I bought a simple tv tuner to hook up to the computer so that i can watch tv as well on the monitor and switch between pc / tv. I tried setting it up but the monitor doesnt display anything when its in PC mode. I dont have a cable wire yet attached to the tuner. Do I need to have the cable wire attached and plugged into the cable port for the monitor to work in either mode?

SP2 Makes my computer slow, REALLY slow
Date: 03/13/05
Keywords: virus, spyware
Its a Novatech 1.4GHz (or something around that) and before i installed a bunch of updates, it was crashing ALL the time. It was crashing like once every 15 minutes, and you had to do a hard boot, because everything completely locked up.
A month or so ago i installed a bunch of updates, and it sudenly was working fine!
Then a few days back i installed SP2 and it allllll went really really really slow. It takes forever to boot, to load programs, to do anything.
It has no viruses that Avast can find, it has no spyware that Spybot can find, and im not really sure if there is a solution.
Thanks for any help, -Mark

Global IME (Japanese)
Date: 03/13/05
Keywords: web, microsoft
Hi, all I want to do is just be able to type/print e-mails, word documents, etc. in Japanese.
I went to download Office XP Tool: Global IME (Japanese) but it says I don't have Office XP.
However, I was able to download Office XP Tool: Japanese Language Pack (even though I don't have Office XP? Or Office 2000?). With this program, I can now see Japanese characters on internet websites but I can't type any Japanese.
I also tried to download Microsoft Global IME (Input Method Editor) 5.02 because it said it was for people who didn't have Office XP. BUT it said the program wasn't for my version of Windows.
I have Windows XP. It was installed by some stranger who is now gone. So, I can't get him to give me the CD where I can download the Japanese language pack with IME. That would have been the easiest solution...
Any help?

Nkay, I have a very vague problem.
I'm a big fan of "file-sharing" programs, such as soulseek and bearshare and whatnot.
Recently, my computer has caught a bug that seems to only be effecting these types of programs.
I can open and run anything else just fine, but when I try to open soulseek...nothing.
It's not just soulseek though.
I've tried downloading and installing all of them and still - NOTHIN!!!
Please help, I need to steal, er...share music.

Hard Drive Problems

I'm glad I found this community. Thanks in advance for your time.
Alright, I own an external hard drive. [Buslink USB2.0 Hard Drive.] The problem is that I can't delete anything off this hard drive.
The error message is such:
Cannot delete [files]: Cannot find the specified path.
Make sure you specify the correct path.
I have Windows XP Home Edition, and for the life of me, cannot find out how to specify the correct path. then again, I am just futzing around with the computer and hoping something's going to work out.
Again, thanks in advance for your time and any answers you have for me.

File search utility question
Date: 03/11/05
Keywords: no keywords
I work in a school served by an XP/2003 network, and we find that the kids keep bringing in files on their USB pen drives-hence this question:
Does anyone know of a program/a way that we can use to scan across the network workspaces, to locate things such as .exe, .com, wma's etc and review/delete them? Free would be preferable.
thankyou for the help!

Hot Laptops and Shifty Addresses... sounds naughtier than it is
Date: 03/10/05
Keywords: no keywords
Hi!
I just recently bought a notebook computer, and have found myself with a couple questions.
First, is it normal for the underside of a notebook computer to become very warm? Not flesh-searing or anything, just very warm. The fan system seems to be working, and I chose the "optimum setting no matter how noisy" for cooling, so maybe I'm just paranoid.
Also, in connecting to the internet wirelessly with a Broadband router, I find that every so often the laptop disconnects from the internet and says it's "Acquiring new IP address" or something along those lines. This is, of course, not the end of the world, but it is rather annoying. Is there any way I can tell it to stop doing that?
Thanks in advance for your time!

