1. Calling ASP2 applications

Date: 01/03/06 (SQL Server)    Keywords: asp, web

How do I instance an ASP2 application from a client machine from within the firewall? Despite that, I wrote it in Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition, whenever I attempt, it tried to read it as if I wrote it for .Net framework 1.1 and not 2.0. I am calling it over HTTP (i.e., HTTP://pjohnson/website1/default.aspx) where the application resides in a folder in WWWRoot.

Well it seems that this journal community has not communed for quite some time.
almost a year since the last post by me.
you know you can post to this as well, all you other members :).
well bidness has slowed down alot in this valley for custom web based apps so i have gone back to building custom homes for a while.
its nice, but it can be a pain in the back to go to that from sitting in a nice leather executive to building custom made homes for people.
well as that is the case, i have been out of the loop for a lil bit concerning new things added into the php function libs.
but if anyone ever wanted to post to this community about stuff, it would be a first and quite cool to discuss new techniques or answer questions.
    peace

oh btw if anyone is playin eq2 let me know cuz i just bought that to try it out and if you play we could meet up and rp for a bit.

Aloha to the new member enginsite,
To all I haven't had much time to post any new code in 2 weeks, sorry for all of you who read this and haven't had an update.
I will work on something here in a day or two. Probably something concerning my newest project.
web based store transaction system, that also can be an online store, but is used at the checkout line in a mall :).
Very spiffy stuff. Gonna have lots o fun with this.
I will post code here and there about it, and puzzles, challenges.
I've always liked nehe.gamedev.net and zend.com's coding challenges, they are the best. I want people to join this community first, and get input from users and such before that takes off.
    back to work,

  5. [SOLVED] Dynamic HTML issue

Date: 01/02/06 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: php, css, html, xml, java, web

    Hey Guys,

I have a website i am working on

    http://dev.jamesmandrews.com/

It's one html file. index.php (not really php just html in a php ext file)
    http://dev.jamesmandrews.com/index.php

    Then one javascript file
    http://dev.jamesmandrews.com/includes/control.js

    And an XML data file
    http://dev.jamesmandrews.com/data/portfolio.xml

Basically when in Safari and Firefox it does what it's suppose to. When you click on portfolio it builds a grid of album categories, when you click on a category it builds a grid of albums for that category, when you click on the album it builds a grid of images in that album. when you click on the image, it displays the full image alone.

The problem in IE is that it doesn't listen to my divObj.style.cssFloat="left"; command and I don't understand why not. Looking for some insight.

    Thanks,

Hey I am new to this community and I'm really just starting to dip into Javascript for some websites I am doing. My question is: I have a rotating image gallery driven by JS and I can't seem to figure out how to link each individual page to its corresponding product page. The way I have the code now, the first image/link works but it doesn't refresh once the next images(s) appear.

Here is the page which I am referring to:
    Air Cylinders Direct

Here is the code in which I am referring to:

I apologize if my code is disgusting and messy. I'm just a newbie.

Date: 11/29/05 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: java, web

Well this is just a little post to say I've just joined the community. I'm a Scottish based web developer working in the recruitment sector (which sounds really serious... scary). I tend to do a lot of Perl coding and have also recently got right back into Javascript having fallen out with it seriously in the 90's.

Anyway recently I needed to be able to have a form where a group of checkboxes had to interact with a group of radio buttons as if they were part of the set... So if a radio button was selected the checkboxes would all be cleared and if a checkbox was ticked the radio buttons would be cleared. After twiddling about with that for a while I tought people might find my result useful so posted it on my site.

Checkboxes that act like radio buttons

Any comments, critiques or questions are gratefully apprieciated.

Date: 01/14/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, web

Novice Question here. All of the web pages I look at in my computers browsers (Internet Explorer and Mozzila Firefox) have always seemed too big when compared to other computers I’ve used. How does one shrink down all the pictures and graphics one is looking at, thus making the webpage look smaller. I can only change the size of the text at this point.

