pHp newbie
Date: 03/07/07
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, mysql, css, html, database, sql, web, microsoft
I have to make an online volunteer hour logger for a school project, so I've been teaching myself PHP for the past few days, but for some reason none of the scripts I've tried have worked for me. I have a domain and server that provide MySQL and a web-based database manager (CPanel) and know HTML and CSS pretty well.
Basically what I want my website to be able to do is:
1. Enable users to register (fields: name, student no., password, password verification, email)
2. Login and submit their volunteering information in a form (fields: organization name, event/activity, volunteer type (drop down), date, #hours, reference letter (check box))
3. Be able to edit this information after submission
4. Logout
5. Possibly the administration being able to access a report summarizing a certain user's information? (like a query on Microsoft Access)
I've been following: http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorial/Signup-and-Login/3027 but after doing everything I don't know how to connect users to members-only pages.
My website right now is: http://www.rhscolts.org/cas
Login will be registration and login, and Your Hours will have a "Please login or register" message unless the person is already logged in, in which case the form and their volunteering info will appear.
Is this too hard to do? Because I asked some people before I set about doing this project and they told me all I need is a few scripts, but then nothing is really working right now :(
Can anyone help me please?
My email is sheatore@hotmail.com if you want to talk to me directly.
Please and thank you in advance, ANYONE!

Does open source make Gates right on immigration?
Date: 03/08/07

If Microsoft can't find the people it wants here, at the price it's willing to pay, one would think it can certainly find them elsewhere. Yet Gates said Microsoft has 1,500 positions it can't fill, right now.

Should Microsoft be required to cooperate with open source?
Date: 03/12/07
(Open Source) Keywords: microsoft
It would seem to be in Microsoft's best interests to get a standard out there. Identity, which includes the management of passwords as well as credit card data, really hasn't progressed much in the last 10 years, partly due to Microsoft intransigence.

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 RC
Date: 03/13/07
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: web, microsoft
Microsoft quietly released Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 - all editions. Their website calls it a release candidate, but given it's presence on the official update site, I suspect it's the final version.
You can get it via the update site, or if you prefer (as I do) to get it as one download and apply it offline, you can get the entire package here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/sp2.mspx
Along with a complete rollup of all critical updates released since SP1, it also includes some new features, which depend on whether you are running the standard, R2 or SMS versions.
See the FAQs for more information.

CentricCRM Does Well In IBM Posse

Every major vendor today has a "posse," a set of open source vendors who surround it and live in its ecosystem. Microsoft has one. Novell has one. RedHat has one. IBM's is like the company itself, quiet, corporate, and shy unless they have something to say.

Vista help needed
Date: 03/16/07
(Microsoft Windows) Keywords: software, microsoft, google
Hello all. I'm about to ask three really dumb questions, but I'm not a computer whiz, so please bear with me.
I just upgraded from XP to Vista. Mistake number one, as I did it by myself.
So... after a rocky installation, I have the following problems:
1) It erased all my software. I can locate things like Word and Excel, but it tells me they aren't configured. Is there a way to do this without re-installing the software? I ask because I'm far away from the installation disks right now (at school, discs are at mum's).
2) My sound isn't working. When I attempt to do anything involving sound, I get the following message: "The computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio Service is not enabled. Would you like to enable the Windows Audio Service?" And I click 'Yes' and it takes me to the Sound menu. There, it says my VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller is working and enabled. There is no option to enable the Windows Audio Service though... any thoughts?
3) My Windows Live Messenger doesn't work. Apparently the system is stable and running, but I keep getting the following error code when I attempt to log in: "81000314". According to my google search, this might mean that Softpub.dll may have become unregistered. It suggests to register softpub.dll. Any insight into how I might go about doing this?
I appologize if these are really elementary questions... but I'm stumped. I've run available updates and searched the internet and microsoft.com at length, but no one is speaking my language (read: Dumb).
