  2. RAM to MP3

    Date: 10/25/05     Keywords: web

    A quick question.

I pulled a whole "Save Target As" business with a Real Player Presentation on a website. I have a program that I'm attempting to use to convert the .ram file into an mp3 - however the program isn't recognizing the .ram file due to the fact, I think, that its saved as a link rather than a file.

I tried downloading it through Get Right but it didn't help. Each time I try to convert the file I get a "file error" message.

Just curious if anyone had any tips on how to rip the file from the website and onto my computer in order to convert it to an mp3 using my other program.

I have the link available if you need to see it.

    Thanks very much in advance.

  3. sharing an internet connection

    Date: 10/24/05     Keywords: web

I need help trying to network or share broadband internet between 3 devices.

I have 2 PCs (WIN XP Pro) and an Xbox which I want to get online. I want to be able to run at least two of the devices at the same time, sharing a Verizon DSL connection. I suppose my first question is, "Can I even do this?"

I bought a DLink 604 Router from Office Max and have downloaded the latest firmware. When the computer in the living room is on the Internet in my room, either the PC or the Xbox, runs extremely slow. I get so much lag in the XBox Live games that I'm kicked off the match and the Internet on the PC is so bad that the websites take literally minutes to load up. I get a lot of "website so-and-so has time out messages". When I check my IP address on the PC in my room via ipconfig in the cmd prompt it gives me the default 192.168.0.1 jazz.

I am absolutely retarded when it comes to networking devices, but I have friends who run multiple computers off a DSL connection and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Do I need to assign IP addresses? What? Any tips or tricks or anything that will lead me to get a solid Internet connection would be greatly appreciated. I really need a solution because it's getting annoying when my family is playing on SLingo.com int eh other room and I can't even check my e-mail in mine.

  4. CD drive not working

    Date: 10/23/05     Keywords: no keywords

I asked around on '[info]'computerhelp a few days ago with no help, and I called Compaq and they were no help either.

I bought a Compaq SR1500NX in August. It's really crappy and slow and I hate it. But it had a DVD-R/CD-RW drive, and it was cheap.

The CD drive worked fine up until about two weeks ago. Then it just sat there and did nothing. I tried playing CDs and DVDs and it wouldn't do anything. I tried burning CDs through different programs, and they all said "Please insert a disc" even though there was a disc in there. Whenever I put one in, I get the little cursor with the pointy arrow and a disc, so I know the computer knows a CD is in there. It just doesn't know what to do with it.

The Compaq guy ran me through System Restore and it worked. I could play a DVD. So my sister (who is the beginning of all my problems) got online while I took a shower, and now the drive doesn't work. I ran System Restore again, and it doesn't work now.

What can I do? I really need to burn some CDs right now.

  5. Administrator Account

    Date: 10/22/05     Keywords: virus, antivirus

I have a big problem, or rather my brother does. Somehow the administrator account on his laptop got deleted so he can't install this game that he wants to install or run his antivirus program. The only account he has left is still under the administrator's *name* but it's a Limited account now. As far as I know the only messing around with the accounts that he did was changing the password. Anyone know if you can even *delete* an admin account? And everyone knows that you can't make an admin account with a limited account. How would I go about getting an admin account back?

I'm using XP Professional, if that has anything to do with anything.

  6. help needed

    Date: 10/22/05     Keywords: no keywords

If anyone has experience with P2P I need some help.

I think I'm having major internet problems. I use a Voyager 105 ADSL model with a 2.2 Mb/s connection. Fast, no? No, not really.

So, I incorrectly configured a certain P2P program so it was showing Kb/s instead of KB/s. I thought I was getting 13 KB/s (which is slower than anticipated, but still fast) when in fact, I am averaging 2 KB/s. And I'm paying £35 a month for this super-fast connection but what am I getting?

So, fair enough, I'm going slow on P2P. Let's put it down to a port configuration error or the ever-so-frequent firewall blocking error. But here's the kicker. If I ever run the P2P program, IE slows down drastically. (Don't tell me to swich to firebird. Not only do I not want to hear it, but I have installed it, thank you very much and it goes just as slow or slower with SHITTY annoying image placeholders).

