1. External Hard Drive

    Date: 01/27/09     Keywords: no keywords

I am having problems with my Western Digital Hard Drive.

The computer recognizes the drive and has assigned it a letter. I can see the drive in Windows Explorer and I can see all the files on the drive.

It will work for a few minutes, letting me open and play files (mostly mp4 and avi). But then when I try to add certain files to my iPod, the iPod starts to add the file, then stops. And after, i can't open any of the files. The same things happens after I start to play one file in RealPlayer and then try to play another.

I still see them in Windows Explorer, but the message I get from RealPlayer is that files can't be located. Shutting down and restarting the hard drive isn't working.

Last night I hooked the drive up to another computer in the the house and tried to move as many files as I could off of it. No problems except that certain files it said it couldn't move.

    Any suggestions or ideas?

  2. USB Port problems.

    Date: 01/25/09     Keywords: browser

Problem: My USB ports don't want to work anymore. I received an iPod Shuffle for Christmas and was able to download iTunes and set it up with no problems. It worked fine for about a week but then all my USB ports balked on me and I don't know what to do. My mother also received an iPod Shuffle, could attempting to accommodate both on one computer have screwed something up?

Operating System: Windows XP, Version 2002, Service Pack 3

    Browser: IE and Firefox

    Experience: Beginning to Intermediate

Problem started: About a month ago.

Steps Taken: Everything on this page and this page and this page. I also reloaded iTunes, restarted umpteen times and sacrificed to Baal. The iPods themselves work perfectly well.

Error Mssg: USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices on this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it.

  4. Network help

    Date: 01/23/09     Keywords: no keywords

We have a small home network which is a mixture of PCs and laptops and all the computers run XP Pro.

Three of the PCs are in effect 'new'. Two are out and out new and a third has been freshly installed. All updates are the most recent, i.e. SP3 and its various updates.

Our problem is that none of these PCs can see or connect to the network. They can all happily access the net (via a router) and the other computers can see and access these PCs, but they cannot even see themselves in Network Neighbourhood.

We've run the 'Set up small home network' wizard (several times); they all have the correct network name, but for some reason they simply can't access the network as such.

We're both fairly computer literate and are used to setting up and maintaining the network, these aren't the first new computers we've added and we've never had this problem before. And it isn't just us; our neighbour (who in fact supplied the two new computers) has had the same problem with another two news ones.

My theory is that it is something to do with XP SP3 - as it's the common factor between the two new machines and the one we reformatted. I think that somehow it's fine if your computer is already hooked up to the network and talking to it (all the existing computers are up to date as well with SP3), but if you download all the updates on to  a clean machine before the network has been set up something in SP3 is causing a problem. But I just do not know what.

Our network is very important to us, and whilst the new machines can be accessed via our other computers, that really isn't a solution to the problem. We've got to the stage where we are going to roll the non-brand new one back, take off SP3, get the network set up and then reinstall SP3. It's the only thing of which we can think.

However, before we do that (I really am loath to lose the various programs I've already installed on one of the machines) I thought I'd ask here is anyone else has come across this problem or if anyone has any suggestions as to what we might be missing/what we could do. If we'd never done it before, I could understand missing something, but it's something we've been doing for several years.

    Can anyone help, please?

    Thank you in advance.

NB. I am about to log off for the day so I won't be able to answer any possible additional question/suggestions until tomorrow.

  5. MB swap out questions

    Date: 01/15/09     Keywords: no keywords

My older desktop computer has issues. Used to not boot, until reset was pushed. I upgraded the memory and it won't boot to complete. It does like it did before, everything starts, nothing on monitor. video card replaced a few months ago, same issue after.

My question relates to swapping parts. i've built every desktop i've ever owned, but always started with a clean HD. How much trouble would it be to replace the MB and chip & video with a combo board WITHOUT wiping the HD? Can i get it to boot to pull stuff off the drive and then wipe it, or do i have to wipe it and start over from scratch?

So, I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop running Windows Vista. Lately it won't play certain sounds. It will play the Windows start up sound and ITunes, but Youtube and World of Warcraft get no sound at all. I've checked the system volume and the volumes for both Youtube and WoW. Does anyone have any ideas?

  7. kbdus issue

    Date: 01/13/09     Keywords: no keywords

Hey guys, I'm getting an error at start up and with my spybot scanner that says kbdus.dll is corrupt and unreadable. I've run the check disk utility about 40 times. I've looked it up several times, but I keep getting directed to "registry cleaners" that appear pretty bogus. Basically, if anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be grand. At this point, I'm starting to think I may have to reinstall XP, but the original disks are about 5 hours away from me.

II purchase my Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista five months ago and put my family's AOL account on it. I decided to get my own since their free for people with DSL/Cable internet.

I uninstalled the previous AOL and go to install the new one but it either cancels on its own or stops at 99.9% and shuts down. The AOL icon appears on the desktop but every time I click to open it I get an error saying the SNMaster is missing. How do I fix it so that I can get back into AOL? Is this an exclusive error for Windows Vista users?

