I have no idea what happened (it used to work fine before), but I have a motorola AOL instant messenger IMFREE device (a portable IM messenger) .. and even though the base is plugged in and i've already registered the base, the software need to communicate with the IMFREE does not want to seem to load.

I tried uninstalling it and then re-installing it, it doesn't work. In the ctrl+aol+delete dialog box after I run it, I see "MX240a_UPDATE" there, but no program loads. It then gives me a pop-up box that goes:

    "Run_Time error '53':

    file not found

everything is there .. the program is installed, the base is installed, the IMfree is fully charged ..

does anyone know what happened? without the software working correctly, I cannot use the IMfree.

  2. Windows Explorer

    Date: 02/03/06     Keywords: virus, spyware

I bought an Acer laptop in December last year and only three days ago I managed to connect to the internet. Shortly after running some windows updates my computer's battery died and hibernated while still connected to the internet. I didn't think anything of it at the time but after it had been on charge and not re-connected to the net I found that some of my picture folders weren't opening or showing up altered. I have a huge picture collection but only keep 100 pics in each folder. I went into one folder and the computer took its time like it was loading a huge file and then a pop-up came up saying "Windows Explorer has experienced and error and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience," I close out of that but often have to open the task manager to close it down and it says it isn't responding. This has also happened with another folder but I deleted that folder and other folders take forever to open whilst on any view (normally thumbnail) and the icons on thumbnail view are tiny.
My main questions I guess are... Do I need to delete these folders and the pictures in them to stop this? Is there any way to fix this problem?

    Thank in advance.

P.S I have run total virus scans and spyware scans with nothing reported.

So I need to get a new computer, and I really couldn't put one together myself. So I want to buy one from a company. BUT it seems like every one of them dumps they're waste in other countries, and in the poorer sections at that. Go go third world exploitation. So does anyone know of where i could get a computer from that doesn't ship its waste over seas or at least does it in an enviromentally safe way?

  5. deleting temporary files

    Date: 01/30/06     Keywords: no keywords

hi i'm just wondering--in Internet Explorer you delete your Temporary Internet Files. is it really necessary/important to do this? i've been wondering if the computer just does it automatically when you shut down or that if the Temporary Internet File folder gets full, it just deletes the other files--your computer/internet transferring wouldn't slow down.

because i'm also thinking of doing this with Mozilla Firefox now.

  7. Tricky question

    Date: 01/29/06     Keywords: browser, web

I tried like heck to solve this one, so maybe you all can help.

I'm trying to download a video stream from a website. I saved the entire webpage the video opened on, but the video was an asx, meaning it's a playlist that targets another video.

Opening the asx in a text editor gets me an mms link that leads to the WMV file, but I have no idea how to download it. When I open it in a browser, it acts like the asx file; it opens Windows Media Player and opens the movie but I have no way to actually save it.

I'm trying to download the actual WMV file to my hard drive, so I could edit the video on my computer, upload it to an FTP server, etc. Using Windows XP. More system specs if you need them.

    Please help!

  8. Help needed with Internet registration pages

Date: 01/29/06     Keywords: virus, web, yahoo

Hello, everyone. I've come to this communtity a few times before, and it's usually been helpful, so here I am.

My family owns a Dell Dimension 8400 PC w/ Windows XP. Although my family has had a bad history with virus trouble, the Internet has been working pretty well since we got it. Recently, however, there has been a bit of an issue when it comes to singing up for things via Internet. An example: I try to sign into my email account at Yahoo, and it comes up with a "The page cannot be displayed" screen. My sister tried to download a job application: same screen. My mom tried to order a bunch of stuff from a website: same screen. I tried to register for the ACT: same screen. Anytime anyone tries to register or sign up for something; when you click the actual button, that screen comes up.

This is a huge problem, considering the amount of items my family orders online. Since I'm also going to be applying for colleges soon, I need a reliable Internet that I'm sure will get my information through. It's very nerveracking. I don't know what to do. So if anyone has any idea what this is all about and how to fix it, I would be very thankful.

  9. Pesky icons?

    Date: 01/28/06     Keywords: virus

Hey, silly question... my desktop is getting full, but I’m not sure if I can delete anything. There are the downloaded programs such as ad aware, spybot, viruscan, and firefox, but each one also has an installation icon accompanying it (including Ethernet card setup and something called LiDE). When I try to move those unwanted icons it just makes a copy and leaves it on the desktop, and when I try to recycle them it says, "This is a program. If you remove it, you will no longer be able to run this program or edit some documents." Does this mean it’ll delete the entire program or just the unneeded installation?

