1. newb on the loose...laptop edition

    Date: 03/22/05     Keywords: ebay

So call me crazy but I recently purchased a laptop from an eBay seller. If you click on the link it will give you just about all the info you need on the system. All told I love it. It's my first laptop and I'm pleased with it. EXCEPT.... The display is acting funky. I tried to get a screen cap of what it was doing but it came out looking perfectly normal. So then I dug out my digicam and took a photo of what it's doing. It isn't the best but it gives you an idea. Basically I'm getting this low-bit pixelly static effect across my display, always in red tint, and it doesn't change or get better or worse when I change resolution. It isn't there when I first start up the computer but it doesn't take long to take effect once it's going. I've attempted to connect my desktop LCD (an NEC MultiSync 1850e) to the laptop, and the red-tint issue went away.

Now comes my question: What do you think? Is it something that can be repaired? Is it something I can repair myself? Or, should I take it in for repairs and kick myself senseless for "buying with confidence"? And before you suggest it, I don't think I can send it back. The deal was, buy it as-is. However, I was never told that there were any hardware issues, especially not with the display.

    Help!!!!

  2. Ok, new power supply in...full run-down

    Date: 03/22/05     Keywords: no keywords

In reference to my computer shutting off all the time..every few seconds or minutes...power just cuts out....

Ok new power supply is in. Yes this is #3. I bought a barebones system when my old junky "refurbished" computer had had enough. Well that 350W power supply totally died. Had it tested too. It was bad. Replaced with hercules switching power supply, 400W single fan. Thought maybe that one went bad so I ordered a new one that just came today and it's in right now. The new one's an Arrow 500W switching power supply, dual fan. It came in a box. (previous did not) Box says "over current protection, over power protection, short circut protection, 100% full load burn-in". Hav eno clue what that means. Does that mean this power supply is better?

I hope this is enough system info...sigh.......

    WinME 4.9.3000
"System name: IBM22761735687" - WRONG - sold the IBM NetVista, kept the hard drive, replaced with a generic barebones system without o/s because it's all I could afford.
    Manufacturer: ECS
    Model M863
    type X86-based PC
    AMD Athlon 1GHz
    128MB RAM
C: Maxtor (sp?) 10GB 5600 (is it?) rpm HDD - this is the old drive out of the IBM from PeoplePC which used to sell USED computers when they did sell computers. I need it because it has my o/s and they did not give me a Windows CD.
    D: Maxtor 40GB 7200 rpm HDD
    Generic FDD
    Ricoh CD-R/RW MP7063A
    IBM E54 monitor
    SiS integrated video/audio
    C-Media WDM Audio Device
    Ezonics EZ Cam II
    Standard 101/102 keyboard
    HSP56 modem
IBM Scrollpoint II mouse (driver only) actual Micro technologies generic mouse
    Lexmark InkJet USB printer

Oh...and I also run 2 additional case fans (the ones with LED lights) and a dual fan HDD cooler on each drive.

    Is that enough system info?

  3. Icon Highlights

    Date: 03/21/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have a client who called and said that all the icons on his desktop have the color shading behind the filename (as if he had selected all the icons on the desktop. He stated that it just started today, and he didn't do anything (uh-huh). Anyway, I've looked all over in both the Desktop and Taskbar properties, and I can't find anything that looks like its the culprit. He's running XP Pro, with SP2.

    Anyone?

    TIA

  5. I'm going insane...

    Date: 03/20/05     Keywords: virus

Background: The desktop computer is the family computer. It is hooked directly to a Qwest DSL modem, not 24/7, but most of the time. Running Windows XP. We have an almost-70GB hard drive, with 45BG still completely free.

Now, here's the problem. Well, first there are the spontaneous reboots, which are annoying, especially when I'm in the middle of a campaign. ...But when the computer gets turned off, then turned on again, about four in five times it doesn't boot up. The WindowsXP window comes up, and then it just goes to blank screen. It's stayed that way for up to half and hour before we've manually shut off the computer. Then the white text comes up with the different options of how to boot up the computer. All of them have worked at one time, and then not worked the next. I go through this three or four (or ten, last night) times, and then one time it will boot up without any blips.

