1. Need help in regards to Pay Pal

    Date: 11/29/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: asp

I was wondering if you would be able to help
me out. Right now I’m in the process of putting together an on-line
Catalogue to sell clothes on the net; I am having
Problems with one aspect of the catalogue, shipping. it seems pay pal doesn't
Support the method i wish to use. Basically I have six different options for
Shipping (Canada post, Canada express, USA post, USA express, international
Post, international express) each one having a different cost; I would like
To have it so that the buyer, after selecting the options for the item, then
Selects the proper shipping option, based on where they live and how fast
    they want it.

    Thanks in advance :)

  2. Contact Page - Language Change?

Date: 12/01/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: asp, web

I have a contact page in .asp on a website for a client. The company is based in Canada, so I built the site in English and am now translating the site into French. (Well, changing everything so it is French, sadly my French skills let me read, but not write.) Anyway... everything is going well, but I need to change the "send" button on the page to an "envoyer" button.

The button and text are created by the script, so I would like to avoid having to place an image there. Does anyone know how to get the text from "send" to "envoyer"?

Please help... I've never had to do this before.

    Thank you!

ETA, 11.06pm: Well, just changing the script value from "send" to "envoyer" seems to be working. Need to upload it to the server to check for certain, but that seems to be it. Easy fix.

    Thanks for the help!

  3. Build a good C2D system for a good price

Date: 12/02/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html, asp, jsp, google

I got suckered into building a C2D system by my employer's discount program. I did my research- maybe someone else could also put it to good use.

This is for a Core 2 Duo E6300-based gaming system that is designed to be moderately overclocked, with good options for future upgrades.

First, the two reasons that I even needed the system:

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (there was a deal for $20 on amazon a few days back.)
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000G6XH1W

    Acer AL2016w 20" 1680 x 1050 widescreen LCD monitor $248.37@Burgess

Oblivion + large-ish monitor = must get a fast system or else

Intel® Core 2 Duo E6300 Processor $183.90@Zipzoomfly (price dropped again!)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler $24.99@Directron

    http://www.directron.com/acfz7pro.html
Vertical design with air also blowing over the adjacent chipset, important for overclocking

Foxconn P9657AA-8KS2H Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard $99.99@Newegg

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186102
Supposedly one of the fastest value P965 boards. Good overclocking features for the price.

    A-DATA 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit $114.99@Newegg
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820211064
With heat spreader for overclocking. Red plate, looks cool.

    XFX GeForce 7900GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card $139.99@Newegg(price w/$40 rebate)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150208
For high resolution/HD or dual monitor gaming

    Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200rpm 300MBps Serial ATA II - SATA/300 Hard disk $64.28@Buy.com(price w/ Google Checkout)
    http://www.buy.com/prod/Seagate_Barracuda_7200_9_Hard_Drive_250GB_7200rpm_300MBps_Serial_ATA/q/loc/101/202153107.html
You wouldn't want the system to hiccup when it loads something in the middle of a game

Powmax 803 Turbo Black and Silver ATX Side Window Case w/ 450 Watt PSU (all-steel gaming case) $37.99@3B Tech
    http://3btech.net/po803tubland2.html
Need front/rear fans plus one on the side to deal with overclocking. The power supply is adequate unless you are planning for dual-graphics cards with SLI/Crossfire setup, in which case 500w would be a safer bet. I just like the case because it looks cool with the lights. I mean- Since I'm spending this much money already, why skimp on the packaging?

As for DVD-ROM burner, I'll let you hunt for it yourself because there are too many choices for cheapo ones, depending on the speed.

Final Damage: around $700 without a monitor
(high-end sound card and audio hardware extra if you don't already have them)

This is not bad at all considering what you're getting. While you are not going to win benchmark competitions with this (you'll need Core 2 Duo X6800 w/ unlocked multi along with a monster gfx set to do that) you will get something that plays games very fast and smoothly with a lot of the eye candy turned on at high resolutions.

