Why “Haloscan Sucks” (Free Commetning System for Blogs)

I have been exploring externally managed commenting systems (example) and so I revisited Haloscan (registered in my blogger blogging days). The funniest part was their support forum. Their answers are distributed thinly across the forum. A consolidation post, by a “satisfied customer”, will aptly illustrate the challenges of using Haloscan.

Dynamic Content
Date: 06/29/06
(Web Development) Keywords: blogging, rss, software, database, web
I’m looking into how one would set up an RSS feed a smallish website for fun/learning. I think my preferred method is to have a function that is called when the journal is updated that generates a static RSS page, rather than have the RSS feed query the database itself.
I like this method because an RSS feed isn’t really what I think of when I think dynamic content – it’s the same for every visitor. If you have 50-100 visitors between updates, you just saved yourself 49-99 database calls. It also feels more secure. If you’re querying a database, there is potential to fall victim to a injection attack. Well, the point where one updated the journal is still vulnerable, but that’s true in either method.
I was looking at how some of the blogging software generates RSS, but they all query the database directly from the feed. Is there something I’m missing? Why is this method so overwhelmingly preferred?

I am working on a blogging site. I would like to add a wysiwyg editor for users when they are creating a post. I've seen this around on a few sites like blogger and xanga. I've also played with writely. However, I'm not sure exactly how this are implemented and what the drawbacks are. Is there anyone out there that can share their experiences with this sort of thing?

Darren of ProBlogger has an interesting idea for group thoughts. What if I were to start blogging again? What would I do different? Here are my two cents…
1. Write as regularly as possible
2. Write more
3. Add a contact form upfront
4. Start with my own domain upfront. I wasted two years from 2001-2003 blogging at blogspot. [...]

Is Blogging Unproductive For INTP’s and Code Monkeys?
Date: 09/14/06
(Java Web) Keywords: blogging
I am an INTP. And frankly blogging often makes me tired, very tired. I like thinking, deep thoughts, product ideas, philosophical ideas, and even explaining it to any intelligent person. But I don’t like talking about it all the time. INTP’s need to regenerate after a talking session. Blogging somehow compels you to “talk” more [...]

Google Venturing In Blogging? … Hiring Bloggers?

Need Help

(WebDesign) Keywords: php, mysql, blogging, sql
I need some help. I am working on my layout for my site. However, when I add the "blogging" tool that I am using with PHP the whole layout becomes wacked and out of order, I can't seem to figure it out.
http://www.silence-stars.net/ (correct way)
That is my site, its fine now, but if add the "blog" to the site, it becomes wacked.
http://www.silence-stars.net/test.php
Maybe I need another pair of eyes, maybe one of you can help me decipher where my problem is.
But all in all, I need some critique on my site, what are your opinions?
Edit
Blogging tool is Cutenews. My site doesn't support MySQL so I can't use wordpress, or anything like it.

How should I align nav bars between pages?
Date: 02/16/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: blogging, software, css, html, web
I am not a web developer by trade or experience; I'm most familiar with blogging software for online publishing and layout than I am with hand coding or what I think of as "hard" development. That said, I created this site with Dreamweaver and based its layout and design on a template they provided.
I can't, however, seem to get the page title and nav bars aligned between the index page and the others (e.g. vs photos or vs details). Could someone please suggest what I need to clean up in there to make them line up properly?
Further to that point, I see from the HTML that the pages are set up with tables. Isn't that considered sort of passé, now? Aren't the hip developers using DIVs and CSS to set up tabular or columnar or whatever layouts they conceive for their pages? And if so, how do I do that myself?
Also (no flames please), can you set these up with a WYSIWYG interface like Dreamweaver? Or is the code just so damned neat and tidy that it's no more hassle to do it by hand? I'm open to that too, if it's really not hard to learn. You see, I have two kids. Which means no spare time. :)

blogs? developing--
Date: 02/24/07
(WebDesign) Keywords: blogging, web
I have a former/current client and he suddenly wants a blog. I have no experience with setting up a blog site from scratch and am trying to find some quick tutorials on how to make this guy a blog site using his already existing two web sites (and host) but I need to make it VERY easy for him to update and manage on his own.
This guy is REALLY slow when it comes to computers (i had to walk him thru the process of checking his web-based email and have spent many hours on the phone just teaching him how to navigate certain web pages.) I'm wondering if I'd be better off to just create a customized blog for him on one of the many developer-hosted blogging sites and be done with it. If so, is there a particular blogging site that is best for someone in the health field? I've only dabbled with Blogger and LJ.
any tutorials or suggestions are welcome!

Where Can I Find an Out-of-the-Box Rich Text Editor?
Date: 02/26/07
(Web Development) Keywords: blogging, software, database, web
Hey guys,
I'm trying to put together a project in which users will be able to interface with a rich text input editor, kind of like what you see when you click the "rich text" tab on the Update page of Livejournal; that would allow a user to insert images, create link anchors, etc.
More generally, though, I'm trying to figure out in this project a way to let some users of my website to be able to create new pages and modify them using this rich text interface. You may ask, why not use a blogging tool? The reason I'm not using Wordpress or other blog software is unfortunately I cannot use a database in this project (don't ask), and those tools practically demand one. I can use a folder and file structure. So now you know the outlines of my challenge.
What do you think are the odds of creating a system like this without a database? I initially figured it would be a piece of cake until I stopped to think of how and where the data would be stored, etc.
Moreover, do you know any out of the box apps to use in this project?
I know a few people here contributed to Wordpress and other open source projects like Geeklog. I'd appreciate your input.
Thank you!
