a good article about the joys of project management.
i especially like the tip about how to present your designs to the client:
"Your explanation is very important. I have found that clients can have a totally different view of a design without my explanation. My advice is to show your designs in person or over the phone. Do not post the designs and shoot off an e-mail, because you are asking for trouble."

UPDATE on the advice I asked for...
Date: 09/08/05
Keywords: no keywords
First of all thank all of you so much for offering your opinions and advice to me, I really appreciate it. After I spoke to the director over there and let hwe know what was going on she was very surprised. She told me that he was supposed to have had the contract signed already because they chose me. She pleaded (professionally) with me to take the job and offered that she would be my contact from now on. She also requested for me to ad flash work to the quote. He called me as well and formally apologized for "complicating the process". I told her I would let her know by the end of the day today. Any thoughts?

Dreamweaver novice - Help please!
Date: 09/08/05
Keywords: web
Hi there,
I'm new at using Dreamweaver and I'm trying to develop a web page. The problem I am having is getting images to show up, and to get file links to work. On my computer, everything works fine. However, when other people open the file, it doesn't necessarily work.
How can I insert images and link documents to the page and make sure they show up?
Thanks!!

A question for the CSS gurus...
Date: 09/08/05
Keywords: php, css
I'm trying to do nested/threaded commenting system, not unlike what you see here on livejournal, but I really want to do it using CSS + DIV tags instead of using nested tables. Basically, I have a complete comment box that holds all the comments, and then I have a "headers" element that defines the layout of the header. I've been using 'margin-left' to move things to the right by calculating (25 * nested level) as it's value (I'm using PHP). The problem is that moves the whole header outside of the comment box, as shown below:

This is how I want to make it look, though. See, it seems that there's no way to get CSS to calculate the remaining width of the comment box. Or maybe I'm missing something. I want width:100% to mean 100% of what's left after I set margin-left. Basically, like this:

Is there something I'm missing? Should I use a container class and set padding-left instead of using the margin-left value of the comment header? Help me out here, this is driving me nuts!

I need advice...or somehing
Date: 09/07/05
Keywords: programming, templates, web
Help. Tell me what to do.
Sorry in advance for the length...but I have to tell it all:
There is an affilliate of the University of Florida (the major college in my town) called University Press. I got a tip from a business associate to bid on revamping their website. I spoke with him on the phone and got the details...we had a long conversation and I provided him with a quote for design and build out...I excluded programming from the quote because HE is the one in the office who handles that. He was only looking for design and build out. He called me in to talk and we had a long "interview" about the project. He mentioned that I was better prepared then many others he had talked to...so on and so on. He then asked how comfortable I was with plugging everything and programming after I was finished with the design. I am not a programmer at all. I myself could not do that part, but I have resources that could. He put it in such a way that I thought he was just wondering, but that it was no big deal. He then told me that he had a small networking thing going on the side and was often asked about web design. He wanted to know if I was interested in that type of side work. I told him that he could contact me for that of he wanted and I would see what I could do. He sent me a small site re-do to quote out which I did quote. He contacted me and told me that my rates ( $30/hr) were a little high and wanted to know what my "freelance designer" rates were rather then my business rates. ??? They are one in the same in most all cases unless I'm working with someone. I worked with him a little on the price and then he hit me with this...
"I really want to get my business off the ground so you do understand that your name won't be anywhere on the site at all right?" I expressed discomfort with that, but was willing to just put one line at the bottom of the site about design only - I didn't want to discard all credit though. Then he tells me that since I'm not offering programming for UF Press and other bidders were he'd cut me a deal. He said he would put his little company name on the bottom of the site since he was doing the programming (which is his JOB) and mine would not be there at all. UF Press is where he WORKS...his full time job. This site has nothing to do with him personally. He then told me that they were going to hire him to do it, but that he said he didnt want to do the design portion. I found out that he doesn't know how to design or how to use the programs used for design, so he can't do it. I told him that I would gladly quote the programming end if needed, but that I was NOT comfortable with his way of doing things and that I would not relinquish credit for my part. Now I have found myself in a position where he is almost putting himself against me as competition. ????
I just went to his website which a purchased flash template with 3 other purchased templates in the "portfolio" section. He has no clients at all.
Do I go above his head and let them know what he's doing? I am sure they have no clue. It really pissed me off. What do I do? Did I do the right thing? :(

The Importance of Software
Date: 09/07/05
Keywords: software, web
(x-posted)
I still remember a piece of paper that was placed upon the wall in the class of my final year of graphic/web design. It read something like this:
"The best thing to use out of the following is: PhotoShop, Freehand, Flash, GoLive, Quark, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Your Imagination, CorelDRAW, Fireworks, InDesign."
I always enjoyed reading that :-)
On that note, whom of you believe that keeping up to date with the latest software is an absolute necessity, and whom of you believe that it's ok to work in an older package, as long as it gets the job done?

