firefox disappearing div
Date: 10/26/05
Keywords: web
I have a section of code on a page I'm working on that's supposed to display a div containing 3 columns, each of which contains a list. The div has a background color set that should also be the background for the 3 lists, etc. Behind the cut is my code, I would be eternally grateful if someone would help me

beginning web page
Date: 10/26/05
Keywords: php, java, web
i need to make a beginning web page.
i want it to have a picture and a countdown... so either
1) the user scrolls over it, clicks on it, and is led to the next page OR
2) if the user doesn't click on it, the countdown will lead him/her to the next page anyway.
My questions
- is there a name for this kind of page? (splash page?)
- any thoughts to go about doing this? flash? javascript? php?
thanks so much!

CSS Image Pop-Up
Date: 10/22/05
Keywords: web
Hi. I'm trying to set up my web site for my online art portfolio. I have an idea for a gallery, but I can't figure out how to get it to work (I've been looking stuff up for hours!)
Here was my idea:
I've made little thumbnail pictures for my drawings. Each one links to the full drawing itself. However, when it's clicked/the mouse goes over it, I'd like the full size image to pop up. (Like this!)
I checked "View Source", but I still can't figure out how to get it to work.
If anybody could tell me how to do this, I'd really appreciate it!

If you were asked to do some updates to a site that you didn't create, how much would you charge? We're just talking changing a few things around here and there, adding and deleting images, etc.

Keywords: css
hey all.. having some css problems. this is pretty much the first time i've tried to do a site fully using css instead of tables, so im having some issues. heres what i've got so far.
issues:
1) the content area isn't growing properly to contain all of its content
2) the newsItem classes are growing large enough to handle the text content, but not the photos
i haven't put in the box model hacks to fix it for IE yet, so i know it doesn't look right in there yet. one thing at a time...

Moved business... looking for clients...
Date: 10/18/05
Keywords: no keywords
I've been doing design for over 11 years since I was a beta tester for Netscape in 1994. In August, 2003 I decided to start my own company up and do it full-time after working for "the man" and taking small jobs here and there.
That was in Madison, WI and did ok... Now I live in Rochester, MN where I moved last week. I've found that there's 2 major design firms here and a handful of small guys that no one knows that well. In the phone book, there's the 2 firms plus 5 others (2 of which have non-working numbers, 2 of which have answering machines without the company name).
Any ideas on what to do to get the ball rolling? I've got little funds for advertising up front, have joined the Chamber and will be meeting with the Dex phone book people in the morning about the new directory that comes out next March. I'm a member of BNI which is a networking referral group that's world-wide in chapter locations and have been a member of that for over 2 years.
Got temp business cards 'til I can get the $150 together for the heavy gloss cardstock cards (wedding is this Saturday and moving costs are killing me). Running the biz out of the house like before and have phone and fax and cell already for this area. Site's been changed with local info.
So... What should I do? I can do the cold-calling thing but don't want to be ambulance chasing 'til i'm blue.
If you want to look at my site, it's www.conxis.com. I'm always open to getting feedback from my peers on the site.
btw - i've shopped the competition. they are charging $90 an hour, and i'm keeping my Madison rate of $75 for here. When I do proposals I figure 3 hours per page on the cost. That works the best in best estimating time on project.
thanks!

Sorry about my earlier post - it has sinced been removed.
At any rate, I got the site working, mostly. A preview can be seen here:
http://www.shifuimam.com/lj/lj.htm
CSS is here:
http://www.shifuimam.com/lj/style.css
I tried to apply the Box Model Hack to make the orange navigational tabs to appear the same width in IE and Firefox, but I still can't figure it out. I know I finally got it working on my own site (shifuimam.com), but now I can't remember how.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've created a new community:
ara_artwork
If you're a graphic designer or artist, and you're interested or involved in anti-racist activism, this community is for you. We'll all be working together as a team to create an original set of logos, images, etc. and an overall new aesthetic for Anti-Racist Action. The goal is to get away from the common punk rock aesthetics, and explore other styles (hip hop, anime, graf, pop, etc), as well as to explore ways to visually convey diverse anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-homophobic ideas.
So if you want to create cool art for a good cause, join
ara_artwork.