  4. curl options

Date: 12/11/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: html, asp

i use curl to talk to our local mls system (EXCITING!). this is the relevant part of the function i use to, in this case, perform a search:

when i run a script that uses this function, i get

    # Netscape HTTP Cookie File
    # http://www.netscape.com/newsref/std/cookie_spec.html
    # This file was generated by libcurl! Edit at your own risk.

    rets15.raprets.com FALSE / FALSE 0 RETS-Session-ID blah1019181817161514131211zzzzz

    USEFUL OUTPUT

i know this is really nitpicky, but is there anyway to suppress the, "Netscape HTTP Cookie File," stuff (while still using the cookie i've generated)? i'm not echo'ing anything ever, it just spits that out to the console everytime the function fires... and uh, i don't like it.

  5. WANTED: form generator.

Date: 12/14/06 (Javascript Community)    Keywords: asp, web

@ my work i have started placing messages on accounts in which mail has bounced back. so a typical message would look like:

NEEDS ADDRESS AND ID: 1234 BromhanWay, UT 8116 was returned undeliverable 11-21-2006. The envelope was marked as "No Such Number".

The problem is, I don't want to have to type this message out every time and editing, copying and pasting is cumbersome and has the potential to give mistakes back to me.

So, what I would like to do is have a simply box fill in for various field and then have it post back immediately on the same webpage the results.

    ie.

NEEDS ADDRESS AND ID: was returned undeliverable . The envelope was marked as .

Then you would enter the data in the boxes and click

The page would then put all the data in a box below for easy copy/paste access:

This is the only resource I have found thus far on it:

  6. Laptop beeping

Date: 12/17/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: asp

So I just got a new laptop on Tuesday. First laptop ever. It's an Acer aspire 3100. It beeps at me. It will just randomly beep. It's not coming from the speakers, its coming from inside the laptop. Also I don't think one of the bottom parts is screwed on properly but I don't have a screwdriver and am wayyy too afraid to try and take it apart. Could the thing on the bottom not being on properly be causing it to beep? or is it something else?
    Thanks

  7. Layout help

Date: 12/17/06 (HTML Help)    Keywords: html, asp, security

I found some LiveJournal layouts that I adore...the only problem is that I like certain aspects of each of those layouts.

    • I like the layout of this one

    • The background of this one

    • And, just to make things more complicated, I wanted to fit this banner in somewhere

So, I fiddled with the overrides, using W3Schools as my security blanket because I am by no means an HTML expert. I also used '[info]'overridehelp to help with fitting in my header, using both this, this and this.

After fiddling for hours, my journal is a mess. I have a couple questions:

    • Can these layouts even be combined?

    • If so...

      • How can I make the tabs fit below the banner?

      • How can I move the default icon to be in line with the sidebar?

      • How can I move the sidebar?

      • How can I center the entries and the sidebar?

    Thank you!

  9. An intro

Date: 12/17/06 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: php, programming, asp, sql, linux, google

    Hi everyone,

I thought before I go any further I'd ask approval, and give a bit of a background on myself.

in 2000, I was working for blue chip clients as an asp programmer, and then discovered I had chronic Lyme disease, which I am currently under treatment for, but its left me with a six year gap in knowledge, Yes I've gone back to the Olde Faithfull Wrox books, MSDN etc for .net2 but I am finding so much has changed, I am fairly competent with C++ asp, VBscript and ECMA C# is completely new to me!

to get me back to programming I bought a 2nd user server, which is running 2k3 enterprise ed. and have a 2nd machine running mssql 2005, I installed Visual Studio Pro, and thought that a couple of the Starter kits would prove a good place to start, oh How wrong I have been!

Firstly: I tried theBeerHouse kit, hmmn, yes it runs on Localhost, but will the blasted thing run on a inbound connection Will it heck, I've trawled google for answers, worked arround issues, damn it I could have written the lot in asp quicker! or even as a Com+ application. I thought .net2 was supposed to be easier.

But alas I think not unless I am completely missing something, the last thing I want to do is learn PHP! I'd rather eat a linux computer first!!

So whats your advise for someone getting back into this, where did you start and if you have an indespensible book what is it?