This is driving me batty; does this sound like any viruses anyone knows of? Any suggestions or comments about what I can do?

  9. advanced parsing

    Date: 03/17/05     Keywords: rss

If you are bored, perhaps you can help me with this problem, its for someone on a forum I go on...

The file is formatted like this

    1 crux
The problem that is the hardest to solve
    The crux shadows
    2 addendum
    An addition
Addendum for those who submit combos
    3 groggy
    Half asleep and crabby
    I’m groggy still
    4 crabby
    Grumpy
    Being half asleep and crabby

(the number doesnt matter really, because that can be added in later)

And I need to get it like this

crux, The problem that is the hardest to solve, The crux shadows
    addendum, an addition, Addendum...
    groggy, ....

so basically it can be read into excel as a csv file.
So far I have it like this:

    crux,
The problem that is the hardest to solve,
    The crux shadows,

    addendum,
    An addition,
Addendum for those who submit combos,

    groggy,
    Half asleep and crabby,
    I’m groggy still,

(those are commas at the ends of the lines, although they look like periods/full stops)
    ....

so basically i need to join up all lines with a comma at the end... any ideas??

My script reads like this so far:

    cat words.txt |
sed 's/$/\,/g' | #adds commas to end of each line
    tr -d '1''2''3''4''5''6''7''8''9''0' | #removes all numbers
    sed 'n;n;G;' > words.csv #adds a new line every forth line

    #sed -e :a -e '/\\$/N; s/\\\n//; ta' #should join up all lines with BACKSLASHES at the end

How can I modify the last line to make it join up lines ending in the commas?

  10. New AIM virus or whatever

Date: 03/16/05     Keywords: html, security, yahoo, google

T_T I was reading away messages and my brother's was about new pictures or whatever, so him being far away I was interested in seeing them. I believe the link was http:// www.TravisArket. com/photos. pif or at least something similar to it. Whatever you do, don't click on it! I ended up downloading shit onto my computer and now it's infected (at least, more than before). I deleted the files I downloaded earlier, scanned my computer with PestPatrol, Ad-aware, and AVG.. The first two detected some junk and I deleted it, while AVG didn't detect anything. I searched through recently modified files and deleted what I believe was the AIM away message crap. However, even after deleting it I still have the problem (I think). Does anyone know what I'm talking about? This is aggravating. How do I get rid of this?

Ooh ok, so now it's just randomly but frequently putting up away messages now. It says, "NEW PICS FROM THE BEACH http:// www.TravisArket .com/photos. pif !!!!!" =(

Also, I've discovered that I now cannot view my processes, memory, and the other stuff alt ctrl del does. Every time I try to open it, it closes after about one or two seconds. I tried searching for more information about this on Yahoo and Google, but apparently my textboxes aren't working. I keep receiving the error message "Your current security settings do not allow you to send HTML forms." I know that I had not recently changed any settings whatsoever.. I do believe that my cookies have now been disabled, or at least on Yahoo, cuz I've just been logged out and cannot log back in due to "disabled cookies." =(

Edit: New fake URL at the domain of softhue.com, same ending though.

    Date: 03/16/05     Keywords: no keywords

Hi, I just got our wireless broadband router set up to the point of where each of the computers can connect to the internet. However, I can't get them to share files and the printer. I ran the Windows XP Network setup, and they still won't talk to each other.

Both computers are running Windows XP Home Edition.
The router is a LinkSys Wireless-B broadband router.
Our internet connection is through Bellsouth.
Both computers are on the same workgroup.

If you have any other relevant questions, just post them in the comments and I'll reply to the best of my knowledge.

    Very pissed off.

My Epson 1250 scanner is being a bitch. First it wouldn't even CONSIDER scanning anything and I had to fiddle around with the USB ports. Then, when I finally think it's working, it freezes on "Initialising scanner..." and when I do Ctrl Alt Delete, it's not responding.

Yes, it is plugged in properly at the wall and the USB port.

Can anyone help me with my so-called scanner? It's the first time it's been like this - had it a couple of years now. This is the LAST thing I need to happen as I have a huge media project due in a week tomorrow and need to get these images onto my computer.

    Thanks.

