1. Help with new Mozilla?

    Date: 09/19/09     Keywords: no keywords

    .
I needed a new school program that requires IE, which I long ago took off my computer. The school IT guy said he'd put it on. To do so, he took Mozilla OFF!

When I demanded that it be replaced, he could only download 3.5.3. I had not upgraded from 2.something; I was quite happy with that version. Now, I'm going crazy. Right now, two specific problems.

The biggie is my menu bar. In Mozilla 2-whatever, the URLs I loaded stayed in the same place all the time. If I loaded in a certain order, I knew to look for personal stuff at the top, fanfiction in the middle, and business stuff at the bottom.

Now, my menu bar seems to have no rhyme or reason. It doesn't leave my URLs in one place. But it also does not move most-recently-used to the top, as IE does/used to. (Haven't used it in two years; not sure what it does now.) Nor does it align the URLs in alphabetical order.

In other words, when I look for a URL, I have no idea where it will be in the list, which is a great time-waster. Is there any way I can stabilize this? URLs staying where I put them is my preference, but alphabetical would be acceptable.

Second problem, not so big, but irritating. At the right edge of the toolbar is a window that shows various search engines. I don't want it. I was able to delete all the search engines except Wikipedia; it won't go. I managed to move the separation line over until the search window is very small, but I would like it gone. Under 'Customize Toolbar', it says 'You can add or remove items by dragging to or from the toolbars'. But it won't let me remove that search window, or the 'home' icon, which I also don't want.

Can anyone help? Thanks so much.

(PS if there's a way to take off 3.5.3 and put back 2.anything, I'd really appreciate some directions. Thanks again.)

  3. Symbols

    Date: 09/04/09     Keywords: no keywords

I had to redownload firefox due to having to get the computer wiped.

How can I make the symbols show up? They used to before.

My profile has chess pieces at the bottom but they show up as boxes to me now and any other kanji-like langusges show up as weird boxes too.

  5. help please? :)

    Date: 08/24/09     Keywords: virus

Feel free to delete if this isn't allowed. If this problem has already been solved, could I have a link to the solution?

Hello everyone, I installed Firefox a couple of months ago without administrator privileges (thanks to this tutorial). It functioned beautifully for a few months but out of nowhere, I recently came across a few problems.

    1. My Firefox pop-up blocker is on, but I keep getting random pop-ups from time to time. I already did a virus scan, uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox, and deleted old versions of Firefox, but it didn't do anything.

    2. Firefox won't load certain pages completely: such as my LJ friends list, my tumblr dashboard, facebook, list of youtube comments, etc. It says it's finished loading but only 3/4 of the page shows up, and I can't scroll further. It's quite annoying.

    screenshot:

(entry content/usernames censored for the privacy of the LJ user).

In the image, you can see I can't scroll any further, but my entire friends list page won't load (plus the link to view previous entries isn't visible).

Is there any way to fix this problem without the need for administrator rights? I already tried to find out the admin password, but nothing worked.

    Thank you! :)

  7. Mozilla seems to be controlling my fonts

    Date: 08/24/09     Keywords: css

I updated with the newest version yesterday and somehow, my fonts somehow got changed (everything's Arial Narrow. And small. SO small) and I can't make them revert to their original fonts (esp the ones I use for livejournal). I tried to change my CSS codes, but mozilla seems to be overriding it (fonts for my eljay are: helvetica and georgia for the links). I tried to change the font options in the tools, but it's either nothing happens (for eljay) or the font's are bit too big. -_-

Does anyone else have a problem like this?

  8. Extension Comms?

    Date: 08/19/09     Keywords: no keywords

Just a random question: are there any comms on LJ where you can post searching for an extension? Such as "I'm looking for an extension to help me do X. It'd be cool if it could do Y also, but that's not a deal-breaker. Anyone know of such a beast?"

  11. Clear Private Data

    Date: 03/12/09     Keywords: no keywords

Does anyone know exactly how good Firefox's "Clear Private Data" is? I bought a netbook, used it for a few days and realised it was too small for me to use, and so am returning it to the shop (they have confirmed that it is okay for me to return it). Will "Clear Private Data" (plus uninstalling Firefox and doing the boot menu "restore to factory settings" option) get rid of my data well enough to avoid me being a) hacked, b) robbed (paypal), or c) pilloried in the street for being a closet tweepop fan? If not, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to ensure that the machine is clean when I return it?

  12. Thunderbird issues

    Date: 02/21/09     Keywords: web

(directed here by the lovely folks at '[info]'ljgenie)

I've been using Mozilla Thunderbird on this laptop since I first got it. I transferred some of the settings over from my old Eudora account, and I thought I had everything set up just fine and dandy...

...but there are roughly half a dozen emails from last March (when I acquired the machine) that refuse to stay deleted. I've emptied my trash. I've emptied the Recycle Bin on the laptop. I've deleted every single inbox.msf file I could find - twice. I found that I had two sets of preferences for the same email account; I deleted the extraneous one. I've accessed the email accounts in question through their respective webmail interfaces, and these messages no longer exist on the server. But if something happens to interrupt the mail retrieval sequence, in they come again.