Date: 01/12/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, spam

I own a domain name and it seems to have been hyjacked by spammers. I've checked with the webhosters and they say that the mail relay is closed.
I am getting a lot of rejected emails from recipients receiving emails from spoofed addresses within my domain. I am concerned about my domain being blacklisted.

Is there anything that I can do to protect my domain name?

  11. frustrating problem(s)

Date: 01/08/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, yahoo, microsoft, google

On my older computer (a Dell that runs Windows 98), I keep getting invalid page fault errors. Several occur after Windows has loaded:
    YOP (that's Yahoo Online Protection)
    rundll32
    and something called autodown

It also occurs when I startup Internet Explorer, I get that program error message asking me if I want to send data to Microsoft and then the program crashes. I can't access the Internet even though I'm connected.

All the errors say that the program caused an invalid page fault error at module "unknown"

I've tried running anti-virus (AVG) and Ad-aware... I have that computer networked with this one (running Windows XP) and sharing a DSL connection. After some issues in the beginning, I finally got the network up and running so I've been using this computer to download the antivirus programs so I can run them on the other one since I can't get IE to work there at all.
Another thing that may or may not be related: if I uncheck automatically detect settings under LAN settings in internet options, then IE doesn't crash, but the pages won't load.

I'm also having a small, unrelated issue on this computer (the windows XP one). I can't get the internet options setting for "never dial a connection" to stick. I have DSL, so I'm always connected, but certain sites make the dial a connection box pop up. And when I head back to internet options, the "dial whenever a network connection is not present" option is checked off.

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated! I've tried Dell's support website as well as Microsoft's and Googled 'til I couldn't see straight, but I haven't come up with any solutions for my problem.

EDIT: got the first problem solved - uninstalled Yahoo Online Protection and that did the trick!! Still can't figure out what's causing the never dial a connection setting to change. It's frustrating, but I figure it should go away once I delete my AOL account.

Date: 06/22/05 (Software)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, security, web, linux, yahoo

I have a group of users (100 or so) that need read/write access to a document (excel) of sensitive information. Since they are all over the place, they requested a web application to be able to access from anywhere whenever they need to modify or look at this document. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to provide a secure way to only allow these specific users to access this document.
    ideas have included:

Plone - complex, looking for simplicity
phpBB - requires me to set up a mysql linux box somewhere which might be possible
Yahoo groups - not very secure but basically what i want

any other ideas? Security of this information is the biggest priority. i currently have both linux/windows available to host.

  16. Combinatorics

    Date: 12/22/05 (Algorithms)    Keywords: web

    Hello,

I ran into a combinatorics problem in a website I'm developing. I can't for the life of me figure this one out... I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me with this.

You're given n lists of elements, where an element consists of a unique identifier and a number. These lists are of various lengths and are all sorted from low to high based on the element's number. You want to generate all sequences of elements, where each sequence contains exactly one element from every list. The catch is that you need to generate these sequences in sorted order. The sort value for a sequence is simply the sum of all numbers from the elements in that sequence.

For example if you had just two lists:

    List 1: {A-10, B-20}
    List 2: {D-1, E-2, F-100}

You would return the following order of sequences:
    {A,D}, {A,E}, {B,D}, {B,E}, {A,F}, {B,F}
as that would give you the sort values:
    11, 12, 21, 22, 110, 120

I can't just calculate all combinations and then sort them, as my application would typically have billions of combinations and I only need the top 100. I need to do this in sorted order.

    Thanks for the help!

  17. LJ Clique Program

    Date: 12/10/05 (Algorithms)    Keywords: web

You might remember a few weeks ago someone posted about a clique* finder for LJ. I wrote another program to do this, using an algorithm that finds exact solutions. It runs quite fast for inputs up to around 200 or so (it takes < 1 second for anything up to around 140). Also, it finds all cliques, not just the maximal one.

I tried it against the clique finder that was linked in that discussion, and the results seem to match, though I only tried a few usernames.

I don't have a nifty web interface set up for it (it's in Perl, with the clique-finding code in C++), and I wouldn't have anywhere to host it if I did, but if you are interested I can run some queries on it.

