1. Problems with freezing?

    Date: 03/16/08     Keywords: virus

I got a new laptop on March 5th of this year. It's Window's Vista Ultimate, and a Eurocom. It's brand new, and for the most part runs beautifully. But shortly after I got it, I started having problems with it freezing up. It happens quite frequently (has already happened 5 times today) Usually when I've had computers freeze up on me, I'm at least able to move the mouse to hit restart. I'm not even able to do that. It won't even let me press ctrl-alt-del. At first I thought it was something to do with the display, but then it happened when I was listening to music, and the music screwed up and froze on the one note, so that led me to believe it wasn't a problem with the display. I ran adware and virus scans to make sure it wasn't that, and everything was ok. I have kept this computer very up to date in the short time that I've owned it.

I need help really badly. I'm going in for surgery in early April and need this computer running normally to keep up with my school work. Many thanks to anyone who can offer something.

  2. Internet connectivity problem

    Date: 03/12/08     Keywords: no keywords

In the building that I live, wi-fi is provided. At first it was a bit rocky getting it working as I needed a different wireless card than I have (something I found thru this site actually). Well since then I bought a whole new computer, a Sony Vaio, that already had the wireless built in that was WPA-2 compatible (it was one of the features I looked for when purchasing it).

Anyways, the internet worked lovely until about a week ago. Pages started becoming slow to load and then after a day of that I wasn't getting internet at all. I informed my landlord and on the day he went to check it out, it miraculously worked for that hour or so. Since then it hasn't.

Basically I can connect to the wireless network just fine, just cannot get beyond that. I get the 'limited or no connectivity' error. I once again informed him of it and he basically said that he was able to get on fine, there have been no other reports of issues connecting, and the internet company says they're broadcasting. I find it hard to believe that it's all my issue, because I can connect to other wireless networks just fine (including the one I'm currently on, but it comes and goes).

Soooo, any ideas of what I can do? If I had access to the modem, I would clearly cycle it through but I don't (and I'm betting my landlord wont at this point).

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium. And I can provide more details if anyone asks.

    Thanks in advance

  3. Embarrassing Youtube problem

    Date: 03/10/08     Keywords: java, web

Hi, I'm new here. I'm having an embarrassing little problem with Youtube that I can't figure out, but it's probably something simple. Every time I try to watch a video on the youtube website, I get this error message: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player." The only problem is, of course, that I have JavaScript enabled and the newest version of Adobe's Flash Player. I know this because I've gone so far as to uninstall them, reboot my computer, then reinstall them. But still, I get this message. Youtube's Help section is of no help, so I've come to you. Is there anything terribly obvious that I'm overlooking?

  4. Scrolling Problem

    Date: 03/07/08     Keywords: browser

I have a cat who likes to sit on keyboards when I'm away. Sometimes, she hits the right combination of keys and changes some of my browser preferences. I was able to figure out all but one of the changes she made today. When ever I use my up/down arrow keys for scrolling pages, a curser appears and it jumps from item to item on the page instead of evenly scrolling down.

Any ideas what I need to do to change it back?

  5. Wireless network woes II

    Date: 03/05/08     Keywords: software

Okay, so I've posted about this before, situation has changed slightly (according to my wife, anyway). Setup: my computer (no-name home-built) connected to a wireless router (Netgear WGR614v6) connected to a cable modem (Motorola Surfboard). Wife's computer is a Dell, four years old-ish now, using one of Netgear's wireless USB eggs. Problem: her computer now connects to the network (signal strength listed as excellent), but it doesn't see the Internet. I, obviously, do, since I'm posting this.

I know less than nothing about wireless networking, and am aggressive about it (I got out of hardware in the mid-nineties because I hated it), so when I plead with you to please use one-syllable words, I mean it. Anything more complex than changing a software setting I'll be calling in pros, so if it comes to that, just tell me to call the pros.

    Thanks in advance.

    "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR"

  8. Disk Drive

    Date: 02/27/08     Keywords: no keywords

My disk drive has been going a bit nutso lately. I'm on a Toshiba running on Windows XP and lately my disk drive hasn't been detecting when I put a CD, DVD, or any type of disc into it. Sometimes its lights will flash for a few seconds but then nothing happens, nothing pops up, no little disc symbol next to my mouse. When it does detect the disc (on rare occasions) it will run it for a few minutes then suddenly stop processing the information. Whenever I inspect the disk drive the little laser (sorry i don't know the technical terms) is pushed all the way down and stuck away from the center of the disk drive. Every time I move the laser back to it original position it just gets stuck in that little corner again. I think the disks are being picked up because the laser is being faulty...Can anybody help me?

  9. Animated Avatar Question

    Date: 02/27/08     Keywords: browser

    Hi all,

I love the animated avatars I see around, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get them to animate when I get permission to use them. My browser seems to just grab a frame of the animation, and that's it. It's driving me frackin' crackers. Help? Is there code in the properties that I can't seem to see?

    Feelin' like an eejyot,
    ~frabjous

ETA - I can save it as a .gif to my computer, but after that...?

  10. FileZilla sucks

    Date: 02/25/08     Keywords: no keywords

Been trying all night to get the updated version of http://grygon.critter.net/ up but it won't go. The new index page should just feature 4 buttons, a center image, and text above and below the center image.