So now perhaps I'm thinking the modem isn't configured properly or maybe the driver's rubbish altogether. Over on P2P's site, okay, I'll tell you, it's Shareaza, I've installed the Service Pack 2 patch, I re-configured all the port settings, I've even gone so far as turning off the Firewall. Nothing is helping me!!!

Why am I going slow? Can anyone IM me? I'll be online tomorrow night from 5pm onwards, London time :/

I'd owe you more than debt of gratitude :)

  7. Computer Woes Go On...

    Date: 10/20/05     Keywords: microsoft

Hello, you may remember me last week asking about my computer. Well, I took it back to the shop when it stopped working all together and they install a new CPU chip for me because the other one had burnt out.

Unfortunately I'm still having problems, The Sims 2 still isn't working, it either gives me the warning 'This program has crashed' or the computer restarts and I get a Windows message about how I have a serious problem. As far as I can tell the problem has to do with a driver, but it won't say which one, I opened Device Manager and updated all the drivers that I could, but it still won't work.

Also, more worryingly, my USB ports are no longer working. They were before, but now the computer won't pick them up, so I can't use my optical mouse or my memory sticks. I've tried to update the BIOS and various other things suggested by Computer Help Boards on the net, but nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have an idea what might be the problem? I don't whether to take the computer back to the shop because they really seem to have crapped it up, I've also injured my ankle and can't get down there myself. Do you think though I should take it back, complain and threaten to call the Department of Fair Trading? Especially since the computer was working fine before I took it there.

Any help is appreciated, thanks :O)

  8. Please help!

    Date: 10/20/05     Keywords: virus, google

Ok...so here's my problem (and I tried searching google about it but wasn't able to find anything). When I first turn on my computer I can connect to the internet fine. (i use dial-up) But if my computer has been on awhile or if I have already disconnected from an earlier time I just can't connect. It will say dialing and everything and then at the very end where it would be connected a thing pops up that says "This action is not supported." (something like that...tell me if I need to check exactly what it says...i just can't right this second because I'd have to restart.)
Anyways if I restart my computer again I can connect again.

I'm pretty sure that I do have a virus or something on my computer. I do have numerous virus scans, etc. but none of them are picking up anything.

If you can help me in any way or give any ideas of what you think this may be it would be appreciated so much!

    Thank you. =/

    hi everyone.

right, my USB port/removable disk drive has kind of just stopped working.

it worked alright until one day, my friend needed to upload some pictures from her camera to my computer so she could print them.
she had to install the disk for her camera (a kodak one, can't remember which one exactly).
since then, every time i've plugged in my camera (olympus) or mp3 player (philips) i can't transfer pictures/songs to/from my computer. i've tried to reinstall the disk i got with my mp3 player.
the unplug icon comes up in the taskbar, but it says "stop usb disk - drive (:)" when i think its supposed to say "stop usb disk - drive (f:)"
i'm at my wits end and don't know what else to try.
any help will be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

  10. Help!

    Date: 10/19/05     Keywords: linux

Okay. I've tried everything, but I just CAN'T seem to get the damn thing working, so I came here to plead for help.

I was recently given a laptop that refused to boot the version of Windows it was currently running: when it got past the loading bar screen, there'd be nothing but a black screen. As a lot of people here are programmers, or were, we tried to re-install it. Loading the drivers: nope. Formatting the entire hard drive and reinstalling the OS from CD: nope. Creating six Windows boot disks and trying to use them: nope. (This error continually occurs on Boot Disk #3: it keeps telling me 'File hal.dll could not be loaded. Press any key to exit Seup": and I've tried loading the file by hand.) Finally, someone told me to download and burn a Knoppix CD and use that -- great idea, I've always wanted to run Linux on a personal computer of mine. However, NONE of my downloads want to run... I have CoreFTP Lite, the same FTP utility I've always used, but I get nothing. Maybe I'm overtired and maybe the medication I'm on is fucking with my head... but HOW do I get a bootable CD from the list of files in the Knoppix Parent Directory, which is ALL I seem to keep getting?