  11. Audio Program Suggestions.

    Date: 01/28/06     Keywords: no keywords

My father wants to convert a bunch of cassette tape music and he wants to burn it on a cd. I told him that it was possible to do with the pc and a music (mp3) program. He asked me which one was the best to do something like that and I told him that I could find out. Anyone have any suggestions on which is the best mp3 program youve come across so far? Price doesnt matter, I just want a program that is quite good for making the transition from cassette tape music to cd quality stuff. I have the other impliments so I just need the program. I would like the program to have the options to enhance the music and to be able to manually determine when a song begins and ends. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice on the matter.

  15. Please Please Please

    Date: 01/24/06     Keywords: microsoft

I was suppose to turn in a major book report today to my english teacher. I typed the report on microsoft word 2000 on this ancient computer at my grandmothers. We don't have a printer here so I saved it to a disk and took it to school with me to print it out. Well after about an hour and a half of the program refusing to open and the disk drive giving a very annoying "bonk"ing noise every other second I finally figured that maybe the fact that we had word 2003 instead of 2000 on our school computer's was the problem. So I got on an older computer at the school and was able to get the program open but it went from around 6 pages to about 23 and it was filled with odd letters and little boxes. Well I didn't save it but when I got home and tried to open it on the same computer it still had all the boxes on it. I didn't save it anywhere else but the disk and I need to know if there's any way I could get rid of the boxes and get my words back. I would be very thankful, this is a very important report.

I got as far as the black screen that says "Windows XP" with the little green bar running underneath.... and it just keeps running. I tried restarting in safe mode, it kept getting hung at system32/drivers/mup.sys

I formatted the C drive again, and the same thing happens. I don't know what to do. Please help. :(

  18. An update

    Date: 01/22/06     Keywords: no keywords

So that thing I posted about last night with teh PS2 and USB ports not working? Now we have this lovely happening. I got ahold of a PS2 mouse (only had a keyboard previously), and when I booted up with that, everything worked (the 2 USB mice, the USB keyboard, and the PS2 keyboard). I installed the remaining drivers for the mouse I was planning on usng, the keyboard, and the video card. This morning when I started it without the PS2 mouse, the USB slots still worked, but the PS2 keyboard didn't. Which I guess isn't bad, since I am using a USB in the end anyway, but does anyone know why it would do this? And if the problem could full-scale revert back to no USB devices working?

  19. Stuck in hibernatio mode! Help requested!

    Date: 01/22/06     Keywords: virus

My boyfriend has a WinBook, V Series, purchased in 2004, running Windows XP, model number green733E.

He closed the lid to put the comptuer in 'hibernate' mode and now he CAN'T GET IT OUT of hibernate mode. :( No matter what button he pushes (ctrl+alt+delete... holding down the power button... moving the mouse around) it will not resume normal operating mode.

Trying to provide extra information... he has updated Norton anti-virus... the amount of memory is "a lot" (okay, not helpful)... no new programs installed that I know of.

    A few other clarifying statements...

    - The Winbook is fully charged. It has been plugged in all night.
    - The only thing you can see on the screen is a black screen with a white blinky cursor up in the corner.
    - I caught my (average-sized) cat sitting on it (while it was closed)... is it possible that this could affect anything??

Stuck in hibernation!! Any help you can give will be greatly apprciated! Thanks! :)

  20. Back again with a new problem

    Date: 01/22/06     Keywords: microsoft

Hey again everyone. I asked a few weeks ago about an issue I was having building a new computer. Turns out it was a motherboard issue like some of you suggested, so I have a nice new one installed.

Unfortunately there is a new problem. I bought a Gigabyte K8 Triton nForce 4 Motherboard, and I was installing Windows and such last night. After a bit of difficulty (since it was screwing itself by trying to use RAID even though I just have one SATA drive in there), it finally worked. I did all the Windows updates, installed Norton, Microsoft Office, etc. Wel, towards the end of all of that, the keyboard stopped working (PS2). I didn't have a USB one where I was, so my friend and I thought it might have a setting in the BIOS taht he might have flipped while trying something. thought nothing of it and took it home, confident that the USB keyboard I planned on using would work fine.

Wrong. Neither USB or PS2 keyboards are working, nor are any USB mice. This is including ports on the case, the on-board ones, and the motherboard expansion USB slots as well. They work in BIOS, just fine. The only settings I can find in BIOS that are related to this are "USB Keyboards" and USB Mice" which I made sure were both enabled. I even tried disabling them and going back tot eh PS2 one, nothing.

Any idea why this would happen suddenly, and what I can do to fix it? Thank you so much in advance!
