As I look for alternative employment I see a lot of wanted ads asking for a web designer who are proficient in several web-programming languages (they usually specify PHP/ASP/CGI-Perl), the use of several different databasing formats (Access, SQL of some sort, Oracle) - proficient in several different forms of design (Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, FreeHand, Quark, etc) as well as being a master of JavaScript, XHTML, XML, DHTML, CSS and any other acronym they seem to have found on google.

To me this sounds like they are asking for a web-design team wrapped into one person. Am I crazy; or are they?

I usually design small shopping carts with CoolCart and make the buttons and stuff myself, but I have a client that may change things a lot once the site goes live.

I'd say 50 - 75 items max over 5 or 6 catagories. The client should be able to login to a admin screen, create the information or change the info about a product, upload a thumbnail and post the price.

Running ASP in the design at the moment but open to PHP.

Anyone have a suggestion for something that can be purchased or is 3rd party but is seamless with the site that is being designed?

Ok, I'm pretty much at a loss here. I've got a database (SQL Server 2000) that I'm trying to connect to using an xsd DataSet using VS 2005. I've built it and it works for everything I've been trying to do so far in this application, and several others, until now. What I'm trying to do is do a very simple search inside one of the fields, so that my users can find all the names of the people whose names begin with a certain letter. The commandText I created for the method is simple:

SELECT     dbo.Personal.*
FROM         dbo.Personal
WHERE LastName LIKE @SearchText

Pretty simple, I thought. The code I use to bind the results to a data grid is:

gvListing.DataSource = tblPersonal.GetDataByLastName(txtSearchText.Text & "%")

Now, the "interesting" things begin. When I search for a user's last name using only the first letter, I don't get any rows returns. However, if I do a search for something like "S%%%", it will return all the names in the database that have 5 characters in them.

I was under the impression that the % was the zero or more wildcard for SQL Server databases, but this is making me thing that ASP.NET is translating it as a single character wildcard. I've also tried using * instead of %, but it never returns a result, same with ?. I'm at a loss here, so any insight on how to get this simple search to work would be wonderful/

I have seen the glory that is css/div/non-table based design. I'm a big fan of valid XHTML. I just suck at it.

And while I'm more than willing to broaden/improve my skills, I'm trying to put together a new forum. I'm looking at phpbb themes and I want to cry. The design is just atrocious.

Is there any chance I could enlist someone's aid in putting together a phpbb style for a new forum I'm doing?

I'd also really like the templates to be fully xhtml/css compliant, but that can be split into two tasks. One task is developing the artwork, which can simply be putting together a sliced psd file, and the other is making the templates. If you have artistic skills, or xhtml/css skills, I can use your help either way. (I understand this community is more focused on the coding of web-design, but that doesn't mean the members here aren't possibly good resources in other aspects of web-design).

I found one theme that uses css/div-based/non-table design, and it is for SMF, not PHPBB, and sadly much of the functionality I need I can only really find in PHPBB hacks. But it does go to show that even when working around clunky forum content, it can be done. (If anyone cares, I'm talking about the Endar Theme for SMF)

I'd like to break up the layout with some white space, move navigation tabs on the left, and utilize non-standard lines to break up the usual boxy layout of phpbb.

The artist who helps me would obviously still own the work and would decide distribution rights of it as they wish.

I am also willing to throw a few bones at whomever helps me, but I'm also largely broke.

hey guys,

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post. I am still on the same project, but this time I'm trying to do something else. Namely, to use the FileSystemObject to create a script that is going to make brand new HTML pages (based on a template on a dynamic page.) But before creating the pages it will allow the user to look at the server directory (which sounds kind of like what you could do if this were an FTP app) and let them select the resources to appear at certain locations on the template (and that's kind of like a picture gallery app.) I'm working with ASP (classic right now, but I might have to switch to ASP.NET.) Some of the functionality is easy to nail down, but others, like getting the directory structure to be viewable on the browser window, boggles my mind. Do you have any recs or know of any useful apps for any of the aspects of this project?

How do I keep the registered entries unique like say...make sure no two people get the same login name? My 'loginname' variable in my database is data type nvarchar(50). Okay, I'm still getting the grasp of php... I went off for a while to actually learn html... Okay, well. I'm having the most troubles with mysql. It's quite confusing, along with cookies. Anyways, this isn't going to be about cookies. I want to just know how I can somehow get a nice list of... everything. Somehow. I really want know what's IN my mysql database and what names, etc. I'm using a pre-made script, so I'm rummaging around in circles with no straight answers on what what is.

hey guys,

I'm getting a tooltip from a button implementation in VS2005 that is driving me crazy.

Here is my code:

Private Sub AddNewDir_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles AddNewDir.Click

The tip appears when you hove over Click. It says: "Even 'click' cannot be found."

I don't understand why this is happening. Could it be that I am not inheriting the proper namespaces? My class only Inherits System.Web.UI.Page.



Edit: figured this out with help from MSDN. My error was I wasn't using the "asp:Button" syntax in the web form. I was creating the buttons as I was used to in the HTML, with "input type='button'" format. So, no wonder the codebehind file was throwing that error.

К чему я это пишу?  Всё просто, этими знаниями я зарабатываю до $2500 в месяц работая только дома по несколько часов в день. Ну хорошо, я вру. Этого Вы ждали?:) Я работаю не по 2 часа, а по 3-5 часов в день. Но это всё равно не 8-12 часов, как я работал раньше на дядю. И получал я за это тогда около 500 долларов.

