CMS
Date: 01/19/06

I am writing an open source cms called Rade (intended for release), and want to store images in the MySQL database; MediaWiki's upload system sounds suspiciously insecure, and makes storing metadata harder. However, I have read that blobs in SQL databases decrease their performance. Should I store the images in another table? Another database?

php frameworks and such
Date: 01/09/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: cms, php, html, database, security, web
Hey all,
I know there's been a couple posts about this recently, so if I'm asking redundant questions, sorry.
A friend of mine has come up with a pretty novel idea for a MySpace-ish site, but for a specific niche market (kind of like those CatSpace and DogSpaces that exist) - users will have profiles, photos, a blog, message boards, send friend requests, yadda yadda yadda, you've seen it all before. I'm going to be developing the initial setup myself (since we have no money), and this is a somewhat long term project that I'll be picking at casually for a little while.
Right now I'm trying to figure out if I should give this a go coding from scratch, or use an existing CMS type solution (like Mambo, Joomla, Drupal, etc). I'd really like to code it myself, as I think it could be a fun project to work on. I'm a pretty solid PHP programmer, but as I have a feeling that this idea could jump in popularity pretty quick, I really want to make sure I keep this thing as efficient as possible for a large user base. For instance, I don't want to go making another MySpace which I think runs horribly as a web app compared to even LiveJournal.
Currently I use PEAR's DB_DataObject or my database interactions and I've just gotten into Smarty for templating, though I'm sure I'm not using either to their fullest potential. I saw mention of a couple of development environments and frameworks in someone's recent post looking for a visual studio-esque PHP environment - http://www.livejournal.com/community/php/388602.html but I've never used any of these.
I'm not really concerned here with using a "rapid development" framework - I don't mind coding, I like it - but what I'm really concerned with is stability, efficiency and security - I know of course that these also rely heavily on how well I code, and using a good coding environment or framework won't do the coding for me, but there have to be some tools/frameworks/etc out there that pros are using that I just haven't moved onto yet, and I wanted to see what you guys (and gals) are using on some of your bigger projects.
- I know this comes up a bunch, but does anyone else think would it be handy at all for us as a community to maybe organize some of the more useful threads and frequently asked (and answered) questions in the php community at a separate location? Doing just a search on the community doesn't necessarily give you anything about the quality of the responses, and it may even be nice to be able to 'browse' solutions/posts by categories or something; maybe we could have some sort of quality ranking on posts, or some way to identify posts that contain questions that get asked all the time. I don't think this would be too tricky to put together, and I'd be willing to work on it, but I don't know if anyone would even use it?

two very stupid questions...
Date: 01/06/06
(Web Development) Keywords: cms, hosting
bear with me... this is not my realm of expertise.
i've been asked to look into putting a mailing list on a site. i assume there is some kind of cookie cutter way to do this, but i don't know what that is... i'd like to be able to A) have some/complete control over how it looks and b)not have to pay anyone to have a mailing list.
also...
i was told by a friend that i could use modify moveable type stuff to create what is essentially a CMS, but i don't know how to find out if my hosting company (hostony) supports this. actually, i know very little about moveable type in general.
anyone who is feeling very kind who could explain any of this to me would be my best friend forever. thanks.

Full text based search SQL
Date: 12/18/05
(MySQL Communtiy) Keywords: cms, php, sql
How do you make your site searches? I am constructing (yet another) CMS of late and am once again at the issue of searching. I am trying to build an SQL statement that will do a full text search of looking in several fields and then ranks each return so they can then be ordered by that before looping them out in php.
How do other people do this? have you found a particular way of doing this that you find works well. My current solution isn’t the most efficient method out there.
Thanks

CMS

(PHP Community) Keywords: cms, php, mysql, asp, sql, web
Following up from my last post, are there any good CMSes out there for a really small site?
I mostly use my personal site as a support resource for online roleplaying games that I run, but I'm tired of needing to upload to the site by FTP whenever I want to change one little thing on a page. At the same time, I like have a visual basis for character sheets and so on... (http://www.patchwolf.com/phoenixcrusade/terpsichore.php for an example). I'd also like to give my players the chance to add stuff directly to the site -- kind of like a wiki.
Of particular concern are the character sheets, where I'd like to still be able to change one detail (like the current form aspect on the example sheet -- currently controlled by an in-page variable), which then affects several other aspects (strength, stamina, health, etc....)
A good mate of mine uses Qwikiwiki (http://www.qwikiwiki.com), which uses a flat-file system -- but if I want to have a hope of maintaining a visual basis on any part of the site, Qwikiwiki's not going to cut it. While I have PHP and MySQL on my web host, I don't actually
run the server myself, so that's also something to take into consideration.
Any ideas?

i've inherieted a project that isn't well-documented, and am having trouble figuring out what it's doing. the user will click through something like http://www.cms.net/manage.php?reset_id=900. manage.php makes no mention of reset_id, but there are several include files. those include files include other files, and all of them are big and messy. i need to change what's happening when the reset_id flag is sent, but i can't find where that's being handled. is there any way to trace this so i can figure out what file is actually doing the work?