This is the first time I've used FileZilla, what am I doing wrong? It seems like a pretty simple GUI but obviously not if I've waited 15ish minutes (I'm on dialup) for it to update only to find my OLD site still there.

    *grumble*

EDIT: I use Adobe Go-Live to manage my site and pages. I like it and have had NO problems using it to make sites. I've Exited it many times tonight and reopened my pages. They're still the newer versions. They're also newer versions in the Preview pages. So it isn't Adobe's mistake.

    What do you guys think?

  13. Trojan and anti-virus question

    Date: 02/13/08     Keywords: asp, virus

Ok last night my roommates computer got a bad backdoor virus which her anti-virus program let get pass. She saved some of her artwork (they were mostly jpg and png files) to an usb port but she’s afraid to put it back on for fear it has the Trojan on it. Can backdoor Trojans attach themselves to files, jps, and pngs? Also can trojans and spywear attach themselves to mp3’s?

We did get her computer rebooted but she lost everything, including her anti-virus program. Were wondering what’s a good anti-virus program to use? Please don’t mention McAfee, were have both had bad experiences with it so it is not an option. She read a few reviews that said kaspersky was good, anyone have any good experience with that?

Any input you can give us is much appreciated. Thanks!

  15. SHOUTcast problems

    Date: 02/09/08     Keywords: no keywords

I asked on their forums, but I'm not getting much help...

I've been using SHOUTcast for 3 years with no problems, but yesterday it suddenly stopped working. I have changed absolutely nothing in my network configuration, and I had just used it on Wednesday and everything was fine and dandy.

Ports 8000-8001 are forwarded, I have no firewall running, my IP is static... but I'm getting an error saying that I can't "be seen from the Internet" and thus my listener(s) can't connect to the station. Having it suddenly stop working when I've used it for so long with no problems makes no sense. :/

So anyone have any idea what's going on?

  17. Physical Memory Dump (blue screen error)

    Date: 02/07/08     Keywords: software, xml

Hey everyone. I posted a while ago here with my issue of my computer freezing COMPLETELY randomly. I did make sure my video drivers were up to date by getting the newest ones. However, it's still happening. I don't have the money yet to invest in hardware (such as a new power source) that might not fix the problem.

So I thought I'd post here again with the new issue that's cropped up and see if this sheds some light on the situation.

Once in a while, this is probably the third time, I'll come back to my computer after a while and it'll be at a blue screen that says Physical Memory Dump, and a bunch of information about 'if this is the first time this has happened ignore it' etc etc. I rebooted and Windows brought up a warning saying it was restarted incorrectly and ran its little checker and this is what it gave me:

    error signature
    BCCode : 10000050 BCP1 : DE24DEDC BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : 804E8D84
    BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 3_0 Product : 256_1

    and in that

    error report contents
    C:\DOCUME~1\Lavie\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERed59.dir00\Mini020608-01.dmp
    C:\DOCUME~1\Lavie\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERed59.dir00\sysdata.xml

Once again my computer stats are:

Windows XP Pro version 2002 Service pack 3, v3180
    Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz
2.41 GHz, 786 MB of RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 6600 256 MB
    Direct X 9.0

Is this a software issue? Should I just try wiping my whole drive and redoing Windows altogether? I REALLY don't wanna do that if it won't help, because I have SO much stuff I'd have to back up. Or is this a ram issue? Or power source?

Any and all help is REALLY appreciated, I'm really at a loss and really stressed out about this.

  18. Ethernet card help

    Date: 02/05/08     Keywords: no keywords

A friend of mine is in need of an ethernet card, but her computer is a hand-me-down and the former owner pretty much got rid of anything on the tower that identifies any of its inner components so she really has no way of knowing what type of motherboard or whatever she's got. If I have to go and find out myself I can, but would she be able to use something like this ethernet USB adaptor to have her computer hooked up to the dsl she's getting or would she need an ethernet card?

  19. Wireless Networking

    Date: 02/04/08     Keywords: browser, web

Question/Problem: When I hook up my wireless router, my PC no longer connects, but the Wii can, without a problem

Operating System and VERSION: PC: Windows XP SP2, and then whatevers on the Wii

Web Browser and VERSION: Firefox 2.0.0.11 for the PC, Opera for the Wii

Your level of experience: Seasoned with certain things, beginner with routers

Duration of problem: It's been happening for awhile. My ISP (Cox) says it's not them, but since I can connect with at least one internet-capable machine, I'm inclined to believe. It worked for awhile, but then stopped, and then would again, and then stopped again. We usually have to keep the router disconnected most of the time.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? I'm not sure of which I can take. I've tried it with the router on, but the Wii off, and still have nothing. It's already password-protected and all that good stuff.

I'm not sure if this info matters:
We're not sure if it's the computer (it's slowly dying a painful death). We're purchasing a laptop as soon as tax return comes in (should be by the end of the week), and we're hoping that both of us can get on the computers at the same time. We're purchasing a new tower in a few months (laptop is a priority, since I'm going to be going out of town, and still want to be in better contact than just phone with my husband).

I heard with Windows Vista you needed a driver, so i went through the steps on microsoft windows web site to upload a driver onto my computer, but it still isnt working.
