1. Gateway Notebook. wont boot up.

    Date: 12/25/06     Keywords: no keywords

Ive had a Gateway 7322GZ for 2 years now. and for some reason today it decided it doesnt feel like booting up any more. is this common? any ideas on how to resolve? I have a 3 yr warrenty plan through best buy so if anything I will probably have to take it up there to have it sent out, but i thought id see if there may be something i can do.

basically i was using it just fine, and I set it down to eat dinner. and when i came back and opened it up it seemed as though it was stuck in "sleep mode" and wouldnt wake up. so I proceeded to shut it down and restart. but when i restarted it still stayed in black screen.

Im chatting with gateway support now, but they are SLOOOOOW.

  3. Revy

    Date: 12/24/06     Keywords: no keywords

Barring a few upgrades, I'm done building the machine.

Name on the network: Revy (named after a character in an anime/manga series)

    System Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (I'm getting an E6700 from my company- hopefully next week)
A-DATA 1GB DDR2 800 PC2-6400 Dual Channel (2 more GB is on RMA from NewEgg)
    Acer AL2016w 20" 1680 x 1050 widescreen LCD
    Sapphire Radeon X1900GT 256MB PCIe
    Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA II
    Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Thermalake smart case fan with temperature probe (I'll probe the gpu and not cpu...)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX 7.1(didn't replace because this one has remote control)
    Logitech X-530 (Front/center/rear/sub)
Aiwa NSX-3500 (Side channels. Pretty clever eh?)

Lights out? No prob. I can see all the keys fine. A reviewer said he didn't like the feel of the Flexiglow keys on the backlit keyboard, but I find it just fine. You just have to actually try typing with it first.

Yes, the UV-reactive motherboard headers actually glow with regular LEDs. Of course, if you want a bright glow you'd need some real UV caselights.

With 6 fans going inside and out, Revy sounds like an air conditioner.

In this picture with the computer turned off you can see that the SDRAM has red heat plates.

Bad pic of the Radeon X1900GT. Almost the whole length of the card is under a big red heatsink-fan unit. The sucker gets HOT during 3DMark. I don't remember the exact numbers- 3DMark05 was over 9000, with 3DMark06 inching towards 4500. I have not overclocked, will wait until I get the E6700 and the other 2 gigs of RAM before I do that. I don't think I'll need to overclock, but I'll just do it or the heck of it. Unreal Tournament 2004 already plays 1680x1050 at highest settings at triple-digit framerates. The real challenge will be playing Oblivion on high definition, and that's what the E6700/3GB upgrade is going to be for.

    The front "turbine".

slapped in an intake grill, just in case I need to open up the front for some extra air during overclocking. Notice the ugly beige drives- those are older ones that I'll replace one of these days... they're behind a cover anyways, so who cares??

  4. Looking for audio

    Date: 12/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

Thanks to everyone who commented on the TV. As it turns out, I turned it on this morning and it looks perfectly fine! Go figure!

    Now, for today's need :-)

I'm looking for a large source of NASA audio. Specifically, mission audio. Countdowns, flight, control, the whole nine yards.

    Moon missions, unmanned, shuttle, everything.

NASA's sites have bits and pieces, and I've managed to cobble together a bunch, but I'm looking for the real site that has gigs and gigs of stuff.

It's all public domain, so someone, somewhere must have it online...

By way of explanation, I'm working on some music that needs drop-in clips of this kind of stuff, and the clips I have already are terribly cliche and overused (every techno song in the Universe has used the Apollo 11 liftoff and landing... I'd love some mission audio from, oh, say, Viking or perhaps one of the shuttle missions).

  5. Dead TV?

    Date: 12/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

I suspect someone here will know the answer...

I put a speaker on top of my 19" TV - the cheap one in my office. The speaker was there for only about a minute, but when I took it off, I noticed that the top, oh, 15% of the screen is now a sickly green.

If this were a computer monitor, I'd hit the 'degauss' button. Of course, this TV has no such thing.

Will it revert on its own? Or did I hose my TV?

  6. Wither MIDI and Recording?

    Date: 12/21/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Okay, here's my situation:

I have a PC with Cubase. What this PC does not have is MIDI in any easily-usable format. While I have an Event EZBus mixer which provides some MIDI, I have a large number of external synths that I'd love to be able to interface to the PC and use Cubase to control everything.

Is there such a thing as an internal card for a PC that will provide 8 or even 16 MIDI ports that Cubase can talk to? Preferably something with a good interface that would let me assign crossovers and filtering?

    Any recommendations?

  7. Object not valid error

    Date: 12/20/06     Keywords: browser, java

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to build a page with two forms. The first form is located in an invisible layer, and it comes to view only when the user clicks the submit button of the second form. The button in the first form, which is not a submit button, uses a javascript like document.getElementById("commentform").submit(); to submit the second form.

However this is where something happens and I don't know what. The browser throws an error like "Object doesn't support this property or method." And it gives as culprit the script I typed above. The only method or function that I can see here is submit(), but that is not an exotic function, and the browsers I tried it in are all latest model. How is it possible that the object doesn't support this method???

  8. iTunes launch failure

    Date: 12/18/06     Keywords: no keywords

Hi, I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'd really appreciate it.

A few days ago I was moving my icons on my desktop and I accidently set my iTunes icon on top of my Firefox icon. A pop up came up, but I don't remember what it said (although I wish I could). Afterwards, I couldn't open iTunes. It'll appear in my taskbar for a splitsecond and then disappear. I can't even open my iTunes folder in My Music folder.

I tried following this: iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch failures. I created a new account and tried opening iTunes there and it worked. So I tried Remove iTunes Plug-in, Remove iTunes Preference files, and Check for content files with issues, but like I said I can't open my iTunes folder at all. When I moved my iTunes folder onto my desktop and opened iTunes, it still wouldn't open but a new iTunes folder appeared in My Music folder.