  10. Using ASP in CSS

Date: 12/19/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, css, asp, web

I decided recently to tidy up my CSS for a web app that the company I work for is building. What I decided to do was gather up all the colours used and give them variable names so that if I, say, want to change the shade of grey that is "lightgrey" I can just do it once instead of hunting for all instances of #CCCCCC, for example.

I wasn't thinking last night and went and did this in PHP... the app is written in ASP. D'oh! What extension should I use and how do I link in a CSS file with ASP code in it?

  11. info gathering form for new clients

Date: 01/02/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: asp, web

    happy new year buddies

does anyone have a form they use to give potential new clients looking for websites? like an info gathering form like "what kind of look and feel, how many pages do you need, what kind of timeline" etc? i'm realizing i need to start getting more info from my clients before i start work.

i know i've seen one of these forms before i just can't remember where.
    thanks.

edit: i've found this http://www.rgdontario.com/lookItUp/publications/handbook/default.asp but the design/client brief form isn't that detailed.

  12. Revisit

Date: 01/08/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, asp, security, web

Hey folks, I originally poster here concerning a Faculty/Staff site where I would have multiple pages and such.

Well, after speaking with our IT guy, (it's a bass ackwards process by the way, I'm the webmaster, but I have to give the IT guy all my files so he can upload them.) he says that we have no SSI/A available due to... more or less 'analness.' The school I work for is more than paranoid about net security and etc etc etc. So, that rules out PHP/ASP/anything really because they simply refuse to support it. So any suggestions from this point?

    To reiterate:
About 70ish faculty and staff pages, each member having his own page. The design and layout remain the same except for an image and copy.

    Thanks all.

Sometimes the picture quality is bad, like it's solarized (is that the right term?) and the colour quality isn't that good. I'm also disliking the fixed resolution aspect.

    hey guys,

I'm a student and right now I'm cramming up on a subject that has a lot of vocabulary terms. I've done all I can to grasp them but I think my old methods have reached their limits, frustration took over and I threw my flash cards out the window. Now I'm looking to start afresh with some new approach. Maybe there is some kind of software that lets you enter words and phrases, then enter definitions, and then flash them on the screen of your computer. Or something like that. Basically, I'm looking for suggestions on any helpful application you may know about.

  18. mysql connection pooling per script execution

Date: 01/28/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, mysql, asp, sql

I try not to be authoritive on anything until I got documentation to back me up and at the last minute of work on Friday I ran into a problem. One of the core programmers in my team is a recovering .net/asp developer who is still getting upto speed on PHP. He's got the block and tackle idea's but of course you can't become a master at a new language until you've had atleast one or two nervous breakdowns because the new language isn't doing what the other languages did. thedailywtf.com also helps.

Anyway: to the point. My understanding of the mysql library in PHP core is that it tries it's best to recycle instances to the server between different instances. So if script A is run by 10+ different people, php mysql is going to try and share. Apparently this is not true in .net (version unknown). My coworker got called in to fix a wtf script that would slowly devour all available connections to the DB because the last developer didn't close the connections. So he wrote this really amazing and really elaborate wrapper class that I don't think is necessary but I am not completely sure.

Basically, on wrapper creation, it checks a flag for "in_use" and if true, creates a new mysql_connect resource handle. This scares me because if I really understand it... the wrapper could create a dozen handles to the DB in one cycle of script execution then multiply that by number of individual script executions and this could be bad? Or am I wrong. Is the php mysql_ smart enough not to shoot us in the foot?

The original plan was for the DB wrapper to be used like so.

    FrameworkObject->getDb("db name");

this then skims through an array structured like:

    $dbc['db name'] = array('info'=>'This is the general db connection', 'server'=>'my.server.com', 'account'=>'myUserName','password'=>'pw','flags'=>NULL,'INT'=>NULL);

    The key is the $dbc['db name']['INT'] which would hold the resource handle to the wrapper. Voila, instant conservation of resource handles. Then the trick is just to put in the DB::__destruct() a mysql_close();

Or am I wrong as well? or are we both wrong in ways not understood just yet?
