Help with AIM virus, Please!
Date: 05/01/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: browser, virus, web
Someone on my AIM buddy list got a virus that is sending itself in link form to people on her buddy list, including me. When I clicked on the link, my AVG and firewall both claimed to have protected me from it, and did not allow it to open. But, now when I try to open my web browser on that computer (my laptop), I get re-directed to what looks like some sort of fake AIM page that says it cannot load correctly or some BS. And when I try to go to any other site, it tells me the page cannot be displayed (I am using my desktop computer to post this, as I can't get to any webpages on that one). HELP! Please!
Also, I've just discovered that I can't connect to AIM on that computer now either. It stays stuck on the "connecting" stage and doesn't move. So I have removed my browser (firefox), but the default browser (IE) does the same thing. Also, I have removed AIM.
EDIT: All fixed! Thanks battie42!

Tired
Date: 05/03/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: security, virus
I am tired of trying to figure out what in the computer industry I want to do. When I ask for advice, my profs tell me to do in computers what interests you.
So, when I ask questions about security, virus protection, why virus protection is so re-active and not pro-active, why the school seems to leave such HUGE holes open in there network ( and I see these and I have only really been "into" computers for 2 semesters, but reading for a year or so)
Case in point, networking class. My prof is lecturing on how to install a windows OS. (Snooze time) Then he gets to the admin settings, and sets the one user as admin and one user as a limited user. Ok, I think, now talk about the Admin setting you get in safe mode......waiting...waiting......next topic. GREAT, I raise my hand, and ask.
"No we set that already"
No you didnt"
Yes I did, see it here, see how it says ADMIN"
"Yes, I see that but what happens when you start in safe mode and the Admin account is there with no password?"
"That isn't the case, moving on"
So, on our 15 min break I go up, restart the computer in safe mode, and leave it there, his admin, and the OTHER admin. He was shocked.........and all I can think is, great here comes the comment I get all the time.
Prof.."I have to keep my eye on you, are you some sort of hacker?"
NO idiot, I just read, and want to know what people know that exploit the system, and shouldn't you think the same way?????
sigh.......

System restore & Backup (Windows xp)
Date: 05/10/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: software, virus, spyware
Question #1:
Hi I have windowsxp and spyware (there is also probably a virus--I found a trojan.). I want to reformat my harddrive. How do I do that? Is "reformatting" the same as "system restore"? This system restore is when the computer restores the system to a previous period. If I restore it to the time before the spyware came up, will the problem be fixed?
I can't find reformat in the "help" on my computer, and we don't have the windowsxp software cd. So, I'm considering that "system restore" is better because it won't delete programs I want to keep, like Windows Movie Maker and some sound programs.
Question #2:
Can I backup programs (and not need the windowsxp software cd)? For example, Windows Movie maker. Would I need to have the "installer" of this program? (I don't have it, I suppose.)

Mozilla Suite Installer Fails?
Date: 05/16/05
(Mozilla) Keywords: virus, spyware
I'm happily using FireFox, but I need the composer functions from the full Mozilla suite.
I went and downloaded the newest Suite package from mozilla.org, but when I try to run the executable, it gets past extracting the XPI files and simply disappears - no error messages or anything! I also tried downloading the installer stub, but it flashes on the screen and disappears instantly...
I am running FireFox with absolutely no problems, and have had no other problems with my system. I'm running XP Pro SP2 on an Athlon64 3500+ with 1gig of ram. Spyware/Virus FREE.
Anybody know where I might look to solve this problem? I really need composer!
EDIT
Bugzilla to the rescue! I was bitten by a "long-standing bug": Installer exits with no error after unpacking files - problem with TMP environment var
I thought at first "But I don't have a space in my tmp environment var" (which is how the example works..).. But then I realized that the default tmp is under the "Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\tmp\" directory. So I looked there, and sure enough, there was a file left over from an installer months ago under "Documents and Settings\Username\" and the file's name was "local"... fits the bug exactly.
Deleting the file allowed the Mozilla suite installer to function. YAY!...
Anyway, I just edited this post to include this info in case anyone else runs across it.

AVG virus scan result. What does it mean?
Date: 05/21/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus
An AVG virus scan turned up three files with their status "changed".
My problem is that I don't have a clue as to what this actually mean, and the Help-option isn't being particularly helpful.
They look to me as system-files of a kind so I don't dare delete them, if that's even nessecary.
Should I try to re-install? Just leave it? Send out for a pizza?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Ads345
Date: 05/29/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus, web, spyware
I used to have a problem with Ads234, I thought I had fixed it... but then it mutated into Ads345. Frequently, when I click a link I get redirected to an Ads345 website. The URL will say "http://www.ads345.com/requesturl=where I wanted to go" and I can just cick "skip" to get past it... but this has gone on for months and months, I can't seem to get rid of it! I use virus/adware/spyware scanners religiously (Norton, AdAware, and Spybot). I've tried deleteing the "key" or whatever. But it's still there! And midAdle even showed up on my programs list, but it won't let me remove it. Help?
