Are there any free messageboard/bbs/forum services that people really like and know that work well? I'd like to use one for a school project. It would be nice if it didn't display advertisements.

(or could direct me to a nice community where I could ask this question)

  2. Wiping the hard drive

    Date: 10/11/05     Keywords: no keywords

Hey everyone! I was just wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a program to completely wipe the hard drive clear since we are getting a new computer soon. My dad has used it for his business at home, so I am looking for something that is a good quality program. Thanks!

  3. Same program, two faulty disks?

    Date: 10/11/05     Keywords: no keywords

I decided to mess with one of my photo editing programs called PhotoImpression 5 and everytime that I clicked on the option to place text on my image, the program stalled then gave me an error message about a problem occuring and having to shutdown. So I decided to uninstall the program and then used the original disc to reinstall it. I do the whole process again with the program and again I run into the same problem. I uninstall it once more and I install the program again using a different disk of the same program and the same problem occured. What I want to know is what can be causing this problem? I used the same discs, on different occasions to install the program in the past and nothing like this ever happened then. Is it the fonts that are screwing it up? My pc? The program itself? My other image programs (psp9 and cs2) dont do this when I use the fonts to place text on my images so Im really confused about what the hells goin on. If any one has any solutions or suggestions to fix this problem on my own or with help, please feel free to throw em my way. Thanks a lot for the help in advance, I really appreciate the effort.

  4. Hewlett Packard Deskjet 5150 question

    Date: 10/10/05     Keywords: software

Hi, my name is Heather, and IT services at this university are now sufficiently convinced I'm an idiot for not being aware of A4 sized printing paper, and so I am holding off turning to them for the moment, so here goes:

I have a Hewlett Packard 5150. It is quite beaten up, since it is from 2003 and on top of that has been roughly shipped across the Atlantic with no "Fragile" mark on it or sufficient packing, no doubt.

Enough personal stuff, though, my question is this. I have adjusted the settings and things for the aforementioned A4 paper, and the readings for ink say they're fine, and I am convinced the program is fine since it was not the software that was shipped across the Atlantic, but I continually receive this message when attempting to print:

    "L5C
    Paper Jam
Remove small media rear feeder and two sided printing module from the rear of the device and clear the jam..."

And then it goes on to say not to attempt to pull the jammed paper out through the front. Which is a dumb disclaimer considering it cannot even pull the paper into the gears to jam it.

    What should I do?

    Thank you.

  5. Can't access MSN or Hotmail

    Date: 10/10/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi everyone!

I'm having a problem with Hotmail and MSN. When trying to go to Hotmail, I get a "Page cannot be displayed", and with MSN it just won't sign in.
At first I thought it was just the computer being finicky so I restarted. There was no change, so I reset the modem. Still no change. I then deleted temp files and hostory, and disabled my firewall. Still no change, so I made sure no one had changed settings on the router, and they hadn't...so I'm at a loss for what to do.
    Help?

I'm on WindowsXP if it helps.
    Thanks!

  6. Sudden Graphics Card Problem

    Date: 10/10/05     Keywords: no keywords

I recently brought new RAM, and all these problems have being happening with the graphics when I try to play The Sims 2, but I don't understand what connection they could possibly have. Did the computer place blotch something? I ran dxdiag and all the tests worked, but the game graphics are completely stuffed up and this morning it wouldn't even start!

I installed a new driver, so I thought that was the problem so I unistalled it, but the problems are still going on.

I have a GeForce 3 Ti 200, which isn't the best card in the world, but it's not the worst and is above the Minimium Requirements.

So, does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

  7. Routers.

    Date: 10/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

I just have a question about routers, and I thought you guys might be able to clear it up for me. ^^

I only have a laptop, and I've just now advanced from dial-up 'net to cable. So, if I were to buy a router, would I be able to take my laptop around the house and connect to the 'net, or do I have to hook the router up to a PC? =/

My friend and I have debated on this, and I just don't understand why it would have to hook up to a PC first, considering that if the PC is off the router still works (for her).

It'd really help if I could get some insight on this before I go out and buy a router to test it myself. ^_^ Thanks!

  8. Help, please!

    Date: 10/09/05     Keywords: virus, web

    Problem:
No picutres are showing up on any websites. I'll get the occasional few here and there but that's it. I don't get the little hotmail icon things; I don't see icons on any of my friends page (DJ or LJ); I don't even see pictures on myspace anymore. And there are so many more sites that I'm not seeing picutres on, those are just the ones I use most frequently.

I've got an Dell Windows XP and McAfee Virus Protection. I'm currently scanning my computer for viruses but I really doubt that I have any viruses. I'm not dumb, I know quite a bit of stuff about computers. But this seriously has me stumped. I mean a month or two ago it just started out where I think there something wrong with my internet connection. Now there's no place holder for the pictures or anything. I know that there are supposed to be pictures. Just argh.