win32reg.exe problem

Yesterday, my roomy's 'puter kept freezing up. AVG found 2 viruses but it closed out and she didn't know what they were or where they went.
I attempted to run Ad-Aware but everytime it starts running, the computer restarts. So, I deleted all of the programs in the Control Panel that she didn't need, deleted the cookies, deleted all of the internet files she didn't need, restarted, and the computer seemed to work fine.
However, today she said "Win32reg.exe" keeps popping up a screen. I had already installed Google's Toolbar and so that is the same pop up blocker she uses. I ran Hijack This and got this:

MySQL/PHP connection error
Date: 02/26/06
(PHP Community) Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, sql, hosting
I programmed a CMS for one of my client and put it up on my own site in a test directory while it was in development. It was working just fine. They finally got their own hosting set up with Network Solutions so I uploaded all my files, set up the database and changed the username, password and db name in my scripts. Now I'm getting the following error: Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock'
I've double checked that I have the right username and the right password.
I'm using the following code to connect: $link = mysql_connect('localhost', $user, $pass) or die("Could not connect : " . mysql_error());
When I log into phpMyAdmin I see the following: MySQL 4.1.16-log running on localhost as eclipse@localhost so I'm assuming that 'localhost' is right. What else could be wrong? I've tried emailing tech support at Network Solutions but I doubt anyone there will get back to me. It's a pretty basic error but i can't figure out what else I would've needed to change when switching the site from my server to theirs.

PHP vs ASP vs ???
Date: 05/31/06
(Web Development) Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, asp, sql, security, web
Hi all, a quick question.
I use PHP mostly because it's the only web language I know well enough to do what I need to do on a daily basis, but my place of employment is considering redesigning the web site - and letting me have control over how it's developed and in what languages, etc. Is there any advantage of using ASP over PHP, or any other language over another? I integrate a lot with a database (MySQL) (calendars, event listings, internship databases, video archive, etc) and currently run on a Sun box, but I also need to integrate (in the future) with a SQL database on an IIS server, which required me to develop in ASP. I didn't know ASP so we had to contract it out, and I'd rather avoid doing that again in the future - unless there's an added security benefit to asp or something like that. Opinions anyone, on what language to use vs another, or any opinions on a sort of "dream set up" (including CMS - I've never used a third party so recommendations would be interesting) I might be able to go after?
Thanks everyone!

Dear all,
I need some info.
This is our company website. It is a big old mess structure wise. There is no CMS or anything useful like that and the architechture/navigation is terrifying. It's a serious nightmare to update (especially for me trying to navigate asp!!) and it needs to be more user friendly.
I am trying to recommend a course of action that is going to be cost effective (ie. the lower cost, the better) going forward. I think that it would be great to get a content management system in place since we're hoping to use the website a lot more extensively in the future. This would not be difficult since it's barely been touched since it's creation.
My questions are:
- A good, basic, cheap CMS - can someone recommend one?
- Having a quick look at the site, would we benefit having an Information Architecht help?
- Any other suggestions
Thankee!

Web Developers: How easy is it to set up Drupal for a site?
Date: 08/05/06
(WebDesign) Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, sql, web, hosting, shopping
Sooo, I am 98% sure I'm taking on a client where I need to implement a CMS for him to make changes to the site if necessary. When I first wrote the quote a few months ago, I suggested Drupal as the CMS because it was free, looked rather customizable and somewhat easy to use. I have limited experience writing PHP and dealing with MySQL databases but understand the mechanics of it.
This particular client is offering subscriptions to a database of business industry contacts. There will be about 500 contacts on the pay list (including name, office, affiliation, etc) and he will add to the list about every three months or so. What he will change on a regular monthly basis will be the articles he writes. The subscription concept then requires a shopping cart/check out system as well as a password/username management system for each user.
Would Drupal be a good way to go for both my client and for me? Also, I'm switching web hosts and am considering becoming a reseller. Is there a web host that has it installed already? Door Host ( http://www.doorhost.net/ ) used to have it, but I don't think they do anymore. I'm considering going with Total Choice Hosting buying either their basic reseller plan or the regular Deluxe Plan.
Nonetheless, who has used this or other comparable CMSs and which do you prefer and why?

Oh, I just found this Drupal web hosting company called Site Ground that has all of the major CMSs installed already and gives you 24,000 MB of space. Anyone heard of them? I also found these guys: Canaca.com.

CMS for an Online Magazine

Anyone have recommendations for a CMS that'd be suitable for an online magazine? I need something that's easily skinnable (got everything done in static html, just need to translate that into a dynamic site); has a mailform, search engine, and content syndication; and has a content approval workflow and (ideally) some way of auditing who is making what changes.
Currently looking into Drupal, Mambo, TYPO3, and Xoops. Anyone have any experiences with these or any other CMS's?