Can ANYONE help me here? With either option? I'm going freaking insane, and I'd be eternally grateful. We NEED this computer, yesterday.

    TIA

  11. Video Problem

    Date: 10/18/05     Keywords: no keywords

OK. This is going to be hard to explain since I'm terrible when it comes to computer technicalities, but I'll try my best.

I have this movie on my computer, Requiem for a Dream, to be exact. So I decide to play it on RealPlayer and something wierd happens. The audio is completely fine, but the picture is messed up in a way like it's in a wierd color and the screen is divided as if the same thing is being repeated.

I've tried it also in Windows Media Player and RealOne Player.

I have all the available video codecs. It's a divx2 AVI Video type of movie. Please help me.

Okay, I've just become annoyed enough with this problem to ask about it.

WinXP, 3200 AMD processor, 512 MB RAM, Compaq Presario.

Lately my PC has been making the error sound at random intervals.  You know, the sound when, for example, you get an error window you have to close to continue but you try to click outside of it.  Except, I'm not doing anything unusual.  As in, the sound does not relate to anything I am DOING.  I've heard the machine make it even when I'm NOT using it.

    Any ideas?

  13. IE/Netscape + Desktop Icons

    Date: 10/17/05     Keywords: browser

I just downloaded the new Netscape onto my laptop because I have a site that I want to stay logged into on three (I have IE and Firefox already) accounts, and I just open whichever browser to do what I need to do on whichever account. But, the new Netscape is logging me into the account that I'm logged into on IE. I can't get it to stay logged into my other account. Do they share cookies or something? Is there some way to fix this so I can stay logged into both accounts?

Also, my friend just got her computer worked on, and she said that when she got it back, all of her desktop icons (or all of her icons for that matter) were highlighted and underlined and she couldn't get it to go away. Anyone know how to fix this? =/

    Thanks in advance! =)

  14. Limewire

    Date: 10/17/05     Keywords: virus

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Limewire is an okay program for music? I heard that the mp3 files on Limewire usually don't have viruses or anything else that's bad. Only programs and video files (and .wav, .avi, .mov???) have. Is that true? What other bad/good things are there for Limewire?

  15. How many reformats to complete erase data beyond any chance of recovery?

    Date: 10/16/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm selling a laptop I bought in 2004 that has a lot of my financial information on it - bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etc. How many times do I need to wipe the hard drive to wipe this data completely beyond any shred of possibility of being recovered by the new buyer? I realize there's generally a slim chance I'd sell it to someone who'd use it for identity theft, but I don't want to take any chances. I've been told that reformatting the hard drive once is not sufficient, but I don't know where that leaves me -- three times, six times, ten times, etc?

  17. Perhaps a very stupid question..

    Date: 10/15/05     Keywords: no keywords

When my computer boots up I've got a little 'Magic Health' section of the pre-windows screens that lists various measurements for my computer. (Like CPU temp, fan speed, etc) One of the voltage readings is VDD and it jumps between a 'red' (which means low/bad) reading of 1.36 (ish) to one over 1.5 but nothing higher than 1.6. Is there an average VDD number and if so, what can be done to bolster mine?

    Thanks!

  18. .flac file help

    Date: 10/15/05     Keywords: google

    Hi everyone,
I just downloaded a bootleg off of BitTorrent, and all of the files have the .flac extension. I have tried to make them play, but to no avail. I Googled this and found that there are several programs that you can somehow "use" on these files, but I don't understand how to use them and what they do, etc. I just want to convert these files so they'll play on my iTunes - is that so wrong? (I have Windows XP, if that matters.)
    Thanks so much.

I hope someone can help me with this problem.

I can't seem to copy and paste in Firefox anymore. I'm not sure what exactly started this. I can copy from a textbox into the same text box, but I can't copy from the address bar into a textbox, or from any other browser windows. My windows is up to date, and Firefox is as well. I'm not sure what exactly the problem is, much less how to fix it.