  14. DELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Date: 03/15/05     Keywords: software, virus, spyware

my girlfriend's cousin has a dell dimension 4600c that has been eaten alive by spyware and trojans and everything. she had a dsl connection without any kind of firewall and stuff and no spyware blockers, and norton virus scan (so may as well be no virus scan). i am trying to figure out how to do an image restore, but she can't find the CD that would have that on it. pretty much every computer i have ever had has come with a cd that will let you restore to the factory settings and erase everything else, but dell is weird and likes to do things their own way so i don't know if that will work or not.

if anyone knows anything about dell or has any advice for me.  kinda don't wanna wipe the whole drive because i don't wanna spend like 7 hours trying to get the computer back running and then put all the software she needs on there. bleah!!!!!!!!!! help!

  15. wireless internet

    Date: 03/15/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm a total n00b when it comes to networking and have never had to mess with it before.

My girlfriend just moved into a new apartment where they have wireless broadband. I sent her a brand new Gigabyte 80211.b wireless card and guided her over the phone as she installed it. (We're 6 hours apart.) She booted up, followed the installation instructions for the card and let Windows (XP SP2 with all updates) install the card. Another reboot - but even though the card appears to be installed ok, (no issues in Device Manager,) her status remains "wireless network unavailable." There are two other computers in the apartment and both are working fine. We verified that the router was up and running.

I had her disable the old network connections and leave just the new one, but it didn't help. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I was thinking that she might need the ISP's installation disc to complete her connection but I have no idea. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, I'm Jo and new to the community.

    [not like you care. :p]

I have a question [obviously, or I wouldn't be here].

Is there a way to find out who belongs to a certain IP? [Like: John Doe's IP is 11.11.111.111]

A free way is definetly preferable, and if I don't have to download anything, that'd be great too. :D

    Thanks much!

  18. Just a couple of random questions.

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: browser, web

People have always been praising the glory that is Firefox, and I have seen from screencaps that people have edited that blank bar (well mine is blank now anyway) under the address bar to have things in there, like programs bookmarks and even Mozilla options like deepest sender.   Since I am new to the world of Mozilla, could anyone tell me how?

Also, sometimes whenever my browser (usually I.e5) cannot find a page it doesn’t come up with the usual standard I.e. “page cannot be found” page, but a website called “insta-finder” is there anyway I can block this site? It’s really annoying.

  19. Please Help

Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: software, virus, web, google

Okay, I have gone to several computer help websites, googled til I've gone nuts, and asked all my computer smart friends, but nobody seems to be able to fix this problem. So I'm really hoping that someone here can help me.

I recently got a new tower built by a man who seemed experienced enough. It comes with Windows XP Home Edition SP2, and so far I have had no trouble at all. Until recently when I discovered I'm unable to upload. I can't upload, transfer files over e-mails, or even send files through AIM. A friend of mine suggested I create a 1x1 pixeled size icon to just see if I couldn't upload period or something else. Well apparently it lets me upload that icon, so we figure something is limiting how much data I'm allowed to upload or send. We guess that limit is around 4096 kbs since thats about how much that icon was. I've turned off Windows XP firewall thinking that might be the issue but it wasn't. I've checked network connections, and made sure that I didn't have any anti-virus software that might be trying to prevent me from doing this. And so far there seems to be no reasonable explanation for why I'm having all this trouble. If you need to know more about my computer feel free to ask, since I'm willing to do anything to get this thing fixed since I'm going crazy trying to figure out whats wrong. I really appreciate any help given, since I know some of you are probably busy. Thanks.

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: web

I've considered selling my (nothing fancy) digital camera and USB video capture card because nothing works on my computer anymore. I used to use all kinds of "external" things - webcam, jam cam, dazzle dvc, sony netMD, etc. Now all my stupid computer does is try to tell me that these devices aren't connected but they ARE!!!!! If you go into properties everything says it's working. It also won't play audio cd's because it thinks the CD drive isn't connected either!! OH REALLY!?!?! Because I can run programs and burn CD's without any problem!!! But nooooooooooooooo, nothing's connected..... The jam cam is never connected.... the video capture is never connected.... Piece of crap!!! :( What am I supposed to do???
