The real issue in the software patent fight
Date: 10/15/07

Good software is complicated, and patent law has no way to deal with this complexity.

Resizing all image files in subfolders
Date: 10/18/07
(IT Professionals) Keywords: software
I have roughly 100GB-200GB of image files that are around 1mb each, which needs to be resized automagically to roughly 1024x768 pixels.
Would anyone have a suggestions on what software I can do this without it crashing.
The program needs to do this recursively on subfolders.

IP firm sued, settled with Novell on different patent in August
Date: 10/18/07
(Open Source) Keywords: software, technology
The IP firm that filed patent litigation against Red Hat and Novell mounted legal threats against many other U.S. software companies in 2007 including Oracle, SAP, Computer Associates, EMC, Adobe, Autodesk, Apple, SPSS — and Novell.
That’s right. In late August, the Newport Beach, Calif. –based Acacia Technology Licensing’ subsidiary Disc Link Corp. [...]

Tips on Configuring (A)DSL Modems

(Java Web) Keywords: software
Modern DSL modems by default allows you to establish a DSL link through them to provide internet connectivity. The actual connection is handled by software running on your computer. The downside is that the client side software consumes your precious CPU cycles. Also the internet connectivity of your internal network is now dependent on a [...]

Too late to define an Internet service mark?
Date: 10/21/07
(Open Source) Keywords: software
If private networks can decide what software they will support, and what sites you can see, without telling you, and still be called Internet services, the word loses its meaning, it becomes generic, it becomes internet, and we're back to where we were 20 years ago, when proprietary X.25 networks ruled and you only were able to use the services created and defined by CompuServe or GEnie.

Late night baseball games, Microsoft concessions evoke big yawns at open source water cooler

Microsoft’s agreement to provide full technical documentation – and lower royalties – on its software protocols is a big yawn to the open source community, developers and consultants say.
No surprise. Since its battle with the European commission began almost a decade ago, web services have rendered such protocol licensing a dinosaur of the past. [...]

Stuff working in safe mde, not in normal.
Date: 10/23/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, browser, java, security, virus, antivirus, spyware, yahoo, microsoft, google
I keep having bizarre computer problems, yet I can't detect any viruses, and the only spyware I had was a couple tracking cookies I get from time to time and I deleted them.
Earlier Word wouldn't open, now it will. Sometimes Spybot and Ad-aware will open, sometimes not. Semagic won't open, I get an error message that says "Can't enumerate device." I've gotten the same error when trying to open Word, but now it works.
And sometimes the things that won't open give me an error message that there is not enough memory to run it, even though I have plenty and recently defragged.
I started my computer in safe mode and everything was peachy. I opened Fix-it Utilities, ran some scans and a registry de-frag, as well as running ad-aware and spybot again. All clean. Restarted the computer in normal and tried to open Fix-it, just to test. Still doesn't work. Neither does Semagic and a couple other random things. And randomly, my internet browser fails. Weather I'm in Opera, IE, or Firefox...they all do it. Half the text and images vanish, some look like they are on top of each other. I don't understand.
I'm pretty sure it must be one thing causing all of this, because it all started two days ago together.
Any ideas?
This is on an HP PC with Windows XP by the way.

Not a computer help question, more of an iPod help question
Date: 10/29/07
(Computer Help) Keywords: software
I have a 5th Generation iPod. Up until now it has worked fine. I was listening to it and it froze out of the blue. I waited a couple of seconds to be sure it was frozen then I reset it. It reset with no problems and I started to listen to my music again. All of a sudden the song stopped. I grabbed my ipod and looked at it and saw the Apple icon. My ipod continues to restart. I've put it to sleep and locked the hold button and it still restarts. The ipod software is up to date and when I connect it to a Mac or PC it shows up and the songs play with no problems. I have no idea what to do. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
