1. Optical Mouse Annoyances

    Date: 01/06/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: microsoft

    My new computer came with a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse 1.0a. Ever since I got it its been having issues with jumping to the corners of the screen. This becomes REALLY annoying playing games like CS and COD:2 because it disorients me so. Anyways I tried different USB ports, different drivers, adn even got a replacement mouse. Has anyone had this problem before? I heard that they make Optical Mouse Pads, but I don't know if these actually DO anything or if they're like "MUSIC CD-R VS DATA CD-R" (I.e. they basically do the same thing but have different labels.) Any advice would be nice.

    "This copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate now?"
    If you click no it takes you back to the log on screen. If you press yes, it says "this copy of windows is already activated. Press ok to continue." and then takes you back to the log on screen.
    Can anyone help, please?

  5. frustrating problem(s)

    Date: 01/08/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, yahoo, microsoft, google

    On my older computer (a Dell that runs Windows 98), I keep getting invalid page fault errors. Several occur after Windows has loaded:
    YOP (that's Yahoo Online Protection)
    rundll32
    and something called autodown

    It also occurs when I startup Internet Explorer, I get that program error message asking me if I want to send data to Microsoft and then the program crashes. I can't access the Internet even though I'm connected.

    All the errors say that the program caused an invalid page fault error at module "unknown"

    I've tried running anti-virus (AVG) and Ad-aware... I have that computer networked with this one (running Windows XP) and sharing a DSL connection. After some issues in the beginning, I finally got the network up and running so I've been using this computer to download the antivirus programs so I can run them on the other one since I can't get IE to work there at all.
    Another thing that may or may not be related: if I uncheck automatically detect settings under LAN settings in internet options, then IE doesn't crash, but the pages won't load.

    I'm also having a small, unrelated issue on this computer (the windows XP one). I can't get the internet options setting for "never dial a connection" to stick. I have DSL, so I'm always connected, but certain sites make the dial a connection box pop up. And when I head back to internet options, the "dial whenever a network connection is not present" option is checked off.

    Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! I've tried Dell's support website as well as Microsoft's and Googled 'til I couldn't see straight, but I haven't come up with any solutions for my problem.

    "Invalid search path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\SDK\v1.1\Lib\' specified in 'LIB environment variable' -- 'The system cannot find the path specified. '"

    Well, not surprising, as VS2005 is supposed to be using v2.x, I would have thought. But where do I change the library path? The projects don't have any library path specified, so it must be a global setting somewhere, but where?

  10. what the hell did windows update do to my comp?

    Date: 01/12/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: microsoft

    HELP!!

    i'm running windows 98 SE. (Using the library's comp.) I stupidly (after re-installing IE 6.0) used microsoft windows update to find "crtical updates" for my computer, so I downloaded and installed them, and when I restarted, I got this at my desktop:

    "a required .DLL file, C:WINDOWS/SYSTEM/SHLWAPI.DLL, was not found."

    then I clicked out of that, and got:

    "error loading explorer.exe. You must reinstall windows."

    it's impossible to get into windows now.

    what the hell did windows update do???!?

    I tried to get into safe mode, I couldn't, and and I had to use my win98 boot disk to get it to a command prompt, where I tried to restore the registry from DOS. I restored it from the earilest backup, but the problem still remained when I got to the desktop, so it didn't work.

    Then I used the windows 98 CD and the win98 boot disk to get to the command prompt to restore the missing file from the CD to the windows/system directory. I no longer got the "you must reinstall windows" or "shlwapi.dll is missing" error, but now when I try to load my desktop, my custom background loads, but no taskbar or icons will load. It stops and gives me a new error:

    " This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

    Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe at 0167:00401f31."

    (stackdump, random numbers, etc)

    after clicking out of that dialog box, the desktop stays blank and refuses to load. There is no taskbar, icons, or anything else, just my background. Nothing works, I have to restart using ctrl+alt+del.

    * Reformatting is NOT an option since I now have no way to backup my files.

    If anyone can tell me what to do to make the desktop load properly so I can back my files up, i'd greatly appreciate it. If anyone needs additional info from me to fix the issue, please ask me.

    Thanks!

    I'm doing the hardware performance eval for my company to see if our existing systems can perform sufficiently with the new OS.

