hey guys, i don't know if you remember me, but i had a problem with my computer and i could only use it in safe mode. nothing would come up on the screen. i have xp and the loading windows logo would show up, but before and after that, the screen was black.
well, i finally told my dad that there was something wrong with it (we're reallllly tight on money right now, so i didnt want to say anything to my parents)
my dad called my godfather (they met in the navy, and he used to fix the computers) and he said it wouldn't be the video card if the windows loading logo came up. he told me to try and upload windows 98 or 95, one of those because he thought it was an OS error. my dad did this while i was out, so i don't know what happened but something didnt work. my godfather suggested trying xp again, and my dad went out and bought xp, which is about a hundred bucks at costco today. it's my xmas gift.
i upgraded it, and it works perfectly fine now! :D i'm very happy to have my computer back :)

OMG, I'm so glad I found this community. I've got this charting question with Excel. I've got a set of data in a row. Is it possible for me to get Excel to pick out the top 5 values in this set and put them into a bar chart?
Thanks in advance and much love to whoever that can help me with this.

hey, thanks to the people that commented on my last post...
i found someone to fix it...
in an hour, the problem was fixed:
by removing the harddrive from the older computer, putting it on my newer computer...saving all the files and data my mom didn't want lost, and then putting the hardrive back, and running a FULL system restore.
the computer works better now that it ever did!
thanks for all the suggestions!!

hello...

well, here's the thing.. i have been dealing with this issue for about a week now..
maybe someone here knows something of anything that can help...
the irrelevent part? my little brother was on the family's computer running photoshop and internet explorer at the same time, and the computer crashed.
the important part? when we restarted it, there was an error message:
a problem with explorer & something about KERNEL32.DLL
many searches later..
and many attempts later,
we still haven't fixed that computer.
we have tried EVERYTHING. and even tried messing with it in safe mode, as some tutorial website said to do so.
so now.. not only is the KERNEL error continually popping up...
but now the computer is stuck in safe mode.
and yes..i have tried everything there too.
so why not system restore? because my parents are artists, and photos of their stuff is on the hard drive, stupidy not backed up... and we are too afraid certain things would be lost.
when it comes to computers, i usually lick a problem super fast...
but this is kicking my butt...
any suggestions?
anything?
please...help!!

XP Pro SP2 glitches

Hello people
I hope someone can gimme some fresh ideas, because i'm getting tired of this buggy subject stuff... I have two problems.
First:
there's comp with win98 at it, which is FULL of bugs after it was recovered from crashed HD. 2 of 3 partitions is under FAT32, 3rd partition was formatted under NTSF with XP Pro sp2 installed absolutely "from zero". It do loads into the safe mode, but gets struck with attemp for the first launch. I know there's conflict between 98 and XP, but they're in different partitions. Logs doesn't show anything susceptful, there's no hardware interrupts, only errors for comm things, because i load it without networking.
If this is because of an old hardware (usb and all) isn't it should show me some errors or anything?
Second:
There's another computer with subject on it, early there was working GPRS through generic IRDA and mobile phone. It WAS working, but then started with PPP errors, says, connection was interrupted. I was getting such an errors for a week, then it resumed working, then again stopped. Sometimes i can get connected but it even doesn't call for DNS servers.
I guessed it's something with my mobile operator, so i tryed 2 other operators with the same result. One of them DID worked for about a 20 minutes and then got down.
Then I guessed it something with my mobile phone itself, but another one didn't worked too! If all the operators and different phone didn't worked, means, it's something with my system?
I have PPC - it was adjusted for GPRS too, and now it also can't get access. So if any settings was changed with XP, i didn't touched PPC, andits settings was the same as when it worked for the last time.
Any ideas? Just anything?

hi. i juust found you guys (lj rules for communities) and i really need some help.
i have windows xp, and i've been having this problem for a while. when i start up my computer, once in a while, after the windows xp logo comes up (with the little blue bullet that goes across the middle of the screen) the screen doesn't click to the part where you choose the icon to log in. instead, the monitor makes no sound at all, and stays black. FOREVER. the way i would fix it..was just stalling it i guess. i would hold down the F8 button during startup, and choose the 'start windows from last working startup' (something like that) and it would work fine.
but i did something stupid, and experimented!
i let it start up normally this time, and when the screen turned black, i wanted to see if it would still work properly, incase it was just the monitor acting weird. so i pressed the up button, and pressed enter. (my name is the first on the log-in list) the noise that comes on when your desktop starts loading came on, but no picture. still black. i restarted and the same thing happened, and then i restarted again, and did the 'last working configuration' thing again, and it stayed black, because it loaded up last time! ugh, i made a big mistake.
do you think its the monitor or the computer?
i'm in safemode with networking right now, and it sucks big time, most of you probably know how safemode is, and it isn't fun! its (i think) 640x640 resolution, with (the worst part) 4 bit color! ahhh. its driving me nuts, and i need my computer to work.
any advice will help. i hope someone knows whats wrong.
thanks!

Excel Help!

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me out.
I'm dealing with over 4,500 rows of data and am trying to make life a little easier for myself. Is it possible to delete all rows that have a cell containing a specific value (or lack of)?
Some of the rows of data refer to experiments (I'm a geneticist) for which no result was obtained, so the result columns (which are E and K) are blank. How can I remove all such rows other than manually?
Thanks.

Anti-virus/firewall advice
Date: 11/23/05
Keywords: software, virus, spyware
I'm getting DSL, and I've been advised that I need to get serious about protecting my computer. I'm asking for recommendations for anti-virus/firewall/spyware software. Is there anything that does all three? It's always irritated me that I'm expected to buy three kinds of software.
Thanks,
Eric
