1. Windows Media Player + Japanese Characters

    Date: 11/11/05     Keywords: no keywords

Is there a codec or an add-on I could download that would permit my WMP to properly display Japanese characters in my library/Now Playing window? It's actually quite frustrating when all I see are boxes in place of the track titles after getting the album info for the album.

    SOLVED! Thanks a bunch!

  7. C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\WMI\trace.log

    Date: 11/07/05     Keywords: no keywords

A few days ago I found that system disk space was very low.

I looked into the matter and found that it was consumed by C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\WMI\trace.log file. I have no idea what program generates it but it is several gigs already. I deleted it a few times yet it keeps reappearing and growing fast.

    Any ideas what causes that?

    P.S. I use WinXP Pro

I originally had Windows XP Professional but it wasn't licensed. So I went ahead and bought Windows XP Home Edition, which is licensed. I can't get the programs from the original version to transfer over to the Home Edition. Is there away to do this? Or will I just have to reinstall everything all over again? I'd like to delete the Professional one and just stick with the Home Edition. =X

I have noticed player acts a bit strangely - it moved every album, which author or name it didn't knew, to the "unnamed artist" folder (now there's 63 folders) and deleted main artist's folders where those albums were stored. It started after i changed XPhome to XPpro, and seems to happen randomly.
How do i teach this thing not to mess around with my folders?

  13. Weird XP reinstall problem

    Date: 10/26/05     Keywords: software, virus

Hi, long-time listener, first time caller, let me go ahead and jump right into it...

A buddy of mine at work has been having problems with his XP install so he decided to cut his losses, wipe the drive and reinstall. Perfectly normal, right? Well, here's where it gets weird...

After the numerous reboots he gets to the "Starting Windows for the first time..." screen. Everything looks normal. C:\ has tons of shit in there, everything's copacetic. He reboots the machine and it comes up to a C:\ prompt and a `dir' gives two or three files and that's it.

Allow me to reiterate that last bit to make sure everyone knows where I'm coming from, he installs XP, jumps through all the hoops, dots every i, crosses every t, everything looks good, he reboots and nothing's there.

Before you ask, "Why is he rebooting right after the install completes? Why is he doing that?", It's because the first piece of software that asked him to reboot, he did, and when the machine came back up, nothing was there.

We've checked the power supply, the RAM, formatted from an old 98SE install disk, ran the disk utility off the repair disk, ran the disk utility off the hard drive manufacturers repair disk, stuck a PCI IDE controller in the machine and installed/booted from there, no love, nothing.

At first I thought it was the IDE controller on the motherboard going bad, but it wouldn't have been able to write the OS to the hard drive to reboot for the "Starting Windows for the first time..." bit, never would've got that far.

You could say that it's never getting written to the hard drive but running from memory, but that wouldn't hold over between boots.

My latest idea is that maybe there's a boot sector virus written past the sector where XP writes the bootloader so it's not getting overwritten during reinstall, but that would get wiped during a format, wouldn't it? I've downloaded and burned a copy of Darren's Boot&Nuke (DBAN) and we're gonna try that next, but my hopes aren't that high.

Couldn't be a power supply problem, unless power supplies are wiping out OS's on reboot these days.

I would say it's a bad hard drive but it's done the same thing on two different hard drives.

The machine boots from Knoppix and runs fine, accessing the hard drives from Knoppix also works (albeit, there's nothing to look at), what the fuck is going on? I've been researching this for (going on) three weeks and I'm no closer to a solution than I was when I started. I don't think it's a hardware issue because Knoppix runs, why won't the XP install stick?

    Any ideas?

  14. Bizarre Windows XP Home mess

    Date: 10/22/05     Keywords: linux, microsoft

x-posted to my own journal, and another Windows community. If you guys have *any* idea what may have caused this, just so I can let my wife know and have a better idea myself... it would be appreciated. I'm primarily a Linux OS guy, and often going beyond basics and advanced stuff in Windows is a bit beyond me. Even one of my MS engineer friends was a bit stumped as to *what* caused this.