    The download speed is quite fast. :) Almost 90% when I'm writing this.

    The size is a total of 2.86GB in ISO format and needs to be burn to DVD. This means that the PCs have to have a DVD drive or perhaps I could do a Network Share with either a bootable CD or floppy; have to read the documentation on this.

    Oh another thing, to download this, you need to be either a MSDN subscriber or a TechNet Plus subscriber.

    As you may know, MSN requires upnp for video chat/voice chat to happen, I'm currently using borderware, almost all (heck, maybe all) eal4+ certified firewalls do not support upnp because its a security loophole.

    however, the alternative being to open the entire udp 5004-65535 range according to microsoft's documentation...

    does anyone have any suggestions?

    either an alternative video conferencing tool or a solution to the firewall problem?

  18. Long posty

    Date: 12/27/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: security, microsoft

    This is a long post about one problem I have with Microsoft Report Viewer reports for .NET 2.0. Please don't skip it :)

    ok, I have a simple windows form with report viewer control placed on it. The datasource for my reports is an object described in a class. Most of the fields are pretty simple like:

    public string ObjectOperationType
      {
       get
       {
        return ent.Offer.OfferType.ToString();
       }
      }

    where "ent" is a business object the application uses.

    Some fields, though, are bit more complex and return List<> of things, like:

    public List ObjectCloseLocations()
      {
       List items = new List();
       foreach (DirectoryEntry de in ent.Attributes[31].AvailableItemsList)
       {
        if (((ListDirectoryEntries)ent.Attributes[31]).Contains(de))
        {
         items.Add(new CloseLocations(de.Term, true));
        }
        else
        {
         items.Add(new CloseLocations(de.Term, false));
        }
       }
       return items;
      }

    The CloseLocations type is a class with two public fields (Key and Value) that are filled by my method and then passed into the report as a list and the report will show the list in a table quite happily.

    It all works fine, as long as you don't have to include the ListsTypes() on your reports.

    Originally, the code to get the proper BindingSource running looked like this:

    ViewObject MyData = new ViewObject(vid, HidePD);
       this.ViewObjectBindingSource.DataSource = MyData;
       this.comfortAndSecurityBindingSource.DataSource = MyData.ObjectComfortAndSecurity();
       this.closeLocationsBindingSource.DataSource = MyData.ObjectCloseLocations();
       this.propPhotoBindingSource.DataSource = MyData.PropertyImages();
       reportViewer1.RefreshReport();

    Now, when I pass List to my primary BindingSource, the other binding sources have to be List<> or List types.

    I tried this:

    List myData = new List();
    ... fill the list...
    List> comfort = new List>();
    foreach(ViewObject vo in mydata)
    {
    comfort.Add(vo.Comfort());
    }
    this.comfortAndSecurityBindingSource.DataSource = comfort();

    the problem now is that the comfort List<> is not "bount" to it's parent object that shall be getting data from it. How can I fix this?

    Has anyone dealed with this?

  20. micrapera? (first post, cross posted, sorry)

    Date: 12/26/05 (Opera Browser)    Keywords: microsoft, google, shopping

    hi, i'm new here *waves*

    so slashdot has pointed to articles rumoring that opera is being / has already been bought by microsoft

    okay, stop screaming.  this is following another reported rumor last week that google was about to buy out opera, which fortunately opera themselves laughed off as false, as they also did with this (even more ridiculous) rumor here, here and here, so we can all sleep well tonight.

    there's even a hilarious poll asking opera fans to vote on who the next comany to be rumored opera shopping will be here.  they need to add microsoft (microsopera?  microsoft internet oxplora?  how about micrapera?) to the list.

    which makes me wonder:

    exactly what would a micrapera bastardized half-breed broswer be like?

    i imagine lots and lots and lots of completely unnecessary and ridiculous features no one uses while they'd take out all the useful ones.  maybe they'd hide them under eighteen million extra (ugly) buttons and menus.  when micrapera would crash (and it would of course) so would your computer and everyone else's computer on your neighborhood, and maybe your printer would get possessed by the devil.  the opera logo would be changed to a blue O with a hoop around it like an orbit.  maybe the 404 error would be replaced by a blue screen, or maybe a red one?  oh and it would come preloaded with a worm or two.  i don't know.

    i'm too creeped out now, so feel free to add to the list :-)
