  2. Stupid web font followup...

    Date: 08/30/05     Keywords: browser, css, technology, web

    So, to continue from yesterday's post about using not-so-safe fonts in browsers, I had a few suggestions to sIFR to use Univers on my company's web site. I want to know how long did it take you all to learn it. Did it take a week to understand it and fully customize it for your needs or just a few days? My company's site needs to be posted by the end of the week and I'm not sure there's enough time for me to learn a new technology. If sIFR is going to take a while, I'll just use Arial and futz with CSS to make it look a little more like Univers.

    What say you all? Thanks.

  3. Font Matching...

    Date: 08/29/05     Keywords: browser, web

    Hi all. My coworkers want to use Univers for our company's web site. That is definitely impossible for browsers, yada yada. Isn't it Helvetica Condensed that ends up looking like Univers or Trade Gothic but can still be read by Mac and PC browsers? Please inform.

    Thanks.

  4. css issues

    Date: 08/27/05     Keywords: css, html

    I've run into a bit of a brick wall with this css layout thing.

    the html

    the css

    I've only been cross checking firefox and IE for this, and I'm still very new to css so go easy on me *L*

    My problem is everything works fine in firefox, but not IE. It's only 2 little fiddly bits but I want to get it right.

    the

    for some reason isn't lining up properly on the left, the border is about 2px in. I put a float: left in which fixed that problem but messed up the right side of the div in both firefox and IE.

    the second problem might be a little more difficult. I've got a script punked from dynamicdrive.com which makes the drop down menus in the nav. Again, in firefox everything works just fine, but in explorer I've noticed that when you actually drop down the options it shifts the paragraphs in
    over to the right a bit. Not major but still annoying.

    Anybody have any suggestions? Constructive Criticism? Am I doing anything completely wacky? *L* Thanks!

    We are applying a new template to our site and I was working on graphics this rainy Friday (TGIF) morning.

    There are 3 banner images on our main page. I created some nice images and once I was satisfied with the completion, I sat back in my comfy office chair to have a closer look, oh crap!, there wasn't a single female in any of the images I used. So, back to the drawing board.

    Round 2! and again I sit back, this time resting my hands on my head, to take a gander, phooey!, no minorities.

    I had to think to myself that if I hadn't been working for a higher ed employer that I wouldn't have even thought of any of this.

    Do you find that being "politically correct" in all of your work from the start, is a good rule of thumb to have?

    Just a mind fart for a Friday and thought I would pollute LJ with my random-ness.

    So, I'm in the second week of the new job at the corporate office.
    This the first time I actually have a title and can explain what I do and where I do it and make a pretty good living at it.
    I am *drum roll*
    a Web Master for the E-commerce division of the National Safety Council at www.nsc.org
    I've got a nice little cubicle, company e-mail address, and my own 4-digit extension on the phone.
    One of the higher-ups came down and personally thanked me for the work I'd done updating thd site.

    Now, I can here those of you like me (until a week and half ago) saying:
    When Lawd? When gonna be my time?

    Well, if you live in the Chicagoland/N. Illinois area, that time is now.
    My boss told me that we are currently understaffed and they need another person to do the same kind of job that I'm doing now.

    So, it you have some web skills I urge you to go the job page and drop them a line.

  8. Any nicely designed traditional furniture sites?

    Date: 08/24/05     Keywords: web

    Does anyone know of any furniture web sites that are designed in a "traditional" style?

    Traditional Example: http://www.restorationhardware.com

    Contemporary Example: http://www.westelm.com

    Medium Example?: http://www.nanz.com

    They are both really well designed but our client wants something more like Restoration Hardware. The client's company has been in business for the past 40 years and wants to look like it. It's a company that sells lamp shades by the way.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I know the more you practice it the more you learn but I wanted to know in general how long it took everyone to learn php at the intermediate level.

    Anyone know how to do 360 images like the ones here?

    I'm guessing I could do this either as Quicktime like Apple does (though I have no idea where to begin), or Flash (I'd have to brush up on my action scripting). Any tutorials on either of those methods?

    Date: 08/22/05     Keywords: html, web

    Hey all,

    I need to make a simple email for a client. The fields are Name [required], Email [required], Phone [not required]. I would like it to submit the results to her email address with a specified subject line. What is the easiest way to do this? Right now I'm hacking away at a PERL script and getting pretty frustrated. Is there a way to do this in HTML without employing PERL? If there are any sites you know of, please pass the urls along. I've been searching through many and there's just too much information. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Hi, I'm new to the group and had a question for anyone who knows flash. I'm working on my portfolio site and on the very top of the page I want a flash header. I want this header to be on every page but I don't want the flash to start over again when some clicks on a link. (I can't hink of an example site to post, sorry. :( ) Is there a way to do this? Should I just go with iframes? Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

  18. Help!

    Date: 08/22/05     Keywords: css

    I need info on how to quote out a job...I have a feeling that I know already, but incase you haven't read my previous comments, I'm actually new to the total "in business for yourself" thing and for some reason I am doubting myself...

    How much do you usually charge per hour for designing and how much for CSS/pagebuilding??? I'm in Gainesville, Floridaand I want this work, but I dont want to undercharge. This could be a rather lucrative contact. The going rate for design of any kind here is between $25.00 and $40.00 and hour. This would just be straight design, nothing too high end and then slicing/building it out and handing it over to a programmer. I was thinking $30.00 for design and $25.00 for pagebuilding. Does this sound right? I want to set the right tone in pricing with this guy in order to stay consistant and get what I need money wise and not be raped. Help! I have to give the quote tonight!!

  19. new graphical designer needs a conceptual explaination

    Date: 08/21/05     Keywords: web

    So the only kind of web design I have done is with pure code, nothing graphical. so when my new job specified using photoshop and dreamweaver i thought i would try out a photoshop template and see what i can do with it. what i need is more of a conceptual thing: it seems that i need to do the design, including text, for each page in photoshop, save as web and then, in dreamweaver, add any web functionality that i want (links, rollovers, etc.) this is so fdifferent from how i've done it in the past that i want to make sure i understand correctly.

    also, is there a way to make part of the image scrollabe? aka, on a photshop template, have content and text below the image that the user can scroll to? or would that need flash or something else? how are all these things related? here is what i've messed with, so far. it would be nice if the white block with text could scroll so i could put a tall section of images, articles, etc. thanks in advance!

  20. Margins

    Date: 08/21/05     Keywords: css

    (My apologies for posting twice in a row)

    Even with all my margins set to zero, there still seems to be a one-pixel tall length of the background image showing up above my table.

    body CSS has:
    margin: 0px;

    Table CSS has:
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0px;
    border-spacing: 0px;
    width: 799px;
    height: 431px;

    Plus, in the markup I've put a style tag on the table which positions it 0px left and 0px top. Is there something I'm missing?
