I'm trying to uninstall Windows XP from my sister in law's computer because she got a virus on it.  It keeps saying that I have no adminstrative authority, and won't let me into control panel, or add remove programs.

I need directions on how to uninstall everything on the hard drive before Windows starts so that I can reinstall XP (using disk) and some antivirus software.

Date: 11/17/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

Ok, so I got an email about updating to the new and improved Zune software... so I did... and now it's screwed.

I just updated my software, everything is current windows wise, and when I run the software it's a bunch of lines and pink and grey fuzz, the page won't load and it doesn't work.

you can view it here to see what it's doing -

    How do I fix this?

Someone on the zune message board suggested updating my driver.. but I seem to have the most recent one for the VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP driver already. :( there seems to be a lot of problems with the new zune software but only one other person has had it do this so far and they haven't figured it out either.

  9. Fastest Phenom quad core beaten by slowest Core 2 Quad

Date: 11/19/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: php, software, html, asp, web

When quad-cores collide: AMD Phenom vs Intel Core 2 Quad
    http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=10427

"We can debate all day whether the majority of consumer software is threaded enough to take advantage of four execution cores, but the immutable fact remains that AMD's fastest quad-core offering is slower than Intel's slowest..."

"...AMD's nascent Phenom also suffers under the considerable yoke of Intel's Core 2 Quad 6600 pricing, which at £165 for a hugely-overclockable 2.4GHz part is something of a bargain. AMD, though, is pitching its slightly underperforming quad-core part at roughly the same price."

AMD's Phenom Unveiled: A Somber Farewell to K8
    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3153&p=1
The problem is, and I hate to ruin the surprise here, Phenom isn't faster than Intel's Core 2 Quad clock for clock. In other words, a 2.3GHz Phenom 9600 will set you back at least $283 and it's slower than a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Quad Q6600, which will only cost you $269.

    Phenom 13.5% Slower Than Intel's Q6600
    http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/19/the_spider_weaves_its_web/page22.html

It's really not a close fight between AMD and Intel at this point. "Steamroll" would be an apt description of the situation.

  11. Help Desk software

Date: 11/20/07 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: software, web, microsoft

    Hello,
I work for a fairly large university, and we're in the market for some new
help desk software. We're currently using a free(?) software package called
SomeHelp based on Microsoft Access. We local IT grunts like it for what it
is, but the big man upstairs does not and our users can't access it.

    Here's what we need:
-An interface, preferably web-based, where users can submit support tickets.
    Brownie points for user-friendliness.
-An inventory system, where we can track our assets and their maintenance
history, and perhaps some kind of report on them (the boss wasn't specific)
-A product where reliable and dedicated support is available if necessary
-LDAP connectivity is a plus but not a requirement

The product does not necessarily have to be free, though it can't be too
costly. We were recently eyeballing Track-It, but the manager did not like
the $8000 a year price-tag. He does not like Remedy for some reason (didn't
ask why). I got a copy of Bugzilla running locally, but getting it to
behave like helpdesk software is tricky; I might understand it, but our
users definitely will not. Any suggestions? Thank you all.

    ~Elliot

  13. Thunderbird - On a Mac - HTML Emails

Date: 11/21/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, html

Has anyone had experience with sending out HTML emails on Thunderbird for Mac?

I downloaded Thunderbird specifically so I would be able to do this. I have yet to successfully do it. I see some simple buttons to insert pictures, change font, etc., but what I actually want to do is insert my own code -- I've already designed the email itself as a separate HTML page.

When I do that, it just sends the whole thing as plain text. Tags and all.

It seems like it may be a Thunderbird-for-Mac thing -- my boyfriend just downloaded Thunderbird onto his windows machine and said that it looks completely different. He is trying to send my HTML email to me now, as a test.

Please don't respond just to tell me why I shouldn't be sending HTML anyway. This is for a client who specifically wants a HTML email blast. They have their own software, but I'd like to be able to send myself a test email in Thunderbird. I really just need to know how to do it, not to be scolded for doing it.

    Thanks.

  14. Backup

Date: 11/22/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software

I have 3 full 500GB hard drives that I would like to backup. What is the best compression ratio that I can get with disk imaging backup software? If possible, I would like to avoid having to buy 1500GB of storage to back the drives up, so I do not want to make clones. What I would like to do is make a disk image of each drive and compress the image so I can store it in a smaller space and then unzip it if the need ever arises. If I could get say a 1-to-5 compression ration, I could make a 100GB disk image of each of the 500GB hard drives, and store the 3 100GB disk images on just one 320GB hard drive. Is this possible? What type of compression can you expect using disk imaging to backup a hard drive? Are there any other space-saving alternatives for backing up data?

I know some of you are fabulous bloggers.  Have any of you found blogging software that allows threads (ie instead of just comments to the original post, they can or I can respond to them directly)?  What about blogging software that automatically updates the blog, like for example, a mirror like if I post in livejournal for example, the post would also automatically be made in a seperate blog outside of livejournal.  Frankly, I wanted to use livejournal for my blog, but they don't allow non-members to comment except anonymously and I don't want my friends outside of livejournal to have to make anonymous comments.
