Device driver prevents sleep mode
Date: 07/17/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: software
I am tired of having to turn my computer on and off because it can't go into sleep or hibernate. After a period of inactivity, I get a box with this error message: "The device driver for the 'Communications Port (COM1)'device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."
COM1 is where the docking port for my Palm IIIx (stop snickering; there's no point in upgrading something that works just fine and does what I need!). I've tried removing the docking port, removing the port and un-installing the software - any combination you can imagine, with full shutdowns in between, and also reinstalling the Palm III software. Same message. Is there something in a registry I need to kill? If I will have to give up the Palm backup, I'm willing to do that just so I don't go through a half a dozen shutdowns a day to keep the heat down. As it is, the power supply is failing and will have to be replaced very soon. But simply un-installing the program with "Remove Program" doesn't help.
I'm on a custom built computer running Win XP. Tell me if you need hardware details and I"ll ferret them out, but this seems to be a software issue. Thanks for any help you can give.

data managment?

(WebDesign) Keywords: php, software, web, shopping
can anyone recommend a good php script or program that would be good for the following?:
i want to create a website that has a section for me to post recipes. the index page for the recipe sections, i want to be thumbnail's of a photo of each recipe (instead of just a text link - see FIGURE A). when you click the thumbnail, i want it to go to a page where i can put text and photos for the actual recipe page. i want to be able to categorize the recipes on the index page, so when i enter them, they appear in the correct section on the index page.. and only thumbnails for the most recent 4 or 5 recipes show on the index page. if you click on the "view more" button, or the category title, it takes you to another index type page with thumbnails of all of the recipes in that category (see FIGURE B).
FIGURE A:
FIGURE B:
i've worked a bit with customizing php (shopping carts), and i was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction to a good script or data entry program that might be able to help me to achieve this. i want to do it in php so i can easily update recipes, etc. i might eventually incorperate the same software/script to display crafts and projects.

Laptop for sale.
Date: 07/28/06
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: software
I'm selling my laptop. My lovely, lovely Dell Latitude D600. I realized that with me getting a brand-new D620 for work in a few weeks, and having an iBook, a desktop, a PocketPC, and use of Mike's PowerBook and desktop when necessary, I don't really need my Latitude anymore.
It's got a 1.6GHz Centrino, Intel 2200 B/G wireless (A+ wireless card), 768MB DDR RAM, DVD/CD-RW, SXGA+ 14.1" display (1400x1050 - amazing resolution for gaming and coding and stuff), 40GB Toshiba 5200rpm HDD (still has at least a year on the warranty), gigabit ethernet, etc. Most of the components are pretty dang new - the top casing is all new, the keyboard was just recently replaced, the hard drive is newer (I had to RMA it after I dropped my laptop while it was on). Comes with Windows XP/Pro SP1 and all the original drivers/software CDs.
Still has one year of CompleteCare/Next Business Day warranty, which I can transfer to whoever buys it. This is an A+ warranty that covers any kind damage except fire, theft, and that which is blatantly obvious it was deliberate. The hard drive has its own warranty through Toshiba and doesn't require transfer of warranty - it's tied to the drive's serial number.
I'd like to get around $600 for it, plus shipping. If you're interested, comment or email me at shifuimam AT gmail DOT com. It's been taken care of extremely well. I will also include a microfiber screen protector that you can place between the display and the keyboard when the laptop is closed. The battery is new and can last for somewhere around four hours without wireless on and lowered screen brightness (I think - don't hold me to that).
If this post is inappropriate, please remove it or tell me to remove it.
