1. A big hairball's worth of trouble-DIVs, Footers, CSS

    Date: 07/02/07     Keywords: css, web

    Hi, new member!

I'm trying to design a new layout for my website, but I can't seem to get the sidebar to dispay correctly and work with the footer.

    http://www.evenstar.crowned-meadow.net/4.8

    http://www.evenstar.crowned-meadow.net/style.css

The sidebar tends to move with the content. If it's not long enough, it gets pushed up past where I want it to be-but the longer the content gets, the farther it moves down. Plus, it gets stuck behind the footer, which refuses to move down.

I want the sidebar to sit up near the top of the green bar, and not move with the content-and the footer to rest at the bottom of the page, under whichever DIV turns out to be longer.

However, I've been told that my layuot displays correctly in IE 7. The problem? I'm using IE 7!

As such, it may just be me...

Here's screencaps of what I see:

    http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/6544/cap5gd4.jpg -The bottom

Anyone know what the deal is and how to fix this?

P.S.-Comments on how the layout looks are appreciated as well :-)

    Date: 07/02/07     Keywords: browser

I created a simple contact us form, but the form fields size look so different on IE and Safari browser. The form fields look longer on Safari, especially the field where they write messages. How can make the form fields look the same length and size on both browser?

  3. Appleseed Release Version 0.7.2

Date: 07/01/07     Keywords: web, hosting, spam

The latest version of Appleseed (0.7.2) is now available. This version adds further functionality to the photo component, "tagging" functionality, and the ability for administrators to "trust" or "block" other nodes. A simple configuration page has also been added to the administration section for first time users.

The source code for this release can be downloaded at:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/appleseed

If you're looking to set up a test site, I would recommend using Dreamhost.com. I currently use them for hosting appleseedproject.org and Appleseed is sure to work if installed on one of their shared accounts.

Appleseed is doing three things that are very cutting edge for the web:

    1. Distributed Social Networking - Taking social networking away from massive, monolithic sites like MySpace and Friendster and distributing it across potentially thousands of sites that all work together.

    2. Single Sign On - Similar to OpenID, Appleseed's single sign on focuses on end-user ease of use. If you have a login for one appleseed site, then you can log in using your appleseed address (for example, michael.chisari@appleseedproject.org) to authenticate you for any other appleseed site. More on OpenID is available at http://openid.net/

    3. Sender-Stores messaging: Based loosely on the IM2000 proposal, a Sender Stores system seeks to add accountability as a means to reducing and possibly eliminating spam. More on IM2000 is available at: http://www.im2000.org/

If you would like an invite to the test site (http://appleseedproject.org), just let me know and I'll send you an email.

I thought I'd be able to make my own site, but I simply don't have the time!

I make and model costumes, and want a webpage to display them.
For a look at my costumes, please check out my deviant art page:

  8. Flash Player Design

    Date: 06/29/07     Keywords: web

I am in the middle of quoting a pretty big web design project. The one thing I'm going to need to outsorce is the design of a few customized flash players... I have not gotten savvy with flash to the point of feeling able to do it myself.

I'm trying to get an idea of what this will cost so I can have an estimate to base the proposal off of. Does anyone here do this type of work, and/or have a general range of what it would cost? I am looking for both a music player (about 20 songs) with a customized look (bright, kid-friendly buttons that match the colors of the site), and possibly a movie player as well. And like I said, I'm looking for an estimated range, not a really specific price. I just want an idea of what cost I'll be passing on to the client.

And of course, if you're interested in the gig, let me know. I've gotten a bunch of really nonspecific replies from Craigslist (the kind that I, admittedly, send out myself: "Tell me more about the project before I quote you a price") that are not really helping me write this proposal right now... So someone who gives me useful information now would defininitely be given favor when making the decision.

  10. drop-down menu alignment problems

    Date: 06/29/07     Keywords: no keywords

Hi all! It's me again. I took all your very nice comments into consideration and have redone the page. It is now just done with tables (please tell me if that won't work!) and very, very minimal graphic usage. Here's the page I'm playing with.

So I have one more question. I'm doing a simple drop-down menu, but even that isn't going how I want it to. The problem will be obvious when you go to the page. Why are the menus dropping down directly under the links you hover over to get them? They are way over on the left side. I don't much understand this menu coding, so I don't know how to fix it. Help? Please?

    Any other comments also welcome.

    Thanks!
    Courtney

  11. IE 6 anchor problem.

    Date: 06/28/07     Keywords: browser

I just did a site redesign for my T-shirt design sideline at .

The problem I have is that the anchors work in every browser I have access to including Safari, Firefox and IE 7 - except IE6.

Would someone take a look at what I've done and tell me where I screwed up, or how to get around IE's screw-up, whichever it is?

    Thanks.