  11. New Video Card?

    Date: 10/08/05     Keywords: google

I have a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Video card in my PC. 3200+ AMD Athlon processor, 512 MB SDRAM, 200GB HD.

When I got the card, I told the person at Best Buy that I was looking for an affordable card that I could play Starcraft on. The card handles that OK. But I've started having problems besides that. I found another game I wanted to play, Star Trek Elite Force 2, and was unable to play for more than a few minutes without either a total system freeze or a crash.

And just now, I had a total system crash while using the program Google Earth. Windows XP pointed the finger of blame at the NVIDIA card.

Between wanting these issues to stop and realizing I may actually be into more advanced games than I was before, should I just give in and get a new and better card? I'm pretty sure I have the budget for it but don't want to do it if it's not necessary.

And if I do, should I avoid NVIDIA? In my research on the Elite Force problem, I found one or two that basically said that NVIDIA and Elite Force 2 just don't get along well.

Thanks for all your help! Cross posted about.

  12. My CD Drive won't eject or read the CD in the drive

    Date: 10/08/05     Keywords: no keywords

I've recently installed DSL on my computer. This may or may not have anything to do with my problem but I never had a problem prior to this time. Right now I have a blank CD in my CD drive that I intended to copy music to. I have Windows Media Player open, however the CD is not being recognized nor will my eject button work. So I can't copy to the CD nor can I get the CD out. I cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on. Any suggestions?

  13. html / java help

    Date: 10/07/05     Keywords: html, java

I have been working with this all day and cant find anything. Basically i have a code I figure it is java and for the submit button at the end(what appears) you basically only have two options: a picture link or a button. Here is one example: input type="image"src this brings up a picture link.

I only want a simple blue html link that a person clicks on to submit, I think it has to be in the input type format, so how do i do this?

is there anyway to put a a href in there to make it a submit form, or any other code to do this?

    Any help greatly appreciated

  14. Java help

Date: 10/07/05     Keywords: browser, html, java, shopping

I've been having trouble with Java. For example, if I'm doing online shopping, they often have the option of viewing a larger image of the item, which comes up in a popup window or something. A lot of the time, no window or image appears at all. Most recently, I clicked on a button with the following link: javascript:centerIt(345,164,'popvideo.html?artist=beautiful','drvideo'); and again, it didn't work. :\ I'm pretty sure the problem is on my end because the sites work on other people's computers. I also tried turning off the popup blocker (whether or not that's even related to this problem), but still nothing. What's going on??

I'm using Windows XP home edition and my browser is Firefox 1.0.7. (Though it doesn't work with my IE either.)

    Thanks

  16. Wireless network problem

    Date: 10/07/05     Keywords: web, ebay

I'm having a bit of difficulty with the wireless network I set up recently. I bought a new Netgear router on eBay last week and was able to set it up to my iMac and cable modem successfully -- until today, my laptop was picking up the signal and I was able to connect to the wireless network. However, I had reason to disconnect the router today, just for a couple of hours, and when I hooked everything up again, it wouldn't work. I have been trying to fix it for a couple of hours. The laptop is picking up the signal, and says it is connected, but it won't let me view any webpages or connect to MSN, etc. An MSN error message mentioned something about DNS servers (?) perhaps not being defined. I can't surf the internet on my iMac while the router is connected, either. I can only use the 'net if I disconnect the router and connect the modem directly to the computer.

Also, the router was visibly brand new in the box, unused, however there were no instructions. When I set it up at first, I just plugged it in and I was automatically taken to the Netgear webpage where it set everything up for me. I don't know how to get back to this page, though, if that's what I need to do. I'm getting very frustrated! Any help would be much appreciated.

  19. Keyboard Problem

    Date: 10/06/05     Keywords: virus

My keyboard is not allowing me to type normally. It is a Memorex MX 2500. I'm not sure if it could be a virus or maybe just simply a hardware problem.

Different letter keys are doing odd things. Everytime I type s it returns. I'm copy pasting it right now. w is also doing something odd. It is going "home" to the place I first started typing and adding a 9. Numbers are being odd also. The x key also forces return. Enter types an s of its own accord.

  20. A bit of an easy question...

    Date: 10/05/05     Keywords: no keywords

Well... I'm buying a laptop off of my mother... She has AOL installed and I know one of the only ways to get it off the computer is to format and start anew... I personally like the option anyhow... The original owner registered under the name 'CubanAssassin.' Rather annoying in it's own right. My question being... Would a copy of Windows (XP Pro) be able to be installed onto the original machine without the original user's name, and info? I'm afraid I haven't done anything as such before... And I would rather just wipe the slate clean so there's only my things on there... Ya know? Or if somoene knows how to 1)Remove AOL completely... 2)Change the name of the registered user... Etc? I know the guy has some 'extra' crap in there... So... Yea...
