1. Quick question.

    Date: 11/18/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

I've finally decided to make good on my promise of updating my website and perhaps even moving it to a new location.

So what's a good free web site host/provider with smaller, not so obviously annoying ads for the time being until I'm ready/comfortable with moving onto a domain?

  3. include paths...

Date: 11/20/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web

Ok, I'm not understanding how this works.

    I have a file called index.php

Fine, that works from the root of the web directory.
    As does this images/index.php

But what happens when this is the case includes/auth.php

How does index.php and images/index.php know how to deal with logger, and auth.php for that matter?

I guess I want to know how to set these without including the full unix path.

Date: 11/22/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

I am buiding a website for someone who makes movies and had a few questions.

These movies are about a gig download, is there a way it can download parts, play while downloading more? Like the way youtube.com does? What type of coding does that require?

Also if we want them to download it to their computer how do i get it so the save as window comes up so you do not have to right click and hit "save target as..."

    thanks in advance

  6. Tableless Sites...

Date: 11/22/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, web

ok this may seem like a silly question but I'm gonna ask it anyways.

How do people make tableless websites?

I dont know much about XHTML or CSS at the moment but I'm mostly working using Dreamweaver MX 2004. Yeah i know its old but I havent had a reason to upgrade it yet but if this XHTML and CSS thing is in it then I will probably have too. Can anybody point me in the right direction on this?

    thanks

  7. Will turning on SSL affect my scripts?

Date: 11/23/06 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, web, apache

    Hello,

I've got a website that I developed in PHP and it connects to an oracle db. I'm running it in an environment with Apache Tomcat....

My question is, if I activate SSL for Tomcat...will this affect the scripts I've already written? In other words, will I have to rewrite my scripts in order to have the site run properly with SSL? Or does turning on the SSL do nothing to my code...

    Cheers,
    Mags

Ok, hopefully I can explain this clear enough...what I'm trying to do it post these banners actually on my music myspace page to let other people use to put on their website. What I was wanting to do is to create that little box that has the code so they can just copy/paste the code so they can easily add it to their page. Please help! I've been searching on how to do that but I cant find it...probably because I dont know the technical term for it. Thank you!!!

    STARCATS.CO.UK is for sale.

CLICK HERE for more info and placing bids.

Yes, my dear Star Cats fans, it´s the end of an era, but me and my kitties haven´t lived in the UK for 3 years now and don´t intend to return, and the Star Cats site has already migrated to become the all new Haus von Fluffenstein.

If you are interested or know anyone who would be, please place your bids.

The name would be great for a pet shop or cat charity site for example. Of course, if someone can and wants to afford it for a personal website, they are welcome too! :)

  15. Dropped Frames on Web Encoding

Date: 11/28/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

I'm using Sorenson Squeeze Compression Studio on a Mac for some video encoding. Using the ON2 VP6 compressor (as opposed to the Sorenson Spark), I'm encoding movies into Flash for playback on the Web.

    That's not the problem.

The problem is that I find the movies to be stuttering (frame rates dropping) as the movie plays on. When I encoded them, I opted to allow frames to drop to keep the audio going, so that is to be expected. What I'm not getting is the concept behind the flash architecture that would cause the stuttering.

    Why?

Because I'm viewing these locally before they go live; so I know it's not a bandwidth issue. I've adjusted the data rate to a respectable 400 kilobits/sec.

It may be the computer I'm playing it back on (AMD 1.4Ghz, 1GB RAM), but I'm wondering if there is a fundamental way Flash uses a web browser for display that is causing my encodes to bottom out.

    Thanks all!

  17. Text rendering in Firefox

Date: 11/29/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

I'm using Firefox 2.0 and IE7 mainly for my web development needs. I can't help but notice that the text in Firefox looks, for lack of a better word, crappy. The text in IE7 looks anti-aliased, while in FF the same text appears to be more pixelated. Why is this? Someone told me there was a setting in Firefox somewhere to change this, but I've yet to come across it. Thanks!

  20. Background

Date: 11/30/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, web

Hey guys, I'm redoing the layout of my website. I'm trying to do everything in divs (instead of tables), and there's one situation I don't know how to get around: a variable-sized box with a graphical border and graphical corners.

This is what I'm doing right now, and although the images will probably change, I'm interested in using this kind of background.

    A bunch of text.
    Stretches nicely.
Just a bunch of gif images.

This is a 3x3 table with the content being in the center. I used HTML for this background, but that's not the issue, since I would do it in CSS if I did it this way.

So my question is, can this same type of background be done without tables, and without using 8 divs or so?
