1. Resolutions, and not the new year type.

    Date: 11/04/05     Keywords: html, java, web

    Hey all,

    Got a question which to some of you knowledgeable peeps out there might seem silly and foolish, then again it may not.

    As there are always the punters out there who continue to set their computers to lower resolutions than those considered "acceptable", is there a script (be it HTML, Java etc) which detects the resolution of the viewers PC and "suggests" or auto-loads the most specific one from a collection of differently rendered web pages?

    Thanks and apologies if this is a silly question.

    Cheers

    M

  2. yada-yada-yada

    Date: 11/04/05     Keywords: web

    Alright, I've been doing freelance Graphic Design for about 4 years now. All the websites I've made have been for friends, so when I finish them I give them the files on a disc and they then upload them themselves. My question is, if I do a site for a client how would "give it to them" ?

  3. Domain Transferring. . .

    Date: 11/04/05     Keywords: web

    Could anyone explain to me how I would go about transferring my domain name from GoDaddy to Dreamhost? Domain registration confuses the hell out of me, and unsurprisingly, I couldn't find anything on GoDaddy that tells me how to transfer out of their service and into someone else's. And would the process be the same for my other domain registered at iPowerWeb?

    Thanks for the help.

  4. Image maps, BUT NOT!

    Date: 11/04/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm trying to figure out how to do an image map without the... use of an image.

    The thing is, the image I'd like to use is my background so I can't just throw a map on top and say 'tally ho.' Not that I would anyway, but you get the point.

    How do I get the same effect of an image map without actually sticking it on an image? That is, how do I make a small field of nothingness that serves as a link?

    The image I'm using for my background (and, indeed, my entire layout) is underneath this cut.

    See how there's link options at the side? That's what I'm trying to get to... well, link.

    Otherwise, is it an okay layout for a personal site? Clientele and the like won't be looking for services and the like, so I don't have to worry about that sort of thing.

    Thanks a lot in advance. And all.

    Rock on. ♥

  5. For the record, I'm not a designer. :)

    Date: 11/03/05     Keywords: web

    I'm working on a website to showcase the findings for one of my final grad school projects. I'm open to any and all criticisms so I can try to make this look better / more appealing. Is the font choice for the navigation/title too much of an eyesore? Would you want to sit and look at this thing for a while?

    Don't mind the pages 1-20 thing on the bottom of the screen. That's going to disappear.

    Please look. You don't have to go easy on me.. I'd really appreciate the feedback! Since I'm not a designer my feelings won't be hurt. :)

    I'm leaning more towards this one:
    Image hosted by Photobucket.com

    This was my initial design. Do the colors work better? I'm mainly concerned with the colors in this one as I know the nav looks horrible in this one. :)

  6. Problem with link colors in Firefox

    Date: 11/02/05     Keywords: php

    I need a little help here. I did a site for a client using Dreamweaver. Site looks great in IE. Colors all perfect, etc. She is using Firefox. Colors, not so great. The links are showing up blue or violet, and on the MyCalendar php page the popup text is green. I've tried figureing out what the problem is, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

    Please be warned, if going to the site, that it contains adult content. The site is at http://www.bondageexpert.com

    Any suggestions of making the colors for links look right in both IE and Firefox?

  7. Running out of options

    Date: 11/01/05     Keywords: php, database, java, web, apache

    Hey, I may not have said this, or I don't say it enough, but I wanted to thank everyone in this community for their continued support and efforts. I would be the first to admit that when I find myself with any questions or in need of an honest (most of the time) professional opinion, this is where I tend to stop first.

    I work for a higher education provider who has recently put a new state wide internet campaign together. This meant that all regions throughout the state came together and had to adhere to a standard format for all web publications. To me, this was a great move, however, we are still very limited to the type of tools we can utilize for creating web documents. For example, right now we are needing to publish our college bookstore book list online. The bookstore is currently using a very large and extensive Access database to handle all bookstore events. Each semester, or when a new book is added/deleted/edited to the book list, we publish an excel version of this book list and push that to our website, as is. We are now finding that this method is difficult to track, manage and keep current. It's a waste of time, really.

    Here's what they are asking me, if we are able to update the database and have it also update the web at the same time?

    Well my answer was yes, then no, and here's why.

    Our network group has restricted all scripting except for Javascript and CGI/Perl. I'm pretty sure we are running Apache on a Unix box, with nothing like PHP installed. I really don't think Javascript could be used for this, however, I don't know it enough to really make anything happen. The same goes for me when it comes to CGI/Perl.

    I do, however, know that I could accomplish this utilizing the Access database and PHP. Somethings I do know. But since I don't have the tools available to me that I know best, what other options could I use? Any suggestions?

    very 37signals types of effects and cross browser compatible (tho i'm sure it won't work on ie for the mac, but i can't prove it since my own copy of ie won't open) and easy to implement.

  14. Photoshop problem update

    Date: 10/28/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Thanks, everyone, for your advice from yesterday. I downloaded the trial version of Photoshop CS, but I'm having the same problems with it hanging or crashing every time I try to open an image. There must be something else going on.

    Also, I noticed that all .JPG files are being identified as Image Ready files, even though I left Photoshop as the primary image editing program. Is that normal? I'm wondering if part of the problem is that there is a conflict between Photoshop and Image Ready.

    Hello. I'm running Photoshop 5.5 on my new Dell PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition. Photoshop worked at first, but now it hangs or crashes whenever I attempt to open a file. Has anyone run into a similar problem before? I called Adobe directly, but they weren't really able to help.

    I've got a page I'm working on. I have a couple spans that kindly wrap the text inside them, but when they wrap the text, they mess up the line height so I end up with weird spaces. Is there a way around this? Bigger picture and code behind the cut.

  17. Email an Attachment through Flash Form?

    Date: 10/26/05     Keywords: php, html, java

    Hi all...so, I have this Flash presentation to construct for a friend...

    1. he wants the user to submit info registration to a flash form
    2. the resulting page says "thank you, certificate of authentication has been sent"
    3. he wants the jpg of the certificate emailed to the registrant as an attachment.

    Do you know the action script/code to do this? it's only a mock up presentation; we would like to fake it as much as possible.

    Could it be done with this:

    Code:

    on (release) { loadVariables("email.php",'POST'); javascript('alert("Thank you for contacting us.");'); }

    ---------------

    PHP Code for email.php

    $name = $_POST['Name'];
    $email = $_POST['Email'];
    $message = $_POST['Message'];

    $name = stripslashes($name);
    $email = stripslashes($email);
    $message = stripslashes($message);

    $rec_email = "info@yoursite.com";
    $subject = "Online form submission";

    $msg_body .= "Name: $name\n\n";
    $msg_body .= "E-Mail: $email\n\n";
    $msg_body .= "Comments: $message\n\n";
    mail($rec_email, $subject, $msg_body);

    -------------

    And then could a $msg_body be HTML code that embeds the image?

    Or could I possibly skip the PHP and use javascript? If so, could you possibly supply the code?

    What is possibly the best way to do this? Any help is greatly appreciated thanks so much...

    I know I need to rework my website but I can't see the forest for the trees. I like the theme and general design but I think it still looks more personal website and less professional if that makes sense. If you have a moment can you go and look at and give me your opinion?

    Also, does anyone have an idea why my main large picture on the front does a disappearing act? Some days when I load the page it's there sometimes it's not but the menu bar always shows up.