Как добиться большей зарплаты?
Наверняка большая половина здесь присутствующих работает на дядю за зарплату. И из этих людей найдется всего несколько человек которых размер этой зарплаты устраивает. Да и эти несколько человек не отказались бы получать больше. Впрочем, любой человек хочет комфортнее обустроить свой быт, лучше обеспечить семью, купить себе наконец мощный ноутбук, хорошо покушать. сделать евроремонт в квартире, или купить наконец эту самую квартиру, отдохнуть на хороших курортах и т.д. Любой человек стремиться заработать больше. Именно в этом я и хочу Вам помочь. Знаю Ваш вопрос: Зачем это лично мне? Опять же - всё просто.  Там где зарабатываю я работы хватит на всех и надолго. Мне нет смысла скрывать эту тему. Сам я всё равно не справлюсь со всеми заказами. Так как заказчиков и проектов для работы очень много. Грубо говоря - хватит на всех :)


Ну и что с этим делать?

I've been wondering about web-related technology certifications that might be worth my while. yes, I know experience is invaluable when it comes to enhancing a resume, but I also wouldn't mind having a solid certification in a web-related area. I'm not referring to web design degrees as I already have an associates degree (interactive multimedia) and I had been working towards a second web dev degree that may someday lead to a bachelors. so my questions on web certifications:

are there organizations/sites that are more highly regarded than others for what they have to offer?
what are some good ones?
what are some reputable/credible web certifications out there that you have, or know of?

I've only done a brief search so far, but I have noticed the HTML certification that w3schools has to offer:

My National Security Letter Gag Order

It is the policy of The Washington Post not to publish anonymous pieces. In this case, an exception has been made because the author -- who would have preferred to be named -- is legally prohibited from disclosing his or her identity in connection with receipt of a national security letter. The Post confirmed the legitimacy of this submission by verifying it with the author's attorney and by reviewing publicly available court documents.


The Justice Department's inspector general revealed on March 9 that the FBI has been systematically abusing one of the most controversial provisions of the USA Patriot Act: the expanded power to issue "national security letters." It no doubt surprised most Americans to learn that between 2003 and 2005 the FBI issued more than 140,000 specific demands under this provision -- demands issued without a showing of probable cause or prior judicial approval -- to obtain potentially sensitive information about U.S. citizens and residents. It did not, however, come as any surprise to me.


Three years ago, I received a national security letter (NSL) in my capacity as the president of a small Internet access and consulting business. The letter ordered me to provide sensitive information about one of my clients. There was no indication that a judge had reviewed or approved the letter, and it turned out that none had. The letter came with a gag provision that prohibited me from telling anyone, including my client, that the FBI was seeking this information. Based on the context of the demand -- a context that the FBI still won't let me discuss publicly -- I suspected that the FBI was abusing its power and that the letter sought information to which the FBI was not entitled.

Rather than turn over the information, I contacted lawyers at the American Civil Liberties Union, and in April 2004 I filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the NSL power. I never released the information the FBI sought, and last November the FBI decided that it no longer needs the information anyway. But the FBI still hasn't abandoned the gag order that prevents me from disclosing my experience and concerns with the law or the national security letter that was served on my company. In fact, the government will return to court in the next few weeks to defend the gag orders that are imposed on recipients of these letters.

Living under the gag order has been stressful and surreal. Under the threat of criminal prosecution, I must hide all aspects of my involvement in the case -- including the mere fact that I received an NSL -- from my colleagues, my family and my friends. When I meet with my attorneys I cannot tell my girlfriend where I am going or where I have been. I hide any papers related to the case in a place where she will not look. When clients and friends ask me whether I am the one challenging the constitutionality of the NSL statute, I have no choice but to look them in the eye and lie.

I resent being conscripted as a secret informer for the government and being made to mislead those who are close to me, especially because I have doubts about the legitimacy of the underlying investigation.

The inspector general's report makes clear that NSL gag orders have had even more pernicious effects. Without the gag orders issued on recipients of the letters, it is doubtful that the FBI would have been able to abuse the NSL power the way that it did. Some recipients would have spoken out about perceived abuses, and the FBI's actions would have been subject to some degree of public scrutiny. To be sure, not all recipients would have spoken out; the inspector general's report suggests that large telecom companies have been all too willing to share sensitive data with the agency -- in at least one case, a telecom company gave the FBI even more information than it asked for. But some recipients would have called attention to abuses, and some abuse would have been deterred.

I found it particularly difficult to be silent about my concerns while Congress was debating the reauthorization of the Patriot Act in 2005 and early 2006. If I hadn't been under a gag order, I would have contacted members of Congress to discuss my experiences and to advocate changes in the law. The inspector general's report confirms that Congress lacked a complete picture of the problem during a critical time: Even though the NSL statute requires the director of the FBI to fully inform members of the House and Senate about all requests issued under the statute, the FBI significantly underrepresented the number of NSL requests in 2003, 2004 and 2005, according to the report.

I recognize that there may sometimes be a need for secrecy in certain national security investigations. But I've now been under a broad gag order for three years, and other NSL recipients have been silenced for even longer. At some point -- a point we passed long ago -- the secrecy itself becomes a threat to our democracy. In the wake of the recent revelations, I believe more strongly than ever that the secrecy surrounding the government's use of the national security letters power is unwarranted and dangerous. I hope that Congress will at last recognize the same thing.
