at next hour.
Question: how can set replication, that always work ? :)
Platform: Linux Fedora 6 & 7, mysql 5.0.45, no any errors about disk or memory. Size of replication tables - about 1-2Mb