  12. RSS?

    Date: 06/28/07     Keywords: html, web

First of all, I just want to say... hi, and I love you guys. I always come to this community to ask (often dumb) questions about HTML or web design and 99/100 times get the answer I need. I've never really said how much I appreciate everyone in this community and am so glad it exists!! So thanks!!

That said, here goes another (possibly dumb) question...
I have a blog at Blogger.com. I would like the most recent 2 or 3 headlines and maybe a snippet of the latest blog post to appear on the home page of a separate website I own. Is there a simple way of getting this to happen?

(As a note, I really don't care if the blog content is on Blogger.com or any other blog site, or even if I just type it into a txt doc... and I also don't care how many headlines show up or how much of the blog post is on the home page... so basically, I just want automatically updated blog content on my site that is integrated into the design of the home page.)

Anyone done this before? Does FeedBurner.com help people do this sort of thing?

    Thanks!

    Date: 06/28/07     Keywords: web

Greets folks, I have the fortunate task of overhauling this website: http://www.fsu.edu/~nursing.

Now, I'm by all means open to any suggestions, but the site does have to maintain the http://www.fsu.edu identity.  What works?  What doesn't work?

My first idea was to restructure all of the links.  I wanted to break down the links to Welcome, Prospective Students, Alumni Connections, Current Students, Faculty & Staff, and Contact and keep these links with every page, however my boss disagrees and wants to keep the links as is.

I'm open for suggestions, as we'll be hashing at thing thing til August it seems.

    Thanks all!

I'm writing this on behalf of my boyfriend.

He has a hosting account with 1and1.co.uk using Windows Hosting as he is a .net developer/programmer. He's having all sorts of problems with 1and1.co.uk and wants to change hosting company.

He's having trouble finding one decent enough and affordable for what he needs.

Can anyone recommend a decent hosting company for .net/asp/windows etc.?

  16. Whitewashing the firewall? Eh? What?

    Date: 06/27/07     Keywords: web, hosting

    Background
Ok... I posted a few days ago about my problem I was having with my sites, www.pinup-parade.com and www.rockinscene.com. I posted on here because I thought it might've been my lack of skillz which had caused the problem.

I use cirtexhosting.com... but not for much longer, I feel!

I know this isn't about webdesign, but I assume most/some/one or two of you will know about this sort of thing. Basically... some people can get on the websites fine, and others can't - it seems that the site takes ages to load and then times out.

    The Corresondance
I reported this to the Cirtex Hosting people, and after jumping through the hoops of trying to convince them that there really *is* a problem ("Hey, we can see it fine here. You need to check your ISP" - is *not* what I wanted to hear!), they seemed to figure out that it was their firewall which was the problem.

So they did something to it, and everyone could get the sites to load. But then... yesterday evening, they couldn't again. I contact them....

Cirtex: Can you please try as we have cleared our firewall.
Me: Was it your firewall that caused the problem before? I'm able to get on the site perfectly, but it's just other people who are telling me they can't - and it's all the same people as last time who couldn't! I'll have a look in the latest visitors thing and see if I can spot anything....
Cirtex: We will put the ticket on hold until you get back to us.
Me: I'm not really sure how to go about diagnosing something like this, but it looks like the 304 error is back in town. (I don't really know what 304 means....)
Cirtex:We have checked it with multiple locations and all working fine, you can try a test in http://proxify.com . (So what??? It doesn't answer the problem for the people who can't get it to load!)
Me: One of my friends who was having trouble says she's got on it now - but I really don't want this to keep happening every few days! (It reappeared again mid-morning...)
Cirtex: Let me know the list of gateway IP addresses of your friends so that I will whitelist it in our firewall. This will be a permanent fix.

    WTF?
Ok... whitelist their firewall... what does this mean?

the other thing is... I'm not doing a website "just for my friends". I want anyone, anywhere, who's interested in my sites, who clicks on a link to it or whatever, to be able to get to it. why is this so hard???? Have I been misinformed as to the purpose of the internet????! WTF is going on????

Please, please tell me what they're on about... my hair's turning grey... :(

  18. HTML newsletter problem

    Date: 06/26/07     Keywords: html

This is driving me nuts, and I hope someone can help me. I've designed an HTML email newsletter. It's not overly image-laden, and all the images are optimized GIFs hosted on a server and called by URL. I didn't get fancy with formatting - just used a background color in one of the td's, and some color and font stuff to differentiate between two levels of headlines.

The problem is, it's still 159K when it hits the inbox. I've streamlined as much as I know how. Now, here's the really weird part. There's a newsletter I subscribe to that has a fairly similar design, but with a ton of images... and it regularly hits only about 40K in my inbox. So, as a test, I copied the source code from the latest edition of that newsletter, put it into a file on my computer, and sent the newsletter to myself. It showed up at 679K!

So apparently, there's some kind of compression happening somewhere when they send it out (or else Outlook Express is fattening when used as the sender).

What the heck am I missing here?