Stock Photos & Tracking
Date: 09/06/05
Keywords: software, web
Would anyone have recommendations for a stock photo site and web tracking software?
I tried iStockphoto.com which is cheap but they are very limited on their photo selection, especially when it comes to minorities, and Webtrends was what I used to use for tracking, but I'm not sure if there is something better out there. This is for a medium-sized non-profit org which gets it's fair share of Internet traffic, however, the stock photos are mainly for the web and not used for any other publications.
Thanks.

in desperate need of some advice
Date: 09/06/05
Keywords: html, web
Hi i'm new to this community.. been reading and watching for a while but never posted in here. I am a beginging webdesigner. have a few clients. Right now though I'm working on a site for www.killerkreations.biz .. and here is my dilemma:
I made the www.killerkreations.biz site and design a while ago and wanted to clean it up so i made www.killerkreations.biz/newsitedesign.htm you get an idea if you go there, click on gallery and then trucks.. thats as far as i got. but my client doesn't like it.. says it's "cartoony" which i can understand. He doesn't want the skulls, just some other design (which i am currently trying to think up something cool looking) so i want i make something clean and simple not as busy and all over the place as the original page. I was pretty happy with the new stuff i did.. but i have to change it. i don't think the client even likes the font i used, which i love :)
so my questions: Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? or any recources they could suggest.. i have some HTML under my belt but i don't know anything else.. and i am trying to learn flash (haha trying). Also, everyone says it's pretty much nessecary that I learn flash.. I want to but am a bit lost on what would be a good program to invest in. so any help there would be awesome too!
also. just your opinions on my work so far would be nice! i don't know any other webdesigners so i could use all the constructive critisim i can get!
Thanks so much
~Danielle

Another inane question from the world of amateur web-developing:
Does anyone have a nice neat bit of code I can use to detect if people have the Shockwave plug-in and, if they don't, direct them to a new page or substiture a graphic?

HTML before PHP?
Date: 08/31/05
Keywords: php, programming, html, asp, java, web
Hi! I'm new to this community.
I am currently a graphic designer taking classes at RISD (Rhode Island
School of Design) for web design and development. I've completed most
of the DESIGN aspects of the certificate program and am working on the
PROGRAMMING/CODING part.
My only experience with programming of any sort comes from these
classes... "Actionscript in Flash" and "Javascript for
Non-programmers." Any other HTML I know is what I've picked up from LJ
and using the dual split screen in Dreamweaver.
I am for sure enrollling in the HTML class. But the PHP class I want
to take (two in one semester would be ideal) has an HTML prereq.
Can I handle it?
How hard is learning PHP?
Should I take the two classes simultaneously this fall semester?
Or should I take the HTML class, let it soak in until next spring, and then do the PHP?
Pros to PHP now...
1) I know someone in the class
2) I'd hopefully be able to incorporate what I learn into a website I'm supposed to create this fall...
Cons to PHP now...
1) Getting totally and completely lost and not learning anything from the class...
Thanks for your help and opinions. I'd really appreciate it!

Need designers!!!
Date: 08/31/05
Keywords: web
I am looking for web-designers. A friend of mine and I are starting a design company. I am going to be doing back-ends using SiMX's Target platform (www.simx.com) and she will be securing clients and handling the PR.
We would like to create a library of designers to present to our clients + we need a design for our site (black+gold preferred, but not imperative).
1. If you send us a mock-up design and we choose you, you become one of our primary designers (naturally). We are running on a tight budget so would prefer if this was a free gig that would take exposure as compensation (read on for why this might be worth it).
2. If you send us a mock-up and we don't choose it, but like it, it will be added to our library and you will be called upon if one of our clients likes your work.
3. You are also welcome to send us your portfolio, a link to which would be posted on our site if we like it.
About the venture: I have been working with SiMX on a platform (TARGET) for rapid data-driven web-app development. The competitive edge will be in the speed with which applications will be developed and adjusted to our clients' needs. Statistically, TARGET accelerates development by 3-5 times, but this will increase as the platform evolves. It has already been used to deliver services for companies ranging from small business to Fortune 500 clients. Check out some demos at www.simx.com/simx/home_demos.htm
I am hoping that this venture will turn into an active web-development workshop.
About my partner: she's a Japanese model with, what looks like, pretty extensive connections and good business presence. That combined with the speed with which applications will be developed may be a perfect blend.
Also, if you could recommend good web-design communities/resources for either contacts or designs, I would be greatful.
Please feel free to contact me at nikita@simx.com