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, but it still won't open.

I've also posted this at the Apple.com support discussion board and I haven't gotten an answer there. I'd really appreciate some help. This is quite distressing. I really don't want to have to delete my music and import all of them again :[

    Hey guys.

I was wondering if any of you guys know a reliable, non-ebay online reseller of Socket A processors (not wholesale please, but if need be, I can manage). I have a couple of scavenged computers sitting in my workshop, and some of them are missing their beloved Athlon XPs.

    Thanks for any advice/direction given.

  11. Help !

    Date: 12/15/06     Keywords: no keywords

Having encountered a Trojan Horse the other day and rather stupidly "healing" it before finding out any information about it first I have come across a problem. I believe the kernel.dll file has been wiped as my PC continuously reboots before even arriving at the Windows XP logon screen.

    So, here's my dilemma.

I have some files I haven't managed to back up on my hard drive that I want to keep. The only problem is I can't restore the kernel.dll file as I only have Advent Recovery Disks and no recovery console. Is there a way of accessing these files without formatting my other hard drive and installing XP on that?

    Thanks in advance :)

  12. Looking for Online Collaboration Tools

Date: 12/14/06     Keywords: database, web, google

I run a photo studio. All artists in residence in the studio are working on the same project this year. We have almost a hundred models in our book, and need to find a way to share a calendar so that we can all put down when we're available, not available, have shoots scheduled, and the like. We also need to have an online database for all of our models where we can all see the models' information, write notes, share images, and the like.

In short, we need an online collaboration system.

We've looked at Google Web Apps, and that has nice shared email and a decent calendar, but nothing even close to a shared online database for our models.

Anyone have any suggestions? Free or pay, either is fine. I'm perfectly cool paying for something that works.

  13. Spam

    Date: 12/13/06     Keywords: spam

I was curious about removing my email address from spam lists.

Unsubscribe links within spam email don't usually work, and may actually increase spam.

I was curious if there was a string of code I could place in a reply to a spam email that the servers who SENT the spam might interpret as a dead email adress, and remove my address from the list.

Of course, this is all theory, as I have no practical knowledge of how this works.

    Thanks!

  16. ATX 12V / ATX 2.0 power supply for PCIe x16 graphics cards

    Date: 12/08/06     Keywords: html

An article noting how one power supply it's reviewing is not ATX 2.0 compliant
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/inwin-psu2_4.html

"The ATX12V 2.0 specification has introduced the 24-pin mainboard connector mainly because of the arrival of the PCI Express x16 slot that can provide up to 75W of power to the graphics card across the +12V rail. The older 20-pin connector had only one +12V pin for which such a high load could be dangerous. The pin could burn away, provoking failures in operation of the computer or even damaging the mainboard (the pins could get as hot as to melt the plastic of the connector). The new 24-pin connector has two +12V pins that provide a combined current up to 8-10A without any risk of burning (one pin provides a current up to 6A whereas each additional pin adds up about 50% to that value, i.e. about 3A in this case)."

You might be able to get away with a low end PCIe card, but if you have a high end card that sucks quite a bit of power check to see if the power supply you're using has a 24pin connection for fire safety... This is for system builders. If you have a ready-made machine I don't think you'd have this problem. At least I hope not.

    original link found from http://www.jonnyguru.com/

Also, a free 500w supply after rebate for those who need an ATX 12V supply on the cheap (I got a 400w supply for free last time the same way- got my rebate on that one just recently):

  17. What is a good virtual disk compress software for Windows XP?

    Date: 12/07/06     Keywords: software

It must meet the following requirements:
    1. Good compression. This means something that's not archaic like what NTFS uses (LZ77).
    2. Good speed. Some decrease in speed compared to normal drive is acceptable, but not a lot.
    3. Compression of an entire FS (A) or a directory (B). If (B), then #4 doesn't apply.
    4. Virtual drive: a file containing the compressed FS which can be mounted as a normal drive (like FreeBSD vnode); OR
virtual drive software that can mount a file containing an arbitrary FS for reading and writing (i.e. not a CD/DVD).

In other words, I basically just want automatic compression of either a directory or file system, done transparently to the programs accessing the files and at a reasonable speed.

  18. Windows 2003 License.

    Date: 12/07/06     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking to solve an argument among techs in my department because ironically we can't solve it online.

We have a 180-day license running our task server, we have a permanent license going to be ordered in a few weeks once the purchase order for our other equipment goes through. NOW when we get the full license will we have to wipe the server and put a fresh install OR can we install the new license some way?

BTW please point me in the steps of some proof of verifying eithier of these as the right way because I have too many people that are just TOO stubborn to believe word of mouth.

    Thanks.

  19. Another question

    Date: 12/07/06     Keywords: no keywords

Sorry to post again, but I just have another question. I'm just burning my photos onto a dvd at the moment, but when I click to 'copy files to cd' it keeps coming up with an error for each filel. I've tried backing them up through Nero but that didn't work either. I usually have no problems doing this, especially through 'my computer' and was wondering if anyone has any idea of why it won't let me copy the files?

  20. Slideshows

    Date: 12/07/06     Keywords: software

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. But I want to make a slideshow with some photos with music etc but I'm not sure what kind of software I could use for this. I have Windows movie maker but it's just so difficult getting the slideshow onto a DVD.

I wanted to make a thing at the start and in between the photos, with a collage or something for each country that I visited. Does anyone know if any software would allow me to do that? I tried making a collage in powerpoint and transferring it over, but that didn't work :( I'd appreciate any help any of you have to offer :)

Also something that's free and that I can download now would be great, or you may know of a program I already have..or help using windows media player (transferring to dvd) :)