    * My definition of a clique is a group where every pair of members are MUTUAL friends, and no member can be added to the group while maintaining this property.

  18. HP BIOS and CD boot issues.

Date: 01/17/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web

It's time for me to reinstall XP. However, while Windows has no problem reading CDs, my BIOS (PhoenixBIOS 4.0 release 6.0.5) doesn't recognise the newer CD-ROM drive I've installed.

I could open up the box and put in the old CD drive just to for the reinstall, but I want to update the BIOS, as it's last been updated on 9/12/2000.

Here's the tricky bit. My computer, an ancient HP Pavilion XE783 does not have updated drivers available at either the HP site, the Phoenix site, nor the Asus site. Nor can I find updates anywhere else on the web. According to the HP site (link), my motherboard is a CUW-AM, however, this page for the Intel 810 (link) lists my desktop model as having that motherboard.

My question is: Can/should I find a BIOS update for the i810, and/or the MEW-AM motherboard (which I can't determine to be the same thing as the CUW-AM?)

    Thank you kindly.

    ** EDIT **

Afer hours and hours of cross referencing and Googling, I found THIS PAGE at the HP site (why it was so buried and difficult to track down, I don't understand), which lists the XE783 as having the MEW-AM mother board, and has a BIOS update. This seems to be a common problem, as I'd come across a number of posts in various message boards looking for the elusive CUW-AM BIOS update. Odd.

    ** EDIT AGAIN **

The BIOS has been successfully updated, but the computer refuses to boot from CD. I've put the CD drive at the top of the boot list in the BIOS, and still, nothing. What's odd is that the CD drive light blinks when the computer starts up. The device manager recognizes the CD drive, and even after reinstalling it through the device manager, still the drive refuses to boot. Perhaps the Phoenix BIOS has some sort of guard against new hardware?

  19. icon associations / upload problems

Date: 01/15/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: software, web

After installing some software, I've somehow lost the icon associations for some graphic images. (jpg and gif, mainly) The icon is the windows white "square", with the bent corner and the windows "window" inside of it. (no, not the flying windows icon.) In a folders details view, all the extensions are intact, and by double clicking on them, the appropriate associated application launches. In Properties of the file, it says "Opens with unknown application", yet, as I said, double clicking does open it in the appropraie program.

Of course, Tools \ Folder Options\ File Types allows me to remedy this, but the icons for jpgs and gifs do not seem to be there for me to associate with the file types.

As a kicker, I've had some websites where I uploaded pictures to, bark at me when I attempt to upload a jpg or gif. I doubt these 2 are related, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it.

    XP, sp2.

    Any thoughts?
    !
    Thanks!

After a bunch of "RESTORE and "CHANGE ICON" clicks, it seems to have righted itself. Thanks!

  20. Broadcast Help

Date: 01/13/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: rss, web

As a hugely important part of the group we currently run -- which you all may or may not know about -- I'm initiating a live-feed radio broadcast, which will be linked on our site, via RSS, and various other things. Out of all the options, I'd decided ages ago that Shoutcast was the best option... and so this morning, after our cable internet was finally hooked up and I'd gotten a decent broadcast mic, I downloaded the necessary items to get it running.

However, whether it's because my medication's making me brain-dead or because I'm just a doofus, I seem to be clueless about creating a server. Do I need to host it on my website... and if so, how can I do this? [Step-by-step would be nice... heh.] If not, am I missing something on the instructions? Is there a process I can follow?

And if these things are too complex or just a general pain in the ass, is there a better, free -- for now -- broadcasting utility, like Live365, that I can download and run for free, at least for the moment? We'd been trying to get this running by tonight, but argh, gotta love it.

    TIA, guys. ;)

[EDIT: Okay. I found the server download, and apparently it's running. *dramatic brow-wipe.* However, I'd still be EXTREMELY grateful for any help and advice -- more setup? How to create a "Listen" link from our site? How to run a broadcast live via mic? You pretty much get the idea. Thanks!]