Will someone not rid me of this meddlesome priest email?

  13. ff3's sucky awesome bar

    Date: 02/01/09     Keywords: browser

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but personally I HATE Firefox 3's so-called "awesome bar". It's totally not awesome. :/

Therefore I thought I'd share what I did to make the URL bar more like it was in Firefox 2.

    1. First I installed oldbar.
    2. Then I typed in about:config in the address bar, and "urlbar" in the filter.
    3. I set browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped to true so it does NOT display things from my bookmarks or my history, and browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 20 just 'cause I only want 20 urls showing in the address bar.
    The end.

    Thoughts, suggestions, & opinions welcome.

  14. Friendslist - Firefox cache problem with videos?

    Date: 01/26/09     Keywords: no keywords

    Hey all :)

I have a question or well, it's rather an annoyance.

When I reload my friendspage and someone posted a youtube video, I often see a previously posted video instead of the new one. When I go to the individual sites of the entry, I see the correct video. I guess this has something to do with the cache, but I'm not sure how to work around that without emptying my cache again and again. Firefox probably thinks that as it's always the "same" page I'm reloading, the videos on it must be old ones and pulls them from the cache and doesn't check if they are new?

Also, I happen to have a video on my flist that keeps autoplaying and it's soooo annoying, is there a way to stop that?

    Thanks for any help!

  15. Problems loading LJ after installing FF3

    Date: 01/26/09     Keywords: no keywords

After installing Firefox 3 a couple of days ago I've had problems with loading LJ. The pages look like they have finished loading (ie. all pictures, icons, text, etc. seem complete) but the little status wheel icon thingy on each tab never stops, as if it was still loading something. This only happens with LJ pages, not on any other sites.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

  16. Cookies help

Date: 01/20/09     Keywords: browser, web, yahoo

My Firefox recently, yesterday, shit itself and refuses to store my cookies. It deleted all my cookies for staying logged into websites, all my blogs and e-mail sites, etc. I put them in and when I close and reopen the browser they are forgotten.
    Here are the details:

-I'm running FF3 on Windows XP Home. I've had M3 for months now.
-Recently I installed WeatherWatcherLive and Peer Guardian2. I have since uninstalled PeerGuardian2 and restarted the system to no avail.

-I logged on yesterday to find all my sites had logged me off, but the saved passwords and saved form data I had for them were still there.
-The settings are still the same, 'keep cookies until they expire' when I close FF and open it again all the cookies are gone.

-I have attempted to click all the "keep me logged in" options but they did nothing. In fact, I'm looking at the page info for my yahoo and it's telling me that I haven't visited the page before today, when I just signed in 4 minutes ago and then closed the browser.

-I looked it up and tried to recover a lost profile; that failed. Then I tried starting in Safe Mode and tell it to begin with original settings; that failed too.

I'm hoping something can be done short of a clean reinstall.
    Help please, if you can.

  17. text version

    Date: 01/14/09     Keywords: browser

For some time now I've been curious how difficult it would be to use the Mozilla codebase to create a terminal-friendly text-mode browser. Obviously capabilities would be limited (single-size fixed-width font, 16 colors at most, etc) but surely it is possible...in theory.

I once asked Thomas Dickey about it, since he has oodles of experience with ncurses and lynx. He agreed it may be doable, providing there are interfaces that don't rely on pixel-level positioning and such. I have no idea about that.

  18. Firefox 3 Crashing?

    Date: 01/05/09     Keywords: browser, google

I've tried searching on-line, but nothing has helped so I'm hoping someone hear has an answer.

My Firefox at home keep crashing.  I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason for it -- it's not certain sites, it's not the number of tabs I have open, but in the course of an hour, it will usually crash 2-3 times.  I uninstalled and reinstalled 3.0, in case something funky had happened there, but no luck.  My b/f has the same problem with his as well.

Oddly, I have 3.0 at work and have yet to encounter any issues there (and I have more add-ons at work than at home).  My b/f went back to 2.0 at work and hasn't had any issues, but one of his employees is experiencing the same crash issues with 3.0.  I run on Xp at home, and Windows 2000 at work, in case it's abrowser compatibility thing.

Is there any way to troubleshoot this or is there a history on this somewhere?  My google-fu is failing me mightily, and I much prefer Firefox to other browsers out there.

  19. sharing a profile but not chrome

    Date: 01/01/09     Keywords: css

Hi, I'm trying to share my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles between two operating systems. The sharing won't be a problem once I've created an area writable by both OSes; the problem is, in one I need a userchrome.css file in FF/Thunderbird in order to make the menu and status bars display correctly, and in the other operating system, I don't have a userchrome.css on either FF or Thunderbird. Is there a way to share a profile but have one operating system using a userchrome.css file, and the other operating system not? It's possible if I apply the userchrome.css file to both operating systems it'll be okay, but I suspect it will break parts of the display in the one which didn't need it.