    ###

How's this for insane? We had decided that my 512 RAM chip (same models, everything across the board as my wife's box, which always had worked, responded, even sounded flawless) should go to her to give her a full gig of RAM. The machine boots, but with no video, at all. Odd. Try swapping back the old 256 chip instead (the old PCs have only two slots on the board). Video, but... Windows failed to load because it can't find:

    c:\windows\system32\config\system

Huh? WTF? We have no Windows media (or much anything right now) due to being technically in-move from one location to another so after getting blank CDs at Target, we get a Recovery Disk burned from an .iso found online. Sure enough, I can get in. But... her user is gone. The computer name is gone. Profiles, gone, and the entire system appears defaulted back to the OEM Windows installation. The main logon is passwordless and named "Owner" now, rather than my wife's name. The PC name is reset. All network settings, and all her personal data all still there in the folders for the user profile, however.

Gets better: the machine is "wobbly" now, in the words of our Microsoft engineer friend, who was utterly dumbfounded by what happened as I talked to him about it and worked on the system. Two vaguely plausible long shots: power surge as I powered down or up to install the new RAM, or "shite bad luck". He's very British. Any and all response to... anything on the system is very clippy and choppy now, regardless of what RAM is installed. Wife is in the process of backing up all her data to CD right now (1/2 way done so far).

Sunday I'm reinstalling Windows clean on her machine most likely.

  15. Energy Blue/Royale Theme Pack for Windows XP

    Date: 10/20/05     Keywords: microsoft

I hadn't seen this mentioned here, but just a while back Microsoft released a theme included in Windows Media Centre Edition 2005 called "Energy Blue" to Tablet PC users. At the same time they left us Windows XP users in the dark. [This] Package will install the theme onto a normal Windows XP Home/Professional PC. Alternately, you can download the official release from Microsoft New Zealand, but I like the package from Download.com much better.

By the way, are there any other theme packs out there, either officially released by Microsoft or elsewhere, that will change the visual style of my Windows XP without having to download a theme program to make them run? Thank you.

  17. Anyone use QuickTime Pro?

    Date: 10/09/05     Keywords: software

    Hey all,

I've been considering getting QTPro and wonder if anyone can provide some input.

I'm looking to play back mp4 video at full screen and the free QT player won't *grrrr* (if anyone knows of any player that does play .mp4 at full screen please reply)

Also, I'm looking at the authoring options, since I'd like to edit commercials out of shows I DVR on my PC and re-matte out the station logos *heh* and it looks like it would be good for editing mpeg video and pictures from my digicam together with music to make a DVD

It also seems Darwin Streaming Server could help with my idea of streaming media over my LAN to my laptop or hopefully my PSP

If anyone has any experience to share or recommendations of other software that'd be great - thanks in advance!

    btw - WinXP Pro / P4 3GHz / ATi Radeon 9800 if it matters

  18. Windows keeps dumping the physical memory

    Date: 10/05/05     Keywords: virus, spyware

I have a question. I have 2 accounts on my computer--my account and my boyfriend's account. My boyfriend's account is rarely rarely used, but lately he's tried to use it. My account works just fine, but his account keeps dumping the physical memory. I've cleaned the computer hardware, ran various anti-spyware programs, ran my virus protection program, defragged the harddrive, etc. Still does it. (And of course, Windows tells me that I might want to disable the driver in the STOP line, but um, I don't magically know how to look at hex and go "oh it's that driver!") So, if anyone has any suggestions of what might be wrong with his account, that would be awesome. The only thing I can think of is that I got a new monitor recently, but it's hard for me to say if that's somehow the problem because we so rarely used his account before then. I should probably add that I'm running Windows XP.

  19. Numbers

    Date: 10/04/05     Keywords: microsoft

Hey everyone I have an excel question...

Is there anyway to just make a list of numbers go all the way down the column without typing them?
For work I have to just have a column going down the left side from numbers 5170001 to 5179999 (which is obviously a lot of numbers to type) is there any microsoft office program that will just insert them all for me?

  20. MS Excel

    Date: 09/29/05     Keywords: no keywords

Hi, I have a question about Excel.

Is it possible to get the values in one column to arrange their order to match that of another column? This is made harder by the fact that some values are blank on column 2 and not all values in 1 are present in 2.

    Simple example:

    Column 1
    d
    f
    a
    g
    c
    b
    e

    Column 2
    e

    b

    f
    a

    g

    c

Now I want to use a function to get column 2 to arrange its values in the same order as column 1.

In reality I am trying to manipulate a dataset with 40,000 entries!

    Cheers.
