Burning DVD size files?
Date: 03/09/07
Keywords: no keywords
I have a hard drive fo about 120GB, and I've only got 670-odd MB left. I have quite a large number of video files, several of which are DVD-size files. Is there any way that I minimize the size of these files to burn them to disks?
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Graphics card woes
Date: 03/09/07
Keywords: no keywords
My graphics card recently died. It had been flickering more and more, and then it just wouldn't create a picture at all anymore. (I know it wasn't the monitor because I tried my monitor on my bf's comp, and it worked, and tried his monitor on my comp, and his didn't work).
So, I bought a new one, and the guy at circuit city told me to uninstall my old drivers first. well, I coulndn't do that without a gui, so I just popped the new card in anyway. Now, I still don't have a gui, because my screen is covered with wide, multicolored vertical bars the moment I turn it on. I can't interact with my comp at all.
It would be so easy to just uninstall the drivers, but I can't SEE them to GET to them! I tried booting in safe mode (f8), but it was the same thing. Is there anyway I can work around this?

Urgent for WordPress blog users
Date: 03/04/07
Keywords: php, security
WordPress 2.1.1 compromised, upgrade to 2.1.2 ASAP
If any of you administer a blog based on WordPress and you recently upgraded to version 2.1.1 then you should immediately upgrade to 2.1.2 before your site is 0wn3d. Earlier versions of the 2.x release series are safer, although 2.1.x has numerous bug fixes and minor security fixes.
(Links open in a new tab or window.)
"It was determined that a cracker had gained user-level access to one of the servers that powers wordpress.org, and had used that access to modify the download file. We have locked down that server for further forensics, but at this time it appears that the 2.1.1 download was the only thing touched by the attack. They modified two files in WP to include code that would allow for remote PHP execution."

YouTube ?
Date: 03/04/07
Keywords: web
Why wasn't I here ages ago? I'll start off with what I think would be an easy one however I have no idea why this happens. I cannot get a background on my YouTube account in the place for URL link I put the link from my WeBlog image account. It even shows the background as up on the preview but when I click ok it says enter valid URL and doesn't work on the page. No the world won't end if I go backgroundless it just aggravates me that it works on every page from here to MySpace. I'm sure I'll have plenty of better questions in the future but I just wondered what was happening there. Thanks in advance, Kelly.

Cannot install latest Yahoo! Messenger

Hello, I've been having constant problems using the latest Yahoo! Messenger. I'm using the one which can be downloaded at www.download.com but if I try doing it directly from Yahoo, I get this message:
What will I do with Error 26?
I'm using Mozilla Firefox. Internet is DSL. My firewall allows yahoo services. While using the version from download.com, I'm also having trouble connecting always saying to try again later. In the preference, I cannot change the 'Dial-Up' to 'DSL' because I'm not connected to it. Please help me.

Mysterious hard-disk double-murder
Date: 03/02/07
Keywords: no keywords
I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with a new-ish PC with a 2GHz processor and two 80+ gigabyte hard drives. The two hard drives appear to be dead. I switch them as master and slave, I plug in a working hard drive and try to find the other, to no avail. I thought the computer wasn't recognizing the drives but the Windows XP installation found at least one drive. At first it failed on trying to format the drive. On a second try (I think it was the second drive, too) it successfully formatted the drive (or it thought so, anyway) but halted and stated it was unable to create C:\Windows.
The motherboard recognizes and successfully operates the CD-R drive, the DVD-R drive, and freely boots an old (working) Windows 98 hard drive. When the working hard drive is installed, My Computer has no entry for the other hard drive.
What does this sound like? It seems weird that both drives would die at once when they're far newer and larger than the old drive I'm using in this computer. Are there any diagnostic recourses I have with these drives?
The bootup sequence also states "UltraBIOS is not installed because there are no drives installed." I have no idea what an UltraBIOS is or why it depends on a drive. It says this even when the working drive is installed.

USB 2.0 port on a dell computer
Date: 03/02/07
Keywords: web
Hello, i've checked that I have a USB 2.0 port on my dell cpu using device manager. However, whenever i connect anything to the available (& visible) USB ports, the locations of them are not the same as the usb 2.0 port. Forgive me if I'm being stupid, but how can I find the USB 2.0 port? Thnk you!
I have no idea what Dell model this is as they've taken it down from the website. I know on other models, one can lift off the front panel, but it's not possible with this one it seems.

Power supply / fan questions
Date: 02/27/07
Keywords: no keywords
I have a compaq presario desktop, about 3 years old. Recently, a fan began making noise and when you looked at it through the back, you could see the fan would rotate, hesitate, rotate, and so on. All the while, making a noise like you would imagine the motor in a house fan calling it quits.
A friend said to open the case and see if we could see anything (dust/fuzz/pet hair) jamming the fan. We've since realized that it is the fan inside the computer's power supply since it is all enclosed in a metal box within the case. I've not made any effort to open up that box, I was worried I'd kill the whole thing.
Now with this said, the computer operates fine. Of course I've stopped using it because of the fan issue until I knew what to do, but it still turns on and operates with no obvious problems.
Is it possible that the fan within the power supply could itself be going bad, or is this more likely that the whole power supply will have to be replaced? Either way, could someone shed some light on what may be going on and what this may run me to have repaired?
If this is going to be a costly repair that isnt worth doing, is it safe for me to turn the computer on and start getting all the files off of it I need to save? Will blowing a regular small fan onto the back of the computer (where the bad fan is located) tide me over to retrieve all of my data?

This is driving me nuts...

I have a laptop that's about 1 1/2 years old and for the whole time I've had it I've been using wireless internet on it. But today I got on it and the little symbol was crossed out. It says- WLAN: Disabled. So I thought all I'd have to do is enable it and tried but it won't even give me that choice, it won't let me do anything to fix it! I didn't do anything to make it happen in the first place. I shut it down thinking that might help but it didn't. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is it something wrong with my computer, or the internet connection? I just got a new wireless router and I've been having some problems with that but usually I can fix it and I'm not having problems connecting on a regular computer. I really want my internet back! So if someone can help me thanks a lot!

Weird error
Date: 02/26/07
Keywords: no keywords
Sometimes when viewing my journal, or specific entries, I keep getting this error:
The only way I can get out of it is to hit Ignore, often up to three times before it will go away. I have no idea what it means. It doesn't show up all the time and I can't figure out what I post to make it show up. I don't want it to appear, obviously. What does it mean and how do I get rid of it? For some weird reason it doesn't appear when I'm using the computer at my dad's house.

Windows Media problem
Date: 02/25/07
Keywords: no keywords
Earlier tonight, I downloaded Total Video Converter. It worked fine for the converting, but for some reason it made its player the default player for everything, which I didn't like, and so I deleted it. All well and good, except now any file types that had originally played in Windows Media Player via default don't play anymore. I get this message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.”
arg. Any suggestions on what I can do? ... any help would be appreciated. thanks. :)
