1. XP SP 2

Date: 06/09/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, security

I uninstalled WinXP Service Pack 2 yesterday, because it was cheaper than buying more RAM (256MB seems to be too little?), and now the whole system runs much faster (ie I no longer have to log on and then go and put the kettle on while I wait for everything to boot up), which was the desired effect.
But am I missing anything MAJOR by not having SP2? The only noticeable differences were the Security Centre (but I use Norton anyway) and the Bluetooth software (but I already had Bluetooth software installed). Oh and the 'Set Program Access Defaults' option has disappeared from the Star Menu, but I can live without that

    Any thoughts?

  3. Zone Alarm woes and disappering programs (I think)

Date: 06/11/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, asp, security

I just updated to the newest version of Zone Alarm Security Suite. I've been having issues with it since. I've been trying to uninstall the program but that's been a bust so far as I keep getting this error message:

TrueVector Internet Monitor was not uninstalled.
The uninstaller was not able to stop the True Vector software services. This will happen if other software is using the True Vector Engine.

To uninstall make sure all other True Vector based programs have been closed.

Another problem that I am having is that my add/remove program list is acting all wonky. Instead of regular program names such as Nero burning rom and Winamp, it's being populated by aspi, CCHelp, CCScore, etc.

I would really appreciate it if anyone out there would help me out.

It's also my first post here so hello ^^

[edit]When I try to start up ZA, this error pops up.

    vsmon.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x01cc2ccd" referenced memory at "0x00000018".

  5. Can you hide your personal information on the web?

Date: 06/11/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: security, web

A client was surprised that I could legally find out a lot of personal information about him on the web. Without paying a penny, I found his address, phone number and even his age. In fact if I wanted his financial profile and any legal information trail on him, I could get that too easily (however it might cost me a small fee)

He asked me if there is anyway to legally stop people from looking up such personal information? After researching this, I saw that there were very few options here. These are the conclusions I found that are legal.

    1. You can get a court or executive order to seal your records. Even if this could somehow be justified, it still wouldn't stop past leaks. Usually this can only be justified under an extreme situation, and the odds of even a clever lawyer getting this done are probably against it. Usually this can only be justified if it can be shown that your very life depends on blocking future leaks. Even if this is done, it's not at all foolproof.
    2. Even the director of the FBI can't stop his information from spreading on the web. It's just in too many places and there seems to be no way to block them all.
    3. You can legally change your identity. You can even legally create a second identity with a second Social Security number and separate drivers license. This still doesn't stop past leaks. Eventually a information trail will exist on your new identity though. To effectively hide, you'd have to change your identity, move, and change all your contact information (because you can be traced through contact information). There would still be a legal records linking your aliases though and it would still be possible to trace a person through them. This would still not stop past leaks on your old identity.

So the short answer is, if a person is determined to find a lot of information about you, there is nothing you can do about.

    Alllllllllllllllllllllrighty-then...

Please forgive me... the results list is a bit long...

For a little while now, my computer has refused to enter Standby or Shut Down completely. In both cases, it will try to do one of the two, and then freeze. It is becoming highly annoying. I have WinXP - SP2. I have Norton Internet Security 2005, Norton Systemworks 2005, and Norton GoBack 4.0. I suspect it might be one of these, seeing as it started happening shortly after they were installed. I also have Ad-Aware SE Professional 1.06r1, Spybot S&D 1.4, HiackThis v1.99.1, and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 (which is going to expire at the end of July...). They have detected the following:

  10. password stealing webmail login?

Date: 06/16/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: security, web, yahoo, ebay

The bookmark that takes me to my webmail (yahoo) was directing me to www.login.yahoo.com but I had to type my password in every time I opened it (previously I would only have to type it in once every 24 hours). I didn't think much of it, Yahoo's been changing some stuff around so I thought it might just be a temporary change.
Today it kept saying my password/username wasn't correct when I was *sure* I typed it in correctly. It asked me to retype my password as well as my username and put in some scrambled letters and numbers in an image - a security feature. I do it and I'm in my email.

Things are seeming a bit fishy so I checked the url and it was www.login.yahoo.com so I went to www.yahoo.com and clicked the "check mail" link and was directed to www.mail.yahoo.com. So what is www.login.yahoo.com??? I'm thinking my password and username were stolen and perhaps I've got someone going through my email, possibly looking for ebay passwords.

    Thoughts?

After weeks of delays, version 8.01 has finally been released.

It's worth getting for the following reasons (there are, of course, many others):

    • It contains several security fixes.
    • It finally adds enough support for XmlHttpRequest such that LiveJournal's nifty javascript comment handling stuff works.

  19. Secure Online storage - read/write access for set user group

Date: 06/22/05 (Software)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, security, web, linux, yahoo

I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.
    ideas have included:

Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want

any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.
