Free\Open Source Reporting?
Date: 08/03/06
(C Sharp) Keywords: software, google
Can anyone recommend a reasonably decent free (preferably open source) reporting package (think crystal reports) that I can use with C#?
My google-fu doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere with this.
Failing that, can anyone recommend some other reporting software that is reasonably priced? I am using an Express Edition of Visual Studio, and unless I'm missing something, it doesn't include Crystal Reports.

Photo Assembly Software
Date: 08/05/06
(Software) Keywords: software
Hi folks,
I'm looking for some software to make light work of assembling various photos to print on an A4 sheet. Some of the photos may overlap, and I'm not worried about borders on the photos. Similar to those photo montages you can assemble manually in a clip frame. Of course I can do this in things like PaintShopPro and Photoshop, but as far as I'm aware this'll be a little more difficult in terms of the required editing and page sizing.
HP printers had some software that did something like this, but the photos would have large borders so isn't quite suitable.
Any recommendations?

Question about the curl library
Date: 08/16/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, software, web, hosting
I'm working on an open source project called Appleseed, which requires server-to-server communication.
I'm trying to decide whether I should roll my own classes using internal PHP functions like stream_context_create (), or if I should use the CURL library.
I've benchmarked them both, and the CURL library is really close to the raw functions as far as speed goes.
Does anybody have any recommendations? The only reason I'm hesitant about CURL is that I really want this software to be very easy to install, even on a typical $9 a month php hosting account.
Considering that, how widespread is CURL support amongst php webhosts?
Also, if anybody has rolled their own functions before, how difficult can it be? I'll mostly just be transferring data between servers, nothing too complicated. Maybe CURL is overkill for that?
Thanks!

Hi
Date: 08/21/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, software, html, asp
Hi folks. I'm looking for a way to convert word documents to html using PHP. I've seen this done with various services, like gmail (using whatever it is they use) and monster.com (using asp) and some others, and I was wondering if there was a way to do that in PHP. Most of the stuff I've found is just some software that makes you do it manually, not meant for using as a library. So, anyways, I know this can be done, I'm just wondering what I can use to do it. Thanks for any info.

Is Dreamhost still having email/server issues & brown outs?
Date: 08/21/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: cms, software
I'm asking because I deliberated for a while and finally signed up with www.bluehost.com last Sunday but I checked out Dreamhost's One-Click installs and they seem to be better maintained than Bluehost's. Apparently this is because BlueHost uses the Fantastico install setup which is notorious for being one or two versions behind.
I'm particularly interested Dreamhost's Joomla & ActiveCollab (www.activecollab.com) installs. ActiveCollab would be like a free/open-Source version of 37Signals' Basecamp (www.basecamphq.com) project management and billing software. That alone would save me tonnes of time and money. I need the Joomla or Drupal stuff for a CMS I need to set up for a new client.
Has anyone here used their One-Click installs and how good are they? What keeps you at DreamHost and are the outages really that bad? I think I may switch this weeked and have my money refunded by BlueHost but would like the extra assurance from actual users.
Thanks.

Anyone tried "On The Job" time billing/tracking software? If not, what do you use?
Date: 08/22/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: software, web
I was thinking of using On The Job as my time billing/tracking application. It's here: http://www.stuntsoftware.com/OnTheJob/
If you do not use this particular application, what do you use? I'm wondering because I'm still looking for a good one that's vaguely simple to use and tallys well. At one point I was testing iBiz and ProjectTimer but put them to rest for a while. Right now my solution is to manually track my time and invoice clients using the web app SideJobTrack: http://www.sidejobtrack.com. It's free and good.
On The Job seems like a balance between manual and the full blown invoicing/tracking of iBiz. Others have suggested using iRatchet. I'm trying to figure if I need the complexity right now.
I should add that almost all of my projects are billed as flat project fees. SideJobTrack allows a user to bill flat project fees as percentages (ex: 40%/30%/30%). I'm actualy now wondering how a time tracking/billing app would help me...at least it can also tally credits and expenses. But so can SideJobTrack. Maybe the app will let me notice how much time/money I'm burning on a particular section of project before moving to another part. It would put real numbers to your time or dawdling.
Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks.