The only other account I have is a guest one which is what I'm using now. how do i find my password? or change my password or something?
I really need my computer files for school and the only thing I seemed to find on the subject was reinstalling windows but then I will have lost all the files that I need. and ohh. oh I just want to cry.
there has to be something I can do because I can't be the first person who has done this :(

Comcast? Internet Explorer? Microsoft?
Date: 03/06/05
Keywords: virus, web, spyware, microsoft
Okay I have to type this quick because i only have about 5 minutes until my internet goes out again.
So here's the deal:
I'm using Comcast and windows xp on a newer Dell computer (4600 series I believe)
Connection is fine. I can view webpages for about 10-12 minutes before every single website decides "this page cannot be displayed". I can log on to AIM just fine, and download music from limewire. But it will not display webpages ten minutes after I start my computer. I have read other inquiries about this problem on other pages and no one had responded so I really don't know what to do at this point. Here is what I have tried so far:
*Scanned for viruses and spyware with Spybot Search & destroy, AVG, and Ad-Aware 6
*Followed microsoft troubleshooting
*"repaired" the connection
*Downloaded Mozilla's foxfire, thinking it may just be interent explorer. Problem did not change.
*Downloaded TweakDUN from Majorgeeks.com
WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?! I'm so frustrated right now!!!

follow-up, kind of...
Date: 03/06/05
Keywords: virus
ok so i posted in here yesterday about not being able to install a game.
i went and exchanged it for another copy, but that one won't work either. it does the same thing. so i decided that my computer must just hate that game or something and threw it aside.
later on last night, i was trying to burn a data cd of a project for class. no matter what program i used (i have a couple) it would error out at the end.
it's fine with burning audio cds though, and i can listen to cds fine.
THEN i remembered that i can't watch dvds on here anymore, because they always freeze at 1:30:00, no matter what.
is my drive dying or something?
i mean it seems like my cd-rom just doesn't want to work...is it possible it's a virus?

d drive issues
Date: 03/05/05
Keywords: no keywords
hi everyone,
maybe someone computer-smart in here can help me with this problem i've been having.
i'm trying to install a game onto my computer, and for some reason, my d-drive doesn't want to read the cd.
it's a store-bought copy of the game, i don't do the downloading thing. so i know it's not corrupt. the cd-drive reads music cds, and even the second disc of the game, but when i put in the first cd, it freezes up. i can't access the "start.exe" installation file, and no menu pops up. i hear the drive churning for a minute, then it just stops spinning and sits there.
i have the minimum requirements.
it even freezes it up in safe mode.
anyone able to help???? i can give 5 paypal bucks haha i'm desperate!

how to burn dvd's?
Date: 03/05/05
Keywords: no keywords
I've ripped home dvd vids on to my computer with DVD shrink, and i've burnt one but it doesn't play on my regular dvd.
what is the proper way of burning a dvd so that it is compatible with all other dvd players?
(i used nero to burn the dvd btw, and i had both audio_ts (empty) and the video_ts (with the video files etc..) and it still doesn't work.)
... fifth coaster in the making.

virus? adware? something else really annoying?
Date: 03/04/05
Keywords: virus, spyware, yahoo, google
hey everyone... here's my problem, i hope someone can help.
i was on a couple sites looking for info on programs to download to convert a video file so i could burn it to a dvd and watch it on my tv (cause whatever file i have it as doesn't work). anyway, while i was on this site, a couple of those activex things popped up and i (stupidly) accepted them. then i got all this crap on my computer. most of it called "azesearch". so, i disabled the add ons that it installed on my tool bar. then i scanned my computer with ad-adware, which got rid of 44 files. i did a search for any file with "azesearch" in it. deleted around 8 of those. and now.. well, everything seems to be working okay, EXCEPT yahoo search or google search (there could be more not working but thats the only two ive noticed so far). the google search wont even work past the homepage (i get 'page cannot be displayed), also the same when i try to activate my gmail invite. the yahoo search page looks different. i mean, if you glance at it, it looks the same, but most of the links dont work. it has a "popular searches" column on the right which is all porn related. and if i search for something, it gives me a bunch of random non-related results, mostly about spyware, virus protection, or other "free sony vaio!" type of scams.
so, does anyone know what the problem could be or how to fix it? any help would be greatly appreciated.
btw, if this should be posted in a different community, please let me know. thanks again.
slt
EDIT: i use windows xp and IE if that helps.

Flash 4?

I was thinking of heading over to the local computer show this weekend and picking myself up a $40 copy of Flash 4. Flash MX sucks because it always freezes my computer (I probably need more RAM, but nuts to that.) I want to know if anyone has used Flash 4 before and what their experiences were like. Thanks.