  11. wireless router not so wireless

    Date: 03/27/08     Keywords: security

I have a basic dlink wireless router. connected to it wired I have a PC and a 360, wireless is another 360. I had the router configured originally when I had no PC. Now I just got one 2 weeks ago. My husband and I were not playing xbox at the same time until 2 days ago. now, wireless xbox, was lagging badly, kicked me offline. (btw, I never have my pc on when I game) Then I tried to get back online and was repeatedly testing the connection, sometimes showing a wireless connect w/ an IP or ICMP fail and mostly just showing no wireless connect. Then miraculously, it connects and I play just fine for about 2 hours. Next night, lag is worse, kicks me and I can't get back online. I called DLink, they said it was my xbox. Called XBOX, they said it was my router. My xbox did work when I moved it and had it wired to the modem. They had me change so many letters numbers and codes between the 2 tech support calls I just said screw it and put everything back to factory settings, Both XBOXs and reset the router. I have power cycled a hundred times, everything at once even. Now, the pc and wired xbox are fine. Wireless xbox still not recognizing any connection. But it shows my wireless network having a signal in the settings menu. I have also typed in my security key and everything. I had a friend tell me to pull my IP address from my PC and input to wireless xbox, still saying wireless network : not connected.

I have considered just buying a new router upgrading a bit and starting from scratch. Any router suggestions would be great. If you can just fix this that would be awesome too.

  14. Hi.

    Date: 03/23/08     Keywords: software

I'm a first-time  poster, but I have a terrible problem with my USB.

My USB is a Verbatim Store 'n' Go Mini 1GB, with most of the files password protected. I've used it for a few months now with minor glitches and it's worked fine. However, these last few days I keep receiving the message that it has to be formatted.

I wouldn't mind that so much...but I have lots of files on that I haven't been able to back-up. I've definitely learnt my lesson about that now...but is there any way I can back up the files before formatting it, despite the fact that it is probably corrupt? Or is there any way I can fix the USB without having to format it, as it says? These files are incredibly, incredibly important to me, right now.

I've downloaded numerous trials of programs that claim to backup files, as well as free software that claims to back USB files up...but none seem to work or do much at all.

I could do with any word of advice, thank you.

  15. can't upload anything anywhere

    Date: 03/21/08     Keywords: spyware

I am new, and am not geek smart. Sure I know somethings about the computer, but I do not have geek skills. (I mean that term in the nicest way possible!!!! computer techies are love, because they fix our problems ;)) Anyway, about my problem...I used to be able to upload anything anywhere, but I can't! I can't upload music, I also cannot attach picture files in email!!!! This is really driving me bonkers, and I don't know what's causing it. I had taken my laptop to our computer friend who fixed my desktop back in the day, and he just got rid of spyware, he didn't fix my problem!!!! I am not about to have my laptop taken away again. My laptop came with Windows Vista, and I do not have a copy and cannot re add it again. I also can't afford it at the moment. I have a HP Pavilion Laptop if that helps. I don't know the model number so don't ask. I hope one of you lovely techies can help my problem. Please and thank you. I await your suggestions.

  16. Help, please?

    Date: 03/21/08     Keywords: technology

Hello, computer_help. I'm new to this community, and I joined as soon as I found it because lately, I've been having quite a lot of computer problems. I also wish to help in any way I can, if other people are as frustrated about technology sometimes as I am.

In any case, here's my problem.

Some of the icons on my desktop, on the place of the name, have a different color background from the wallpaper I am currently using. Normally, the background of the name of the file would be the same color as the wallpaper, but it isn't happening now.

Some of the taskbars on a few of my programs have also gone awol. Whenever I click them, the background of the item I clicked goes white.

  18. S.M.P.O.S. (Save My Piece Of S---)

    Date: 03/17/08     Keywords: no keywords

I need help with my Sony VAIO PCV-RX560. How the heck can I get the side panels off this stupid crate? There's got to be a release *somewhere*! Reference pictures in photobucket.

Also, the DVD-ROM (topside) cannot eject with the press of a button. I can hear it trying, but it's probably jammed. I have it on the bottom now with the same results. Can it even read anything anymore?

The DVD+-RW also has its problems. It doesn't read anything I put into it. DVDs, CDs, burnt data discs, nothing. I check the property tags on it, and the computer thinks it is a CD-ROM, and it says that the device is working properly.

If I can't get everything up and running tip top, I'll just move the video card (upgraded awhile back to play a MMORPG), and maybe the DVD+-RW if it can be made operational into a less beat up computer.

If I can help it, I don't want to think about buying a new computer just yet. Screen caps are available if anyone thinks they can help.

  19. NVSCV32.EXE?

    Date: 03/16/08     Keywords: google

've discovered the process NVSCV32.EXE is always running when I start up my computer. A search on Google tells me this is a worm so naturally I'd like to get rid of it asap?

I ran a full system scan of HitManPro today, but after a reboot it's still there. I'm scanning with AVG right now, but I suspect it won't find anything either.

I'm running Windows XP, I mostly browse in Firefox (version 2.0.0.12), although I'll use IE 7 occasionally.

I'm not an expert on these things at all, so any help on how to get rid of this would be most appreciated.