help!!
Date: 10/17/05
Keywords: css, html, database, asp, web
I'm going freakin' insane here, and it is (of course) because of the different ways IE and Firefox display HTML and CSS.
Here is my site:
http://www.shifuimam.com/site.zip
I can't post links to it, because the only Windows web server I have access to is from my university, and it's password-protected.
There are three pages in that archive, plus all the includes and whatnot to make them display properly. browse.asp displays fine in IE and Firefox. faq.asp and category.asp, however, shift the content of the page down a bit for no explicable reason. I thought it was because of the tables on those two pages, but when I added a table to another page that was working fine, it displayed without any problems.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
Oh - the databases are also included so all the stuff displays correctly. I know some of you might tell me to not use Access, and I normally wouldn't, but my teacher in this class requested we use Access databases so that he could see our database structure more easily.
Thanks in advance for any help provided!!

Help, I'm brain-blocked!
Date: 10/16/05
Keywords: browser, css, html, web
Hey,
I've been working on this site for most of the morning. I got a job deconstructing a table based layout into full CSS. After a few setbacks (I couldn't seem to get the floats to display properly in all browsers -- which is a major stipulation) I decided on using absolute positioning.
Well, now I got the pages displaying the same in all browsers -- except a medium sized glitch -- I can't figure out how to get all three (or two on the second template) to be the same length.
For example:
On this page -- http://triplelproductions.com/designs/business/freeordination/index3.html -- The right and left columns are longer than the middle. I can't seem to get them to perfectly match eachother no materr what the amount of content is within any column. (The second template is here if you need to see -- http://triplelproductions.com/designs/business/freeordination/index4.html --) And the CSS is located here: http://triplelproductions.com/designs/business/freeordination/images/tlpcustom1.css
What I need to do is fix that so all my columns are the same length, no matter how much/little each column contains.
An alternative to this is using a background color to fill in the space that's left, but when I set the background color for my container it doesn't show.
I know that's an easy fix, but after staring at this code/site all morning, my eyes are burning and my brain is blocked. So if anyone can offer me any solutions (that does not include major code reworking) please do!
Thanks in advance guys, you'll be saving me major hours of frustration!!

[fixed]forcing div to appear under a floated div
Date: 10/15/05
Keywords: no keywords
i've got 4 divs.
first one contains the rest second one contains floats an image to the right
third one contains the text that wraps around the image
and a fourth which is a sig.
i want the forth one to appear under the image no matter what. problem is it keeps trying to set under the text and thus sits next to the image instead, how would i go about fixing that so it appears under the image?

forum with email replies?
Date: 10/15/05
Keywords: php, web
ok folks another bit of help on this site I'm doing for a friend of mine
he wants to have a forum which you can reply to though emails to threads/post also which post to the wbsite as well.
I'm thinking kinda how livejournal works when you can get replies and reply though your mailbox without having to go to the actual site itself but still gets posted on the site you know?
I've been looking at phpbb at the moment as I have used this one in the past and easy to set up. Is this one up to the job of what I have said? or is there anything else out there?
Update:
Looks like he basically wants to be able to read and reply to post as a mailing list thought email as well as a web forum front end for people liking the forums that are already out there

RSS / Blog question

Keywords: java
Okay everyone... after fighting with this for several days, I've decided to finally ask for help.
I want http://pantherqueen.com/PQ2005/retention.htm to have only the entries, the way http://people.tribe.net/pantherqu33n (at the top) or http://theartistd.com or http://www.veddie.com/v24/ has only entries.
I'm *terrible* with LJ styles; I just can't figure it out. Is there a different way to do this where I don't have to write JavaScript or make an LJ style?
It's currently in progress, my friend gave me a JS code but I don't quite understand how to edit it to make it fit inside the scrollable area, plus those blue bars and the links at the top are frustrating.
Thanks!
